- Hi everyone! Thanks for watching my video testing out the new Makerist AR smart phone app. I really enjoyed testing the app and using it to make my pattern, I hope this has been an interesting watch and I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments on this new sewing technology.

Yes, you ladies are changing the world. We had both programs for this many years ago as well as services doing the work then sending the pattern. Seems to me it worked somehow w pictures too. We didn't have the world connected by internet back then, companies advertised in sew mags and women's mags. We also had a magical number system for altering patterns or pattern making but that dealt w paper.

Whoa! Love it! What an oddly prosaic first real use for that technology. I imagine it would be a lot easier with a small tripod or similar. Your top turned out so pretty too!

Very well done from a technical standpoint getting the picture in picture for your video and clearly showing the work as you progress. Speeded up camera and not over much of intro. I will certainly use the app as my flimsy paper transferring skills are not the best. Find I'm always out by a few cms. Thanks for doing this.

Wow I like this concept. I have never seen or heard about this. Great demonstration. I read the comments and there are some great ideas. I think I’m going to try this. I don’t have space in my small sewing room for an overhead projector, I cut my patterns and fabric in the kitchen on the island. So I cannot put the projector there. What a great concept. I'm really excited about this development. Hopefully other brands can consider this option too. Like others have said, I probably would want to trace the pattern onto paper so I could make adjustments, but this is still better than my current situation where I have to pay to print pdfs onto A0. Maybe future developments of this tech would be that you could make simple adjustments (length and grading) within the app so if they were the only adjustments you needed, you could trace directly onto the fabric after you've made those adjustments in app.
Yes I think drawing onto paper is definitely an option which would still potentially save time and money and you would be able to make and keep the adjustments for the future as you say. I'm glad you like the concept though I think it's definitely a work in progress x

Why not mark on paper. That way you have it for next time. No printning or taping etc
You could certainly do that. I did that when I was first playing around with the app. It would still save some time and probably a lot of wasted paper and it would be easier to make adjustments that way too. Thanks for your feedback xx

Wow what a clever concept and looks like once you get the knack maybe in years to come the young will marvel at ever using paper patterns. Will wait for android version.

Wow this is fab! I’d heard of the concept of using AR or a projector & I was really sceptical but this actually seems easier/more accurate than I thought it would be 😃 & your top looks lovely 👌👏 beautiful fabric too!

The app has tons of potential. I would probably get a tripod or something to hold my phone and then trace out the pattern pieces directly onto paper. Can’t wait for Android version!

It looks interesting but really faffy. I think by the time I’d messed around the app and plotted all the pattern pieces I’d just rather pin the paper on and chop on in.
I think it’s definitely personal preference using the app takes a little practice but gets easier as you get the hang of it. I don’t think it’ll totally replace paper but will be a great alternative to save time and some paper. Thank you so much for watching it’s great to hear your feedback xx

This is really interesting and I love that you don't have to buy extra equipment like a projector. It seems like the patterns have to be purchased from them. Do they have a wide range of available patterns, including from Indy pattern companies like Chalk & Notch, Tilly and The Buttons, Closet Core, etc.? Thanks for showing us an exciting alternative!
No I don’t think they’re quite that advanced yet. On the makerist website there’s a section for AI patterns so you can see what they have. It’s an interesting one and I think it’ll develop further in the future 😊 x

This looks like a game changer! Just hope the companies I follow will start using AR patterns. I’m not fond of the patterns currently available on Makerly. Great demonstration of this technology. I think once we can use a headset to view files it will be even better!

I don't see why you can't just input your measurements (Ie Lekala) and you get a pattern made to fit👌🏼😁then use this tech to mark out etc😁

I think this is an amazing idea. It’s still new and I’m sure it’ll improve with time but I certainly think that this will be the future. For a start it will save you paper which surely it’s better for the environment (as you mentioned). Yes, if we need adjustments we’ll still need to go to paper but I’m confident that eventually we’ll be able to enter our measurements and just be able to make a made to measure garment without the need for adjustments.
Yes I would think that this is definitely the beginning of something and I'm sure it will change and evolve to improve over time. Great for the environment and great for saving time, space and money :). Thanks for watching x
Thanks Sally for the review. Love your top, sometimes the simple sews are the most wearable & useful. The App seems magic! Totally agree with the eco credentials of saving paper and think it would just take a bit of getting used to. I’d give it a go for sure , bring on the Android version. 😀

Very interesting. One thing you could do to make future use of the pattern easier without tracing it off again is to pin the fabric to light weight paper used for tracing patterns prior to tracing it out. That will also stabilize slippery fabrics and afterwards you will have tissue pattern pieces to reuse.

@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I can’t take credit for it though. I learned to do that from a Craftsy class on working with difficult, slippery fabrics. It has made all the difference for me, I no longer see them as impossible.
I’ve a feeling you might still need another hand to stop everything from shifting around while you trace the pattern. I’ve yet to find a reliable/erasable marker that glides easily enough over jersey knits and slippery fabrics without holding them in place with two hands. Very happy to be proved wrong though 😊

Very interesting. Like you say this is still a work in progress for Makerist and I am sure that there will be many improvements. I make so many adjustments to patterns to make them fit me I would be intrigued to see how you do these on the app. Thanks for doing this video.

Interesting concept, I'd like to try it out. I think you'd have to try first on an easy pattern. I think I'd transfer to tracing paper though as that way any amendments on sizing can be done before cutting the fabric.

Give me a paper pattern any day, cut it out and pin it on with the ability to grade between sizes. Or of course you can trace from it. All these using two hands! I know we have to move with technology but this is not my thing and I would not feel confident - especially using one hand. And I like to have the pattern but then I prefer books to a Kindle!!
I don't think it'll be for everyone. I'll never give up my 'proper' paper patterns because I like to collect them and see them all in the envelopes. I also prefer books to a kindle :) x

I think those that would like the projector files would like this as well. I would need a phone holder The advantage of the projector seems to be it puts the visual on the fabric so there is no tracing.

Great instructional video Sally. I’m keen to give it a go and have downloaded the app. Sadly none of the 3 patterns I’d already downloaded from Makerist are available in AR, but maybe they will be at some point. Probably best that my first attempt is one of the simpler free patterns that are provided! Thank you 😊 x

Yes I think it's important to remember what I've demonstrated is still in the early stages. The only way I can see to blend sizes at the moment is to draw out two sizes on paper and then blend. Defeats the object a little but may still save time and paper x

Really like the fabric, but not sure I could hold the phone and draw accurately at the same. I am not sure how useful this except for very basic patterns. If you wanted to make the pattern more than once, or make any fit or style alterations it would be easier to have a paper pattern. I would like to have svg versions of patterns without seam allowances so I could choose to offset my own seam and hem allowances. I have manually adapted pdf patterns to cut them out using a die cutting machine, with a custom arrow pattern that I can get the machine to draw on the pattern, as well as the seam lines. Having more than one grain line drawn on the pattern can be really helpful. However a lot of pdf patterns come with sizes and symbols as parts of the seam lines, so I have to retrace them manually, instead of being able to cut them out directly. Maybe the app developers could look into developing these sorts of patterns. Most die cutting machines can cut paper at least A3 in size, so you can cut many fabric pieces directly on the machine, or only have a couple of pieces of paper to stick together for larger shapes. If you are going to project the pattern, why not do full size pieces rather than cut on a fold. Cutting single layer fabric is always more accurate.
It's certainly a bit of a fiddle but on simple patterns it can work I'm not sure of the accuracy for more in depth patterns though as you say. Thanks so much for watching and for your comments, it will be interesting to see how this concept evolves for the future x
Your top is really cute. The app certainly has potential. I don’t see how you would make any adjustments for size, though, such as blending between two sizes, or even lengthening or shortening the pattern. Seems like you would have to put it on paper first to do any adjustments or hacks, and I’m not sure how you could see more than one size at a time. Am I missing something?

What I would like to add to that is putting in my own body measurements prior to buying a pattern so it would adjust or tell me that it is not suited for my body type. I can see this happening down the line. I wonder if using an iPad would have an easier viewpoint for those of us whose eyes are no longer so perfect? I would probably have a camera holder set up so that I can use both hands. I really like the potential with this and thank you for your great introduction to this!

Hi Sally, I appreciate the technology and the potential it may offer, but I feel it’s some way off being a viable alternative to PDFs or paper patterns at present. You presented it very well, with positivity and enthusiasm and I was feeling hopeful until I saw you trying to mark out the pattern with the fabric with one hand, whilst holding the phone with the other hand. Perhaps it would work for stable fabrics, but imagine trying to do that with a slippery fabric or even a stretchy jersey/knit. You’d definitely need both hands to hold/mark the fabric. Would be interested to know how the technology works for those that need to blend sizes. If you have to draw out each size separately for each pattern piece on the fabric, I can imagine that getting very confusing and possibly inaccurate. It’s also worth noting that you might still need a printer at home to print out the initial anchor piece. Well done though Sally, it can’t have been easy.
Hi Dee, thanks for the feedback. You do need a printer to print out the anchor but the anchor can then be used over multiple patterns. For blending sizes at the moment you would need to draw out both sizes onto paper first and then adjust but it's important to note that what I've demonstrated is something in the early stages, I think things will become more advanced over time. My fabric was a rayon and I used a chalk pen :). Thanks for watching x
This is brilliant, I love it! I follow projector groups on facebook, but this looks much better, and far more portable. The anchor thing is so clever. I'd definitely want to use a tripod or a 'lazy arm' - my eldest teen has just bought one so that she doesn't have to hold her phone in bed!

I don't think you can at the moment. Certainly not for use with this particular app anyway but I think it's something that will become more widely used in the future x
Looks interesting. Think you’d definitely need a tripod but wonder how that would work? Would the tripod get in the way? What happens when you want to make this pattern again?
A tripod would help if you’re not confident holding the camera 😊 For future makes you need to do the same again or you could project onto paper if you wanted to keep it but it could be argued that defeats the object slightly x
Very thorough demo. I have android so I will keep my eye out for the app. I often have to grade between sizes 12/14 top and 16 hips, being a pear shape, I wonder how that could be incorporated?
Hopefully you won't have to wait too long! I think the only way so far is to draw out both sizes and then grade but hopefully things might advance further in the future x

It’s incredible technology, what would happen if you were in between sizes.
Hmmm, I guess you could draw out the smaller size and then the larger and then grade between as you normally would. You could always draw out onto paper first, would defeat the saving paper a little but would probably still be more time saving in the long run x
Interesting for sure. Well made video. As for the tech, not a good option for someone like me that has a tremor. I have heard of using a projector and imagine that would be easier but idk. I mainly draft my own patterns so this is not something I would use

This is amazing, and I’ll try it’s soon. I didn’t want to invest in a projector, might skip it all together, although the patterns would need to new and purchased through Makerist, and I’d be curious to know if they would allow importing say, and A0 file and project that via AR. Thanks! Sewing is going in the right direction anyway! And love the top.

I wonder how you would do things like full bust adjustments?
At the moment it would mean tracing out the two different sizes and making adjustments on paper as you would after printing a PDF possibly something that will be improved in the future xx
I love this concept. It'll be quicker to get to the bit we all enjoy the most. The sewing and wearing of our me mades 😊. Look forward to it being on Android, but think I'll need to buy a tripod to use it. Looks really good though. Your top is lovely and that fabric 👌
What size bias binding does it recommend that you use for the armholes? Would love to see how you add bias binding to armholes too.
Yes that’s very true, I think it won’t be too long before it’s available on Android:) I’ve just checked the pattern and it doesn’t actually say what size bias binding but I cut 5cm wide and that was fine doubled over (so 2.5 cm when ironed). I’d like to film some more short videos of sewing process so hopefully I can include this soon :) Thank you for watching xxx

No I don't think so, it'll just be the patterns in AO format :) x
You still need to have an adjustable pattern shape if you need to alter the pattern in any way. God idea for marking on paper though.

I think this is great! Seems a little tricky to hold device and draw out, although you did a fantastic job. Have you had a go with setting your phone up with a tripod?
It takes a bit of getting used to but because the actual pattern piece shouldn’t move once your anchor is in place your hand doesn’t have to be too steady. I’ll definitely try a tripod sometime to see if that’s easier! Thanks so much for watching 😊 x

It’s a good idea but it’s too much in the early stages to work for more complex projects with many pieces which you need to arrange carefully to fit on limited fabric (sometimes splitting the pieces if you don’t have enough fabric). I’m also iffy on the projects that don’t have ease where every millimeter counts and the thickness of that digital line could offset your intended tracing. Furthermore, I’m very wary of the optical warp that exists towards the image corners with every camera lens.
I wouldn’t consider it a waste of paper if you keep it to reuse it.
I'm not sure PDF printing would be considered a waste of paper I think this is more about saving paper in general. You're right though it is in the early stages and I'm sure things will develop more over time. Very interesting, sure it would work well for simple patterns. Not something I would use as I don't have a mobile phone! I would want a paper pattern for a number of reasons, quicker to remake a pattern (which I do alot of), would not be possible to grade between sizes, and be able to make adjustments to the pattern pieces for next time. If you need to do srandard adjustments such as a full bust adjustment, you would have to do this every time. Sure it will be popular though as sticking paper patterns together is tedious.
Yes I definitely think it’ll be personal preference and possibly just an alternative to pdf printing as a great way to save paper. It’s still a work in progress I believe and the only way I can see around making adjustments at the moment would be to draw out onto paper first and then make the changes. Would still save time and probably some paper compared to sticking together pdfs I guess. Thanks so much for watching and for your feedback xxx

Reminds me of the Lutterloh and similar system where you use your measurements, a mini pattern and special tape measure. Have you tried that.. do you like it?

As it stands for now, I'll stick to the PDF version...even though it frustrates my husband to download and print them out for me.
I think it'll be personal preference and I definitely think it'll be a while before it completely replaces PDF if at all because I know a lot of people (me included) like a proper paper pattern in some cases x

If you want to grade between sizes however you’d have to trace out two sizes and that would be a lot of work I think.

What a great concept! I have to wait until it's out for android though. 😥 I'll be interested to see how it handles adjustments. I need to shorten most times and I'm lucky I don't need to do a FBA. 😁
I think the adjustments are the biggest hurdle at the moment but you could draw out onto paper and adjust onto that initially until things develop :) x
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I think another problem would be whether there is enough fabric. I know I play tetris when I'm trying to squeeze a project out of minimum fabric. A lot of patterns have waste with layouts.
One thing you did that was confusing. You said to hold the phone 11 inches away then you started moving the phone at different heights when you brought up tge pattern later. Do you only hold it at 11 inches for the first bit? Thanks
You do need to keep it at roughly the same height to make sure that your pattern piece remains in the same place. You can use a tripod to make the process easier if you want to :) Apologies for my late reply x
Interesting, but how do you alter the pattern, like sloping shoulders, sway back, FBA?
At the moment it would mean tracing out the two different sizes and making adjustments on paper as you would after printing a PDF possibly something that will be improved in the future xx
This looks great - can't wait until it gets to android. Maybe they could figure a way to do some pattern adjustments like blended sizes or lengthen/shorten by the time it comes out.

Thank you I'm glad you liked the video :). The pattern info and instructions are all available on the Makerist website where you will need to download your pattern in the first instance. You can't buy patterns on the app you buy from the website and then use the app as a meant to draw out the pattern (if that makes sense) so all sizing, fabric requirements etc will be on the website. I used a chalk pencil to mark out but I'm going to get hold of a washable fabric marker as I think that would be easier to use. Thanks for watching xx

When I downloaded this pattern, it says it doesn't include a seam allowance, which means, I need to add the seam allowance? Also, if I want to make adjustment to the pattern, I will not be able to do it.
You do need to add seam allowance but for my version, where I should have cut a 6 I decided to cut an 8 to give me extra room for seams. Not technically perfect but I didn't mind in this case since it's not a fitted top and quite oversized anyway. If I was to add a seam allowance I would draw the pattern as is and then add on my seam allowance after without needing to hold the phone any longer. I hope that helps x
