Elegant presentation. Nice job Isabella and Per Sia. Who else can draw a line through the technology of painting, The Tudors, and drag?

This is a fun way to make Tudor history more relevant to a modern audience. But I have to be pedantic and correct an error in the curator’s introduction: Henry VIII wasn’t trying to *divorce* Catherine of Aragon, but rather *annul* his marriage.
In other words, get the Pope to declare that they had never actually _been_ married in the first place, and therefore he was free to marry Anne Boleyn. Divorce per se (ending an existing marriage) didn’t exist in the Western Church at that point.
The lurid sexual angle: Annulling Henry and Catherine’s marriage depended on establishing that her previous marriage with his older brother, Arthur, had been consummated - even though she swore up and down before marrying Henry that she and Arthur had never had sex. (By the rules of the Catholic Church at the time, a widow could not marry her late husband’s brother, but a marriage that had never been consummated didn’t count.)
Both she and Arthur were only 15 when they got married and he was in fragile health. So when he died 5 months later of the sweating sickness, people were ready to believe she was still a virgin. (Especially Henry’s father, the notoriously stingy Henry VII, who didn’t want the pretty red-haired princess and her even prettier dowry getting scooped up by some other country.)
Anyway, that was the story the Tudors trotted out when Henry did want to marry Catherine (when he was 19 and she was 24).
But fast-forward 15 years, when she was pushing 40: Henry did a complete 180 when it suited him to say that her marriage to Arthur HAD been valid after all [insert a lot of sleazy gynecological gossip], and therefore hers to him WASN’T by church law. Therefore their daughter Mary was illegitimate, and he could marry Anne Boleyn, who was telling him, “If you like it then you’d better put a ring on it.”

Meh, the commoditization of the "fabulous drag queen" has gotten so passé. To some it still feels provocative and avante garde, but it's just grating..
