David, the pace and flow of the video is excellent. Well done! I recently purchased a Chromebook as opposed to another lower-end Windows laptop (to use as a travel laptop) and I was blown away at the power and flexibility of Chrome OS. I don't think MS realizes it yet, but Chrome OS represents serious competition to Windows for casual computer users.
Hi Larry. Thanks for your kind comment. Yes, MS and maybe to a degree, Apple, should look more closely at what’s going with Chrome OS and Flex. I’ve already installed it on three different old Windows X86 machines and also a modern 11th Gen Intel machine and it works flawlessly and is way snappier than Windows on the old machines. What’s probably the bigger surprise is that I’ve just installed it on an old Mac Mini, I think 2011 or 2012 and it worked well. What’s more interesting about the Mac is that it’s been effectively dead for a while, with no compatibility with the later OS versions. So, in this instance, Flex is definitely breathing new life into many machines who’s own manufacturers would consider EOL. Google will have obviously done this for financial gain, once people start hooking into extra services and apps via Chrome etc. However, a massively positive side effect of all this is that it can help to reduce e-waste and also give those with little money and people in developing countries, the real opportunity to have some sort of cheap computer system that’s quite capable of day to day tasks and to be able to join in with a global community wherever possible. Cheers, Dave.
It doesn't, and it hasn't in the more than decade it has been on the market their touch screen interfacing is abysmal and even Windows offers a superior product in this regard
@@sumitchaudhary343 ms word hasn't been a killer app in a long time. For 99% of people Google office and office 365 will be enough. I'd say the Adobe suites are the big issue, but those bloated beasties aren't going to run well on older machines anyhow.
Great job ! I recently had to recover a Chromebook using that tool. It took me several attempts. You got it done smoothly. I'm going to try on some of my old laptops. Doing it on a surface tablet is a great use of this application.
I'd say Chrome OS Flex would be useful for the $200-$300 laptops like the Gateway, HP Stream, and ASUS L410 which should be running Chrome OS rather than Windows 10/11 since the hardware isn't suited for Windows in mind. The downside of Flex compared to ChromeOS or FydeOS is you don't get Android app support though you can compensate this with an Android phone (such as Samsung or OnePlus), a Chromebook, or Windows 11 if it arrives although it doesn't use Google Play.
yeah i agree, my tablet came with windows 10 but since it has an intel atom processor thats clocked at 1.4 ghz windows 10 ran painfully slow so chrome os fixed almost everything
That's right Tone, Flex works really well with old machines. But that's nothing, check this video out from this point onward on an even less powerful machine :) th-cam.com/video/Le-IRMEA5oM/w-d-xo.html Cheers, Dave.
Thanks Harry, I'm using my old laptop now. Asus 11 inch netbook. Works perfectly fine with chrome flex now I can use it for my work. Very nice. Thanks harry. More power to you.
Thank you so much for your video. I followed your instructions and I was able to install chrome OS flex on an aging Asus Windows 10 laptop. The laptop is running much better with the chrome OS flex operating system. The laptop is much faster and does not get as hot compared to when windows 10 was installed. The laptop is nearly 10 years old. Thank you for your tutorial.
I just installed Flex on my Surface Pro 3, and it works great. Bluetooth keyboard touchscreen all works fine. Super fast and battery life is much better.
Thank you very much for this tutorial. Installing Chrome OS Flex on this ancient 2009-2010 Acer Aspire 5534 Laptop breathe life into this machine and save me some funds in the process. The instructions were very clear. This laptop was all set to be recycle. I had already wiped cleaned the hard drive over a year ago and was just procrastinating removing it. I had to reinstall Windows 7, but it is all good now. The only other hiccup I came across worth mentioning was trying to figure out how to move the Scan Disk in the BIOS to the BOOT position , done. I also did an update on the new OS and it is loading fast. I have 207 gigabytes to work/play with, Good Stuff. I have subscribed to your channel.
Hi. I’m glad the video helped. I know OS Flex is a bit limited but it does help to stop certain older laptops and desktops from becoming landfill. It’s also a great way to use Google’s Cloud based office apps. Hopefully Google will add Android App capability to OS Flex further down the line, as they did with the full ChromeOS. This would really help to drive more people to OS Flex. And yes, it can be a bit of a pain getting to the USB stick for booting. Unfortunately, this is something that changes from one computer to another, or one brand to another, as there are many different BIOS types and boot key types. Thanks for the sub 👍 I’ve got a bunch of Mac and Apple stuff to catch up with but I hope to do more Chrome and Android stuff soon. Cheers, Dave.
You can also upgrade the old Laptops for small money, the CPUs were socketed (what you dont have on modern hardware) at the time so a 2GhZ dual core Athlon or Intel processor + 4 GB RAM will speed up Windows 10 significantly. Did it for fun, works great.
I just gave this a try. The process of creating a bootable USB drive was very easy following your steps. The problem comes when trying to run Chrome from the USB drive. I wanted to give it a try before installing. The process is extremely, painfully, slooooooow!! I finally just got tired of waiting and gave up. the laptop I was trying this on is not that old and should have worked way faster. I did something similar a couple of years ago with a distro of Linux on a laptop even older than this one, and the process went way better. I would say that if you don't want or need something specific from Chrome, go with Linux.
Hey David, thanks for the video. I have installed Chrome OS Flex on my surface 3. But, touchscreen is not working after the installation and the bluetooth cannot be toggled on. I tried via crosh > shell, but it’s not going into configuration mode and I am getting unknown command error. Can you please help me?
Great video! Thank you. I tried the USB boot option on my old Lenovo Yoga 11s. Really liked Chrome OS Flex. Booting up took a few trial and errors. Using SD card, when it works, it's not stable and crashes often (with built-in card reader or USB reader).... using USB key directly does work better. However, Chrome OS Flex doesn't seem to recognize the built-in wifi module. Tried using an USB wifi adapter I have lying around but didnt work either. My work-around is an USB ethernet adapter because the Yoga 11s doesnt have ethernet built-in. While it works, this work-around is not portable and dependent on available ethernet connection. Also not working is the mic and sound components. I guess the Yoga 11s is too proprietary. Great job on this video nevertheless.
Just tried Chrome OS Flex on an old Thinkpad T440. Ran perfectly. Everything works. As for the Yoga 11s, it is now running Ubuntu very smoothly. Everything works and running faster than Windows 7 that it originally came with.
thanks for the information I just installed chrome os flex on to my old HP laptop that has only 32 gig of storage and a 4 gig of ram this OS make new life into my laptop it run very fast and easy to used for school as well thanks as again
Great video. Watched it this afternoon and then just for a laugh I setup Chrome on a stick and booted my 2013 11 inch Macbook Air onto it. It WORKS!! I can't believe it. The only problem I had was with my home wifi (combo 5GHz/2.4 GHz setup that does fool some devices). Got it working with my mobile phone's hotspot all fine and configured my google setup. I am now wondering if I plug into other devices will it reconfigure to those too. Used to carry my Apple setup on a stick that could boot any mac into my settings. Chrome doing the same thing? Could be useful if it does.
Tried it after POST, it just shows the Chrome logo and gets stuck on a blank screen. So, until this is fixed, I'm going to stick with Neverware-Cloudready on Chromium. This is really interesting and I'd love to see them fix this the soonest. Great video, David.
Brilliant video, David. I am going to use your directions to install ChromeOS Flex on my Surface Pro 3 which is now out of Microsoft support. Just a couple of questions. Did you have to turn off secure boot? And does the touch screen work?

Uhm... I don't know if this is meant to happen but it went to -57 seconds remaining and then reset the process and also it closed Google Chrome and the extension itself. Disconnect it Now Before Doing This Process, or if you want to Install it on a 2nd Hard Drive, Please Backup 2nd Drive's Data because this installation will Also Wipe Out The Entire Hard Drive Connected To The PC or Laptop!
Will this installation also wipe my other local disk partitions or just the local disk partition in which i have my windows installed? I need a quick answer please.

Hi Phil. Unfortunately, not all peripherals and not all computers will 100% work, checkout the Google compatibility list, link in description. Once Flex comes out of beta and is on full release, maybe we see some better compatibility. Cheers, Dave.
Hi Graham. Yes, the installer will make any necessary changes that it needs during the install, so previous GPT or MBR partitioning/formatting won’t be an issue. Don’t forget, everything on the drive you install to will be deleted. So just make sure to back off any important data or files if you have any before installing Flex. Cheers, Dave.
Love your answer but I'm sure the many contributions on the subject of OS flex intimate that it's 'optimised' for GPT. If they're wrong I'll give it a go.

It doesn't, and it hasn't in the more than decade it has been on the market
their touch screen interfacing is abysmal and even Windows offers a superior product in this regard
Without ms office suite chrome os is useless
@@sumitchaudhary343 ms word hasn't been a killer app in a long time. For 99% of people Google office and office 365 will be enough.
I'd say the Adobe suites are the big issue, but those bloated beasties aren't going to run well on older machines anyhow.
Its good for nothing except typing and printing so if you are a gamer keep windows
Great job ! I recently had to recover a Chromebook using that tool. It took me several attempts. You got it done smoothly. I'm going to try on some of my old laptops. Doing it on a surface tablet is a great use of this application.
Change up your flash drive my friend and you may get fairer results!🤝
It doesn't work anymore
I'd say Chrome OS Flex would be useful for the $200-$300 laptops like the Gateway, HP Stream, and ASUS L410 which should be running Chrome OS rather than Windows 10/11 since the hardware isn't suited for Windows in mind. The downside of Flex compared to ChromeOS or FydeOS is you don't get Android app support though you can compensate this with an Android phone (such as Samsung or OnePlus), a Chromebook, or Windows 11 if it arrives although it doesn't use Google Play.
I got a hp stream
yeah i agree, my tablet came with windows 10 but since it has an intel atom processor thats clocked at 1.4 ghz windows 10 ran painfully slow so chrome os fixed almost everything
Works great on the vast majority of laptops sold because they came with feeble processors and limited memory to begin with.
Wow! Surface 2 is really old and Chrome OS Flex did give it new life! Good one Dave!
This video is so perfect in presenting and audio quality, thanks for the video 🔥❤️
You are very welcome 👍 Cheers, Dave.
The video was very good and I was able to resurrect my old laptop into a working laptop! Thanks for the presentation it really helped me.
Awesome, I’m glad it helped and you are very welcome 👍
thank you very much the process was long and daunting and you video simplified it and i actually managed to preform it kudos
Hi Daniel. You are very welcome and thank you for your kind comment. Cheers, Dave.
I just installed Flex on my Surface Pro 3, and it works great.
Bluetooth keyboard touchscreen all works fine.
Super fast and battery life is much better.
Thanks for sharing 👍 Cheers, Dave.
Excellent, clear, concise presentation, David. Thanks!
You are very welcome 👍 Cheers, Dave.
Such a clear and easy video to follow. Thanks for your time in producing the video.
Excellent video and great that you we’ve very enthusiastic about using the os with an old machine.

There's no support for PlayStore and it's disappointing 😥

it's coming soon, chrome os flex is still in the beta phase
@@DavidHarry ah good thats my one hold out, I may have a bootable Chrome OS usb for fun but without play store no dice
CloudReady and Flex currently do not support running Android or Linux Apps. maybe they will one day.

Yes, thanks for a clearly stated procedure for the conversion.
You are very welcome 👍
This is brilliant! Fast, secure and effortless.
Nice one, Sasha 👍 Cheers, Dave.
thanks for the information I just installed chrome os flex on to my old HP laptop that has only 32 gig of storage and a 4 gig of ram this OS make new life into my laptop it run very fast and easy to used for school as well thanks as again
Excellent precise instructions David. Nice one!
Could be useful if it does.
i have downloaded it in my 9 year old laptop and works perfectly
Tried it after POST, it just shows the Chrome logo and gets stuck on a blank screen. So, until this is fixed, I'm going to stick with Neverware-Cloudready on Chromium. This is really interesting and I'd love to see them fix this the soonest. Great video, David.
I came here just to enjoy David's wonderful accent.
But not quite as wonderful as your comment, Dennis. Cheers, Dave.

Brilliant video, David. I am going to use your directions to install ChromeOS Flex on my Surface Pro 3 which is now out of Microsoft support. Just a couple of questions. Did you have to turn off secure boot? And does the touch screen work?

Hi, Ludwig. Yes you can but just make sure that the drive you want to install it on is the only connected drive on the computer during the installation. Cheers, Dave.
I have an old AMD based Dell Inspiron One windows 7 all in one computer. Flex installed in minutes. Almost everything worked including wireless keyboard and mouse. The only problem is I am unable to turn on Bluetooth, makes signing in a bit cumbersome. Performance is more than adequate. I also installed it on a very old Dell netbook with an Intel CM3 processor. It installed no problem but runs like a turtle.

Does the surface webcam or windows in-built webcam work in Chrome OS Flex?
Would the instructions work for an old laptop with MBR partition?
