This must have been the production in the year following the inaugeration of the Munich Opera House after rebuilding and refurbish in November 1963 when Jess Thomas was double billed back to back in gala performances of Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten and Wagner's Meistersingers. Keilberth was the house conductor then. There must be TV broadcast films of those performances too (I have seen a few small excerpts) but by God where are they? I would bite my own arm off to see that FoSh with Ingrid Bjoner, Inge Borkh, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as well as Jess Thomas, plus Hans Hotter and Marta Modl!!!!! Wow!
This is one of the greatest opera videos I have ever seen. Very creative production making the best of the black and white format. Eternally grateful to the kind fellow that placed it here. Daphne is as great as any Strauss opera.
This is my first time listening to this opera, and the singing was amazing. However, I did not find that there was a melody, and how any of these great singers could memorize such an unmelodious work is amazing.
The closed caption (CC) function on TH-cam generates nearly unreadable subtitles - white letters on a light gray background. Hopefully they are working to fix this.
You have to click the 'subtitles/closed captions (c)' button on the play bar, or click the 'Settings' icon and select English subs. Hope this helps! The subtitles aren't baked into the video, but overlaid on top through the TH-cam player.
Stefania Woytowicz created Gorecki’s gorgeous Symphony #3, The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs in 1976. It wasn’t till Dawn Upshaw recorded it that people could actually hear how gorgeous the music is. Ms. Woytowicz was not great there (or here). This video is lip-synced. 😴
James King is absolutely majestic here. His last aria is unbeliveable.
Du aber, stärkster
Erhabener Vater,
Zeus Kronion!
Beautiful
Two years later Fritz Wunderlich died in an accident. This shows the future he could have had in dramatic roles.
James King was born to be Apollo!
I have been looking FOREVER for a video of this with English subtitles. I dreamed about this opera last night. Finally I can watch it. Thank you!
No problem! Enjoy :)

Vielen herzlichen Dank.
Not the greatest singing from Daphne, but what a rare treat to have a video performance of this rare opera!
Then what is?
Capolavoro tra i capolavori di Strauss, inarrivabile la tensione emotiva del finale del maestro Keilberth,da brividi .grazie

Wow, what a precious upload! Thank you so much for sharing this with us, especially with subtitles included! Wonderful cast, what a treat!
Keilberth is wonderful. I like his Mozart, Reger , Bruckner, Strauss and Wagner recordings.

Hertha Töpper singt auch so großartig ^_^ Und Woytowicz klingt so kristallklar wie Bogna Sokorska ^_^
Thanks for posting this King is terrific as usual and all really well put together.
great, Tupperware Terry, please keep the lid on that.
Большое спасибо!!! Это великолепно!
Thank you! What a wonder!
Thanks for having this up!
ahhhhhh love
Very beautiful, thank you for uploading
Daphne and Ariadne auf Naxos are Strauss' two finest operas, to my taste.
Late Strauss, which Daphne is, usually not given the respect it deserves.
Thank you, whoever you are.

If you listen to it again a couple of times you might pick up a few more melodies - a work like this may not give up all its secrets on first listen.
Here's one catchy tune! th-cam.com/video/kBiuifYYoLM/w-d-xo.html
@@UlfilasNZ Hi, I tried several times, but I am clearly missing something because it's a very popular opera that has received raves.
Well, we can't love everything!

Hi, I would love to have this video recording myself, since I’m a huge fan of Daphne and James King. Is there any way to obtain it in high quality?

I found you can fix this in settings.
Where are the captions? I see none
