There are actually around seven temples around Lempuyangan temple complex, and the proper Lempuyangan temple is indeed the one on top of the mountain. But locals would surely know that tourists are only interested in visiting what foreigners dub “Gate of Heaven” on social media, so I don’t know how you ended up going that direction.
Maybe it was the way you asked? What language did you ask your questions in? Even if you speak Malay (I doubt it), it’s safer to ask in English, as Malay and Indonesian are different enough to create confusion and misunderstanding.
