    Thanks for all the information I really enjoy watching your videos unfortunately I still can’t get the nettle to bring up the thread. It worked when I got it two days ago but it was really stiff so I greased and oiled it and now it runs smooth but I still have the thread nettle problem. I did everything you mentioned over and over. I hate to send it back but I’ve been working on it for two days.
    Keep up the good work.

    I know you've done a few of these videos but thank you for doing so many. In each one I learn a little more about how to make the machine work the way it should (or at least how I want it to). My wife and I just bought one and we're trying to get the tension right. We've broken two needles this evening and we're taking a break until I've ground the bobbin carrier and polished the bobbins. The tension through the holes and under the spring seem fine but the reel seems to stick in the holder so, fingers crossed, we'll resolve that issue with metal polish. :)

    Thanks for another good follow up video on this machine.
    I did a knee operated pressor foot lifter that came out better than I thought it would. It is very simple, made from common hardware store materials, hacksaw, vise for bending, drill and a screwdriver.
    I made a simple wood frame from pallet wood, but mostly to raise it up so I can used a “C” clamp to place it on the edge on my Juki bench. Just send me a message for photos and directions if it all works. I am tall, so I did this with the idea of leaving both hands free. Thanks again.

      I have 20 some photos to send to anyone who want to lift pressor foot with knee. No spoof, just rod bar, pivots front and rear with linkage going to are next to cam. I drilled small hole even made knee pad adjustable. Looks like the same on on my Juki DDL-5550, as I use “C” clamp to hold it on same table, in front of Juki. Can switch from machine to machine in less time than it take to change thread color!

    On most Singer sewing machines the tension is adjusted by tightening or loosening the screw in the spring. Also, the spring can be bent slightly by removing it and bending it a little bit. It doesn't require a lot of tension on the bobbin and usually, the top tension is much higher than the bottom tension. Just adjust the top tension until the thread has knotted in the middle of the leather. If the top tension is too low you will see it pulled to or even out of the bottom of the material. If the top tension is too high you will see the thread pulled to or through the top of the material. This is true for most of the sewing machines that I am familiar with. Have fun!

    Thanks to all your videos I got my machine working at last. One thing I had to do was to make the small hole in the swiveling piece covering the bobbin case
    slightly larger as I noticed the thread was rubbing against the side of the hole and breaking after a few stitches. The needle or tension wasn't the problem. Next I have to figure out a non fiddly way of winding bobbins.Your idea of a slow hand held screwdriver is good but you still need 3 hands.

      @@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks I wish TH-cam had DM capability, but I wanted share some ideas with you. I recently (accidentally) purchased some 130/21 needles and realized when they arrived that they didn't have the flat shank. I carefully installed them in the right orientation and BAM they worked perfectly. -- I got some "D" needles for sewing 2 layers of 1/4" vegtan (holsters). I was worried the needle would collide with the shuttle or something but none of that was an issue, they popped right in and ran smooth without even adjusting the machine. I got the needles from www.thethreadexchange.com
      Always fun when you make a discovery from a simple mistake :D

      That's awesome, thanks for sharing your mistake. LOL I just went through my bag of extra parts and I was sent an extra bobbin shuttle without a spring too. There is nothing different between the two shuttles other than the missing spring. So with all of that said, I am going to guess it's a replacement part and will need a spring added to it to allow it to work properly. I have heard of people sewing without it, but they eventually run into some issues.

    Good morning Harrison. I’m having some problems. One of the cams is rubbing on the shaft that move the presser foot. It is starting to wear. When I move the crank it resists about the 11 o’clock position. The bobbin isn’t picking up and cutting the needle thread. It was running great a few days ago. I don’t know what happened. I changed bobbins, thread, (both bobbin and needle), changed the crank below the bobbin and adjusted the crank shaft. What else?

    • @sswcustomsewing4276
      @sswcustomsewing4276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Last resort you probably wont have to you could bend the iron back until it makes contact with the cam probably not. Check the bolt that goes through that arm they bend, wear, get sticky from dust, or they are just a junk bolt from day one. I replaced every nut, bolt, screw, washer, and fastener with brand new grade 8 from the Auto parts store. Place a nylon bushing between the arm and machine space it so it is not binding. I had to use nylon bushings on all of the arms they are pretty cheap and they are not going to oxidize or cause corrosion. As for oiling your machine I highly recommend Lily White Oil aka 100% pure non staining mineral oil because you do not want anything that is going to be gummy. These machines are crude, annoying, and require a lot of tinkering, cleaning, polishing, and fine tuning before they will stitch 3 yards without missing a stitch. On those cams and bushings I have used a very light film of white lubriplate engine assembly lubricant or black moly engine assembly lubricant it reduces the mess of the oil. Look at the spring that pulls tension on the arm they fall off or break. My machine didn't come with that outside spring on the arm so I found another spring at a hardware store. Even the presser foot springs on the nut I replaced those on my machine before they broke. Don't give up you can make it work its just part of learning. You can have these same annoying problems with a $3000 Industrial sewing machine. Check for little pieces of thread stuck in spots in these machines where you don't think it will go when that happens they love to act up. Hopefully I was able to help you out.

    • @sswcustomsewing4276
      @sswcustomsewing4276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the little bearings on the ends of the arms in the hand wheel I had a little piece of thread get in one and cause it to bind. Needle bar adjustment check it. With the top thread going through place the shuttle in slowly turn the handle watch and see if it grabs the loop. When you set your timing on the shuttle watch at what point does the hook pull the loop of your thread. The handle at 12 o clock position I marked my wheel with a tab and dots for timing because some shuttles in these machines you have to fine tune them back or forward a tooth timing them.

    • @MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
      @MainelyAcresFarmBrooks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where you had your machine running fine and it stopped after changing the thread/bobbin I am going to guess it's a timing issue. Plus you moved the cams, so more than likely that's what cause the issues. We should meet up again on the video chat before you go changing things again

    • @sswcustomsewing4276
      @sswcustomsewing4276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks My machine is operating perfectly fine for medium and heavy work. I have modified a second needle bar so I can use industrial sewing machine needles they last longer. The only challenge I have with my machine is that I have a more difficult time getting it to do a nice job sewing long straight lines on light cloth like muslin or linen yet it is not made for that application. No problems with a patch/mend on light items.
      These machines are fun for learning, for teaching others, great as a backup machine, for patch/mend projects, hobby, home, a helpful little home machine, and they are a great starter machine. After a while a person will outgrow this cobbler machine, figure out its limitations, limited availability of parts, and want something else.
      From my own experience I would recommend anyone who is going to actually sew medium to heavy material every day of the week to keep sewing with what you have, save your money and buy a brand new or good used Industrial sewing machine with a clutch motor made by Pfaff, Consew, Juki, Chandler, Singer Industrial or any other brand of their choice. Change it up keep practicing and having fun. I love sewing it doesn't get boring and your constantly learning something new every single day.

    • @sswcustomsewing4276

      Look at the adjustment screw on the arm that runs off the inside cam. Now you should see a little screw going through the the cast frame back away from where the head bolts to the top with a little coil spring under it on the frame controlling the stitch length and turn it in a little bit this will adjust the length of your stitch. If that doesn't work check the spring tension of the 2 coil springs right behind this adjustment. I have had this problem with my machine too. Hopefully this helps you.

    Thanks for the video. I am looking into making some redisigning of the shuttle tension system on my machine. I have it working with 277 thread and 25 ga needles. I want to try 307 thread. I know the top half of the mqchine will do it, but the shuttle tension is going to give me issues. With the thicker thread im using the hole furthest from the spring screw and the screw just tight enough to hold the spring, and this is still too much tension. To compensate, i have to use both tensioners at the top. One is fully thight, and the other is about half way tight.
    If you need pictures of the mods i had to do to fit the 25 needle in there, let me know.
    Right now i’m pushing this thing with a 25 ga needle, 277 thread tru 4 layers of 8-9 oz veg tan. Aabout 3/4”. It works, but it’s a bit cumbersome. It takes 2 hands to turn the wheel, and then on the upstroke i have to help the presser foot stay down, because the thick leather holds on to the needle tight enough to lift the presser foot which is as tight as it will go.

      I would try bending the tension spring to cut back on the drag. If that works I would buy another shuttle case so I could switch back to the thinner stuff. Maybe play around with a lighter spring material. For the presser foot I am not sure how to make that any better, your kind of at the limits of the machine. Thank you for all your hard work and tips!!

      With really heavy thread, try simply not using the spring and leading the thread diagonally from the outside hole to the inside one.

      You can run plastic bobbins or aluminum in these machines. The bobbin shuttle on these patcher machines should be the same size as the singer 29k with the smaller shuttle and bobbin. I have used magnetic guides on my machine and have not had any problems. You could place a tiny piece of felt or a small spring applying just enough pressure on top of the bobbin I have seen that done before on sewing machines. Hopefully you find something that works.

I have threaded and rethreaded both the top thread as well as watching your bobbin videos over and over and this machine will NOT draw up the monofilament thread from the bobbin and it keeps breaking the top thread. WHAT do I do?? I have a project that is covering some chairs with vinyl and I can not afford an industrial electric machine this is holding up my project and my client is NOT Happy about the delay.

      I agree with manly acres. Are you using the correct size needle with your thread? I have no idea what threads you use I have needles with a longer slot from size #18 to #22 they work better with certain thread types and sizes I use. Look up the needle and thread test if you don't know how to do it some threads and needles don't work very well together. #18 HAx1 Organ sharp point needle with with 92 bonded polyester upholstery thread or 69 bonded polyester thread works just fine. Could be the the thread check for ragged or rough spots I have had to toss junk thread.

    The threads always broke, especially the top thread, i bypassed the top tensioner and not using the lower tension on the bobbin shuttle, still the same. it looked like the top thread line jammed inside the bobbin shuttle while making knot with the lower threads, is it too tight fit of the shuttle? it does pick up the lower bobbin line, hope you have tips for thread breaking, thanks

      Check the travel of your thread from the tensioners to the hole where you loop it through and feed it down the needle bar see if you have anything grabbing it like that little spring I had to de burr and adjust that little spring. I remember a burr at the bottom indide of the needle bar I had to smooth out of my machine.

      @@brenescutin Agreed with Ma. Out of curiosity what needle size ? What needle type ? Can you pull the bobbin thread up through the hole with the top thread by slowly turning the crank watching the needle go down and seeing the loop come through with the bobbin thread? Hopefully that made sense. I have done a lot of sewing and wrenching with my annoying Chinese cobbler machine I use it every day of the week. Someday I will be able to replace it with a industrial cylinder bed type machine. However these are great for learning, and importantly having fun.
