The way Chris describes the feel for 90s movies being between the 80s and the 2000s movies is absolutely perfect. I could not have said it better myself. The Rock is another one of my favorites from the 90s...love it.
Had the same experience during the middle of the pandemic, as I was trying to watch a different movie every night. In that lockdown period of two years, I watched nearly 700 films, and this is one of the ones that stood out. I had to scoop my jaw off the floor.
My best memory of watching Speed. High school band trip. We watched on the bus. Once we got to the part of the film where Keanu's on the bus, our driver comes on the PA system and tells us how fast we're going. Much cheering ensued.
@@thefonzkiss tour bus, it had teeny TVs in the ceiling spaced throughout. And I'm Canadian, so I guess maybe we should call it a North American thing...
I first saw Speed in 1997 in my aunt's apartment in San Fransisco. It's her 2nd marriage and we flew there from Jakarta to attend the wedding. Her husband saw me and precisely figured out how to keep me entertained. So, he showed me this film. I was hooked from the beginning to end. Happy times.
When Jack gets the call about Harry and the camera is panning out slowly on him and he explodes with rage and pain. MAN that moment has always been so compelling to me. Some of Keanus best acting. No one really talks about it.
Love this movie because all the things actually happen. That elevator falls. That bus explodes. That subway train crashes thru all the things. First lasting memory is probably the intensity of the scene where the officers are trying to get all the people off the elevator while it’s clearly unstable and the one woman is SO scared!
Nobody has seen Dennis Hopper until they've seen him in this. He's even more of an over-the-top cartoon character than he was in Super Mario Bros., and God bless him for it.
I remember watching Speed on a rental VHS and being hooked immediately. One scene That's stuck in my mind is the crane folding under the elevator's weight :)
I think Goldeneye definitely qualifies as that 90s sweet spot of cheese and realism. Maybe a big more on the cheese side but that's my favorite type of Bond film.
I'd say Goldeneye was less cheesy than the rest of Brosnan's films personally [it looks super serious compared to Die Another Day anyway!]. Shows how time moves on that it's 30 years old next year.
been saying this for years. 90s movies were just pure fun adrenaline. they had the perfect balance of realism and intelligence with cheesy tone and entertainment. And this is not limited to only action movies, every genre in the 90s had this formula.
80's and 90's action thrillers are still the best.. 90's action flicks, die hard 2, true lies, eraser, speed, point break, cliffhanger, in the line of fire, air force one, executive decision, matrix, fifth element, the rock, con air, T2, face off, desperado, escape from L.A., demolition man, out for justice, under siege 1 and 2, blade, total recall, mission impossible, clear and present danger.. what a time to be alive
I saw this at a preview screening one week before the actual release. Exhilarating! So exciting and funny. I re-watched it about six years ago for a project, having not seen it for a decade (probably longer), and was so joyful at the celebratory chord that the film's score strikes when Keanu and Sandra emerge from underneath the bus on the sliding platform and skid to safety. In fact, the whole reason why I went to see "Chain Reaction" two years after "Speed" came out is because one of the TV commercials used a piece of the "Speed" score. I KNEW that that music wouldn't be in "Chain Reaction", but the simple fact of that music's inclusion in the commercial got me excited to see a much less exciting movie.
I saw it in theatres with my uncle and aunts. Amazing time ever!!!! I remember it came out on video cassette and was on sale rite away for 22 dollars. I bought it and had the rest of my whole family watch it!!!
"I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down."
Great video on one of my favorite movies! I just recently became a curator at the Idaho Film Society in Boise, so to celebrate the 30th anniversary, I will be screening Speed at their theater! Very happy and honored to do that!
I remember watching it in the movie theater, then months later when i was sick and my mom brought it home on VHS. I was so sick, fever etc, but couldn't wait to watch the movie again!
I was 14 in 1994 and so was old enough to see this when it first came out….. but I didn’t. I watched it for the first time ever today. No idea why I put off watching it for 30 years, but so glad I’ve finally seen it. Such an entertaining film.
Sometimes a classic just slips by you,it can happen. Yeah, its intense and just so entertaining. Dennis Hopper is a great villain and I love that he only wants money,no political or psychotic motivation (except being a psycho).
I remember going to see this in the theater the weekend it released. It’s hard to describe the anticipation and the word of mouth hype for this movie in a pre-Internet era. People could not wait to see this in the theaters and it delivered in a big way.
I love the immediate focus/gushing on the writing. Speed is one of my favorite examples of good clean movie writing and structure. Screenplay 101 stuff to geek out over. Three acts, three vehicles. Jack's arc is clearly spelled out at the end of act 1. Just about every single minute adds something to the plot. Average a minute per page of screenplay, end each one with some new problem thrown at the hero, and you've got a movie that is also literally a page-turner. Not one minute/page wasted adding new threat or problem or question, just unrelenting intrigue to glue people to the screen. And it's not as simple as just that because each matter needs to be satisfyingly resolved by the end. Love me a textbook 3-act fast-paced action movie. Great choice, man!
The score that plays when Keanu and Sandra slide out from under the bus is indescribably good. I always get chills during that part! Man, I love this movie! It is perfection.
I had a layover at LAX a couple of years ago, and because of renovations, I had to take a bus between terminals. Riding the bus on the grounds of LAX had an impact on me I didn’t realize until I was on the plane and found myself in the mood to watch Speed. When they turned into the airport, I fangirled a bit because I had just been there, and I had been there on a bus!
I watched this film again for only the second time two months ago. First watched in the 90s. I'd forgotten how enthralling it is. One thing people don't mention is the editing. It's first class. Such a great film
I was lucky enough to see this in the theater when it was first released. I knew almost nothing about it ahead of time and was a little bit hesitant because I hadn't seen many action movies up to that point. My friend wanted to check it out, so I decided to join him. Ended up being one of my favorite movie-going experiences ever. You touched upon most of the elements that made this movie great. I think one of reasons it works so damn well, is that it manages to make the viewer feel like they're actually riding the bus right alongside Keanu, Sandra and the rest of the passengers. When they're finally successful in getting all of those people safely off the bus, and then the two of them glide away together into the embrace of those orange cones, the entire audience in my theater erupted into applause! It was just incredible.
That smile and deep breath at the beginning 🤣 full agree! My grandma had two tapes: the first tape of Titanic and Speed. Speed is one of my favorite odd comfort movies when I want to feel close to her ❤
He's talking about movies he likes here, just like he's only talking about new movies he likes in his regular reviews. He's just talking positively about movies now. If you want to watch someone tear apart movies, there are thousands of videos from other TH-camrs who do that.
I smiled before clicking on the video, i smiled while watching the video and continued to smile long after. I ADORE speed! Everything i love about the movie, you touched on and it’s so great! 😊❤
I saw it on the tv for the first time. I was little but I remember having a crush on Sandra Bullock, she was so pretty. I had seen Keanu in Point Break and I thought he was awesome. When the bus crashes into the plane, I remember thinking hope there's no one on that plane. 😂
It's such an exciting movie that ratchets up again and again and again from beginning to end. The two leads CLEARLY have chemistry and I love it. I remember watching Speed for the first time when it came to TV three years later. Naturally I taped and rewatched it so many times as a kid that when I watch Speed today I'm still half expecting the ads to jump in at certain points in the film.
I watched it on VCD, I was around 6-7 years old and it totally blew my mind. This movie made me shout to others busses around me "Bomb on Bus" while I used to return home from school 😂
I went and watched this five times in theaters that summer. This and True Lies were my movies of 1994. By the way…I get goose bumps when Jack and Annie get off the bus. I credit it to the Mark Mancina crescendo score. Friggin awesome right there
Saw this movie as a part of my movie club. Man, I'm so happy Im part of it because I get to experience movies I wouldn't normally watch. And Speed.. can't even describe how I felt. I got actually angry for not seeing it as a kid. It's that 90s nostalgia feel about movies. I felt like a kid again watching movies, eating pizza and sitting on the floor with my legs crossed.
I watched it on tv several times when I was a kid. Now, in the 4K streaming era I've watched it a couple of more times and it's only better than ever. A true classic with two classic actors. This movie never gets old
Watching Speed and Speed 2 back to back is quite an experience, and Speed 2 has one of my favorite lines in a movie ever "Annie! Come back, you're my hostage!"
@@santos8468he also made a seriously good "Joker" face for a split second. I admit that the best aspect of Speed 2 was Willem Dafoe as the main villain.
What I love about Speed is that every single angle of the bus is utilized and made interesting both visually and for the story. The security camera, the emergency exit, the door, all of the seats, the front of the bus, the back of the bus. And the same goes for the train and the elevator too. They utilize each location to its fullest potential
Agreed Chris. This film was excellent....its rare that scrolling through TV channels....whenever I come across 'Speed', I feel compelled to watch it despite seeing it numerous times....similar to if I see 'Jaws' or 'Die Hard'
I saw this in the theater and I felt like I needed to have a roller coaster harness during the movie. I was literally on the edge of my seat for 2 hours, it was great!! I need to rewatch this classic.
Oh thank God you finally reviewed this!! This is by far my favorite Keanu Reeves movie I've ever seen! Non-stop, action packed, holding your breath and never coming up for air, popcorn flick extravaganza!!! I love this movie and so happy you finally got around to talking about it!!
I’m so glad you did this video. I LOVE this movie. I hope you get to see it in a theater. I saw it at least 4 times, maybe more, while it was still in theaters. I even took my mother to see it, and she liked it!
This was me and my brothers’s favourite movie when our parents taped this movie on VHS in 2009. We must have watched it at least 40 times. We still quote it to this day!
One of my favorite movies ever too, a line that cracks me up every time is, “Sir, I’m gonna take your phone “…”TAKE THE PHONE!” 😂😂😂 they don’t make them this good anymore. Classic!
i saw SPEED during its cinema run. It was a freaking blast from beginning to end. Keanu was perfect for the role-- tough, but with a believably sweet core, Sandra was a breath of fresh air and I was crestfallen when Jeff Daniels' character died. But, man, what I wouldn't give to watch that movie for the first time, again, without any spoilers.
My family was in a Chalet for my birthday and my cousin was in love with this movie and she got the VHS tape as one of her Christmas gifts. We then immediately popped it in and gathered around to watch it.
I did see it in theaters...i actually had to convince my friends in the theatre not to go see Beverly Hills cop 3 and lets go see this movie and we did and they all thank me for it because they thought it was going to be a bad movie...but they loved it...i actually dropped my huge bucket of popcorn all over the floor as i enter the cinema hall... everyone laughing it was a night i will never forget!
When I first saw the movie, it was theaters as a kid. I was 13. Big fan of Dennis Hopper at the time (dude was doing Nike commercials with Dennis Rodman and my mom was super into Pale Rider and Hang Em High) and he did not disappoint. That crazy, unhinged yet purposefully holding on by that one thread. Not that he was scared to go, but that he enjoyed the thrill that he was that close. Absolute greatness.
Your recycling recurring joke, every time, and I mean every, single, time, that I say, "debris" it's Bill Paxton from Twister. "DebrIIIIIiiis?" It's the only thing I do that has consistently gotten a chuckle out of the mrs over and over again, forever. It never fails, and I don't do it for the laugh. Hell I do it if I'm alone and I think the word. It's literally something inside of me, like an alarm that goes off, whenever I hear or have to say that word, like it's Peewee's Playhouse. 😂
I was 13 and saw this in theatres. I can truthfully say this was the first movie where I was fully consumed to what was going on from start to finish. I recall a sense of relief when keanu and Sandra get off the bus. The plot to this film is almost silly if you will, but the filmmakers just managed to pull off something so amazing. There will never be anything like Speed ever again in our lifetime.
Yes, I saw this in a theater at Penn State when I first started college during a summer session. With almost no one there, I had no one to interact with and then this movie came out and I saw it a half dozen times. My favorite movie.
6:33 This was her first mainstream 'leading role' and she was coming off her role in 'Demolition man' the pervious year [which would be a good film for 'feature presentation'] where she was brought in during filming as a replacement for Lori Petty [as it was a bit of a troubled shoot].
I understand your love. I've had the same love for this movie. It holds a personal place for me. I was just hired at our small town local theater and this was the first movie that I helped set up on the reels and screen before my friends. I must have watched it 100 times and then some when it hit home video. It's a perfect script, it's non-stop and it's fun!! This and Die Hard with a Vengeance were in constant rotation for a long time at my house.
Speed is a golden standard for action movies, one of the best there is! Remember watching it with my dad when i was younger and was absolutely enthralled with it! My dad also showed me Armageddon when i was like 6 or 7 years old and convinced me that the astroid was real and heading for earth and stuff so i was pretty stressed out during that movie aswell lol
I started this video, and was convinced to watch Speed for the first time after the first minute. Absolutely loved the movie, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock chemistry was so sweet, and man you're right about Jack he does have brains. That idea to use the window washing lift to hold the elevator was brilliant.
I remember seeing the trailers for this on TV and in other movies and I couldn't wait. So I went to the movies with my grandmother whom I was living with while in college after my grandpa died. Her knee never stopped shaking the entire time. We both enjoyed it very much. I've owned it ever since both on VHS and now Blu-ray. I watch it once a year at least.
Please keep doing these feature presentation reviews! This may be my favorite video of yours that I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot of of them. Excellent breakdown.
Thank you Chris for quite possibly the best review to my favourite action film ever! I know exactly what you mean about your parents being buses driver's, my father was a bus driver and watching it with him on the big screen was such a Payne, the ending in the subway, the train miniature as it crashes and breaks in two then comes out the subway still holds up to this day, film making at its best 👌🏻
You're right about the soundtrack!! The opening credit sequence gets me so pumped because of the music. All excited for what is about to come. So many movies these days jump right in.
Growing up as a kid, my parents typically wouldn't allow me to watch rated R films . However, Speed was one of those few exceptions. It was a trill to watch every time. Very underrated action film!
This was a joy to watch, I love speed and to see your enjoyment for it etched across your face brought back every feeling I have had but forgotten for this absolute classic! Thank you
I love this movie. I think my earliest memory of seeing it I recognized Alan Ruck and I couldn't place where I had seen him until the look on his face as he put his head down as they jumped the bridge. I realized than I recognized him from having watched Twister before. Love love this movie (I realize this came before Twister, however I watched Twister first)
A great review of one of my favorite movies. Reminded me how awesome Speed still is. I think I saw it five or six times in the theater during the summer of '94. Worth every penny.
I did get to see Speed in the cinema! It blew 12yo me away!! I still love it! Re seeing movies with bus driver parents: my dad was an airline pilot, so every plane movie I saw with him got uncomfortable when he scoffed or groaned at the MANY unrealistic things we saw together in the cinema 😂😂 Eg Air Force One
Great movie, great cast and awesome soundtrack. Obviously, Keanu and Bullock are perfect for their roles but seeing Jeff Daniels in a more serious role is always a treat. I remember after rewatching Dumb and Dumber I happened to watch Newsroom and his "America is not the greatest country in the world" speech was spectacular. What an actor. Btw, Speed is on Disney! Rewatching it tonight. 🙌
Speed is fantastic. One of my all time favourites. It's the kind of movie I could watch over and over and never get bored with it. I couldn't even begin to guess how many times I've watched it.
'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down' is a great classic. Keanu at his best.
😂😂😂😂😂
Keanu is always at his best! ❤
🤣🤣🤣
Snap you beat me to this iconic Homer Simpson reference.
Finally, someone got the title of this film right.

The Rock is amazing. Michael Bay before the aliens replaced him.
Face/Off ❤
@@michaeloftaoism I remember seeing Face/Off in theaters. What a trip that movie was and still is.
@@Mholz1987 that's pretty damn cool
I see The Rock, I see Face/Off, can we also get some love for Con Air rounding out Nicholas Cage's 90's action hero arc ❤
As a teenager when Speed came out, it was the first movie I ever watched over and over and over. One of my all-time favorites.
*IT'S 30 YEARS ALREADY?!!!!!!*
*GO BACK!!!!*
For 30 years I have been saying "Pop Quiz Hot Shot!" when I ask people random questions or trivia. Phenomenal villain performance by Dennis Hopper.
I rewatched speed a few years ago as an adult and I couldn't believe how good it was.

What sold me about the movie was not only the constant riveting action, but it was the chemistry of its two leads.

When Jack gets the call about Harry and the camera is panning out slowly on him and he explodes with rage and pain. MAN that moment has always been so compelling to me. Some of Keanus best acting. No one really talks about it.
I feel a chill up my spine at that part! He does intense anger really well.
He is spectacular in this movie and that scene is always very impactful for me as well.

"This is just like Speed 2, except with a bus instead of a boat." Always loved that line.
Speed 2 doesn't exist, to me anyways
A film whose only two fans were, somehow, Siskel and Ebert.
I hate Speed 2 but I will say Willem Dafoe performance is the only worthy part of that movie
Jason Patric awful leading man in Speed 2
@benwasserman8223 Yeah, but Ebert also liked Alaska, Home Alone 3, Cop and a Half and The Happening.
Producer and writer commentary on this movie is one of the best ever made. On any film. Period.

Great movie. Graham Yost also was one of the main guys on Justified. That show was fantastic
I just discovered it and I am binge watching the hell of it! I finished the 3rd season and it's AWESOME!
@@emanuelebresciani6281 enjoy my friend. Finished my second complete rewatch last year. What a ride it was
My favourite line so far... "I'm from Harlan County. (PUNCH!) Down there, we know the difference between dynamite and road flares."
My favorite memory of this movie is Sandra Bullock. Fell for her instantly
I watched it on tv several times when I was a kid. Now, in the 4K streaming era I've watched it a couple of more times and it's only better than ever. A true classic with two classic actors. This movie never gets old
Watching Speed and Speed 2 back to back is quite an experience, and Speed 2 has one of my favorite lines in a movie ever
"Annie! Come back, you're my hostage!"
Willem Dafoe was having a blast in that movie.
@@santos8468he also made a seriously good "Joker" face for a split second. I admit that the best aspect of Speed 2 was Willem Dafoe as the main villain.
Speed 2 was a flop movie.
I absolutely adore this movie,90s action thriller movies truly were the best.
Find someone who looks at you like Chris looks at a copy of Speed
It is definitely one of my ALL-TIME favorite action flicks..........def a classic
You're a star, keep shining bright!
Damn Life-Size get over go back to the doll house
Spot on analysis of why the 90's actions are so great.
I saw Speed earlier this year and I loved it all over again. Might be my favorite action movie of All Time to be fair.
This was me and my brothers’s favourite movie when our parents taped this movie on VHS in 2009. We must have watched it at least 40 times. We still quote it to this day!
One of my favorite movies ever too, a line that cracks me up every time is,
“Sir, I’m gonna take your phone “…”TAKE THE PHONE!” 😂😂😂 they don’t make them this good anymore. Classic!
I got Speed on VHS for Christmas when I was around 9 years old. I watched it constantly lol. Fantastic action movie.
i saw SPEED during its cinema run.
Yeap!. I saw it as a young adult back then, it was great fun. Now you sold it to me again for so many other reasons!! From Canada, Peace Out!!
100% agree with your analysis of 90's action movies. 90's action movies were so much fun.
This was definitely the first film i saw Keanu in and what a introduction. I love Speed. It's a great time. Excellent peak 90s action.
I remember watching speed as a little kid. It was the first rated R movie I watched with my aunt and uncle
Love love this movie
(I realize this came before Twister, however I watched Twister first)
A great review of one of my favorite movies.
Your description of 90s action movies being the perfect bridge between the cheese of the 80s and grit of the 00s was spot on!
Speed is fantastic. One of my all time favourites. It's the kind of movie I could watch over and over and never get bored with it. I couldn't even begin to guess how many times I've watched it.
