The NFL has a very comprehensive list of tiebreakers that they use whenever teams have the same record at the end of a season (not just for the playoffs, but also for draft position). Because each division is a four-way tie, those are dealt with first using these steps: 1. Best winning percentage in head-to-head play amongst the tied teams 2. Best winning percentage within the division 3. Best winning percentage in common games 4. Best intra-conference winning percentage 5. Strength of victory 6. Strength of schedule 7. Point differential in intra-conference games 8. Point differential in all games 9. Points scored in common games 10. Points scored in all games 11. Touchdowns scored If all eleven of those tiebreakers are exhausted and there's still a tie, it goes to a coin flip. Or, a four-sided die in this case. So, all eight division winners are decided by an arbitrary roll of the dice. To determine seeding between the four division winners in a conference in the case of a four-way tie, the following steps are applied: 1. Determine division winners via intra-division tiebreakers 2. Head-to-head sweep (ONLY applicable if one team has beaten every other team in the tie) 3. Best intra-conference winning percentage 4. Best winning percentage in common games (for this to apply, there must be at least 4 common opponents amongst the tied teams) Steps 5 through 11 are the exact same as in the division tiebreakers. If all tiebreakers are exhausted without breaking the tie, it goes to a coin flip. Once again, we would roll the four-sided die to determine both 1 seeds. Then we repeat these steps for the remaining teams, using a three-sided die for the 2 seed and a coin for the 3 seed. With seeds 1-4 determined in both conferences, we now have to decide the three wild card teams in each conference. This is settled using the exact same steps as the tiebreakers for the division winners, with one caveat: after the 5 seed is determined, the two other eligible teams in the 5 seed's division are put through the intra-divisional tiebreakers again, and whoever wins that coin flip is eligible for the 6 seed dice roll. If the dice roll ultimately gives one of the 5 seed's division rivals the 6 seed, then the last team in that division is eligible for the 7 seed. Otherwise, the two other eligible teams in the 6 seed's division are put through a coin flip, just like with the 5 seed's division, and then it's one final dice roll to determine the 7 seed.
for yall who cant read 3 paragraphs for whatever rzn, here it is summarized: *factors for making the playoffs:* - best winning percentage - strength of schedule/wins - point differential - touchdowns scored *in case of a 4 way tie for the division:* - h2h matchups within the division - coin flip **same process with the wild card**
Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs). Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference. Strength of victory in all games. Strength of schedule in all games. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games. Best net points in common games. Best net points in all games. Best net touchdowns in all games. Coin toss
Yup. Which means since zero points were scored, it's literally just a coin flip. A BUNCH of coin flips. If I were Goodell, I'd have a coin flip contest. 33 coins are flipped, one for the league and one for each team. If you match the league, you get to flip again. If you don't match the league, you're out...but stick around. Everyone who lost after the first flip are in Group 1. Everyone who lost after the second flip are in Group 2. And so on. Say by ten flips everybody is out. Well now you have ten groups in a specific order: play the coin flip game again with each group to form sub-groups. Then do it again and again and again until you have 32 teams in order. Now seed them all accordingly
If it perfectly follows NFL tiebreaking procedures, then it would be mostly random. However, the way the tiebreaker works, it would actually slightly favor wildcard teams being from the same division. Division winners would be entirely random. For wildcard tiebreakers, the divisional tiebreaker is applied to all 3 remaining teams withing the same division until there is only one team from each division. This would come down to coin toss. Then, the tiebreaker is applied again to determine who the wild card is. So the first wildcard spot would be random. For the second and third wildcard spots, teams in the same division that was picked for a previous wildcard spot would have only 1 competitor to win the divisional portion of the tiebreaker, or if the first 2 wildcards were the same division, then the remaining team would not have a divisional tiebreaker well all other teams would.
@saminabtiti8223 strength of schedule is just the combined record of every team that a team played. Strength of schedule would be the same for everyone.
ACCORDING TO THE NFL RULES. If EVERY TEAM ties EVERY GAME. It is a COIN FLIP for each division. 2 teams from each division pick heads, the other 2 pick tails. Which ever side it lands on those 2 are in. To determen seading, it goes to points differentural.
That can’t be the case here though, because that would mean that two teams out of the packers, lions, viking and bears wouldn’t have made it, plus that gives you eight teams moving into the playoffs
The coin flip part is correct, but the "2 teams are heads.... whichever side it lands on those 2 are in" part is incorrect. Only one team can win the division (affects homefield and whatnot) and there are only 7 playoff spots per conference, but this would make 8. The coin flip will determine the division winners, only one team can win each division. Those 4 teams will then need a series of coin flips to determine seeding 1 - 4. The remaining teams after the division will go through a series of coinflips to determine who wins the 3 wild card spots. Actually, there would be a ton of coinflips as each position (15 - 32) needs to be determined precisely for draft orders.
sorry to be that guy but this is completely wrong cuz in the game even though it wasn’t in the vid for long the entire afc north made the playoffs which unfortunately makes ur idea busted… would be cool if that was the way it worked lol (thats the way madden interpreted it tho)
Myth:Can you make the playoffs with only one win and 16 ties? (1-0-16) You would technically be undefeated. Edit: OMG THIS IS THE MOST LIKES I HAVE EVER GOTTEN THANKS SOOOO MUCH!!
I feel it would be no depending on the other teams records. Typically in real life if one team was 10-6-1 and the other 10-7 the 10-6-1 team has a 1/2 win over them. I would think 1-0-16 would be something like 8.5 wins? I have no idea though, just a guess, hopefully @YaBoyPizza tries this myth.
Quite literally yes, at least in NFL terms, although I don't know about madden. If a team went 1-0-16 those 16 games would be nullified and that team would finish with not only a record above .500 but finish with a perfect 1.000
@Jacer_YT while technically you 'Undefeated', the chance of making the playoffs with 1-0-16 the same as with the 8-8-1. Ties are counted as 0.5 loss and 0.5 win, so it's only depends on your division. If you were the 1st team in your division with 7-10, you would make the playoffs with 0-0-17 (8½ wins).
For the curious, the nfl tiebreakers for 3 or more teams are as follows: 1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs). 2. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games. 9. Best net points in common games. 10.Best net points in all games. 11. Best net touchdowns in all games. 12. Coin toss Since all of the first 11 tiebreakers were the same it came down to coin toss thus the random teams making it in.
If it perfectly follows NFL tiebreaking procedures, then it would be mostly random. However, the way the tiebreaker works, it would actually slightly favor wildcard teams being from the same division. Division winners would be entirely random. My prediction on how the madden tiebreaker would work if it was just 0-0-17 is that the division with the most yards from both the AFC AND NFC are guaranteed into the playoffs, and then one team from each of the other divisions are chosen from a coin flip
There are about 32 tie breakers I believe and the last one is a coin toss, there are also things like YPG and YAPG and many other yard type tie breakers
It’s wild that in real life, if all 272 games ended in a 0-0 tie, they just do a coin flip for the divisions. The NFL does have set rules, very specific ones actually based on tie breaking procedures. There are 12 total options if 2 or more teams end in a tie by the end of a season, but if somehow every team ended 0-0, 0-0-17, they just do a coin flip. The last time a game ended 0-0 was in 1943. What’s even more wild is the odds of a season ending in 0-0 and 0-0-17 would be a 1 in 10,000^272 chance, which is essentially 0, it’s that low to calculate.
I wish I knew about this! I would’ve loved to be apart of this! Haha. Also, for the “chance” of snow in a Florida stadium, personally, I would’ve always picked a night game kickoff. I saw, at least on the clips here, that you were doing 1pm games. Maybe try 8pm kickoffs? It’s cooler at night so I feel the chances would be greater. Maybe not. Just something I thought of haha
This is just a thought, but try Jacksonville Jaguars cause they are part of the southern part of Florida and the only part of Florida that it snowed was in southern part of Florida so try Jacksonville, please.
Really hope you all enjoyed this one! What other myths would you like me to try out next?
