An Automatic Gearbox In The Toyota GR86? Not As Bad As It Sounds...

  • Maybe Toyota and Subaru needed to build an automatic transmission option of the BRZ and GR86 siblings, but losing the stick shift seems against the point of such a purposefully engaging drivers' car. And yet, as younger generations seem uninterested in honing their clutch pedal shifting skills, maybe an auto version of the GR86 makes a bit more sense.
    HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle straight up did not know the GR86 even came in an automatic before this exact car arrived for review. Watch as he weighs the pros and cons of picking the traditional torque converter gearbox in a little sports car that drives on rails and corners with the best on the market today.

    These cars are so good they're even good with an automatic. Seriously, that's not a sarcastic dis or anything. There's a reason Toyota (and Subaru) sell a lot of them.

      Yeah nah they don't really sell much of them at all. The GR86 hasn't been out long enough to make a conclusion on this, but the GT86/BRZ definitely were not selling.
      For the record, I adore this car and would 1000% buy one in manual

    Nothing wrong with an automatic. My friend has a similar BRZ, it's a lot of fun. Automatic is just easier to drive and deal with in traffic. Where my friend lives in the DC/North Virginia area, it would be fun to have a stick when you get out of the metropolitan areas with the rolling hills. However, reality hits home once you deal with the city traffic there Lol. I can understand why my friend chose the automatic. I wouldn't mind getting one, but I prefer the practicality of my GTI. I hope they keep these cars around because they are not a lot of options for sporty cars in the $30K range. We are awash with SUV's...

      Man I'm paralyzed and I think this car could actually give me the small sports car experience I've always wanted. Just enough room for my chair and wheels in the back and just enough car for me to handle. Lot's of aftermarket options for them too. Going to look at one tomorrow! Congrats on the new purchase and enjoy!

    Well I really want a car with a manual transmission again. I love driving a manual as far as the rest… mods I don’t think so. Definitely not going to be driving like a race car driver on the street or taking it to a track. Sure I would not mind more hp but I doubt I would ever really use it. I don’t drive like I am in a race on the street. It’s not safe for me or other drivers to drive like a maniac

    I have the GR86 in Auto. I don't care what stats Toyota gave you that you are .4 of a second faster with a manual. You can't out shift me. I will take the Pepsi challenge your shifts are NOT even close to as fast as mine. If you are a pro race driver then maybe. Toyota lied to you guys. The Auto is nice in the snow too.

    • @ak740_
      @ak740_ ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@bj10jgo I have the auto 86. My 0-60 is around 5.6 seconds shifting manually with the paddles in track mode. The auto also has 0 rev hang unlike the manual so the up shifts are faster. Toyota definitely lied to sell more manuals. The one drawback with the auto is that at certain high speeds your down shift will be denied. So you can’t downshift to 7krpm or anything

    You’re paying (assuming sticker) 28k VS 45k for the Supra. Both being the lowest trim. That’s 17,000 difference. For reference. You can buy 3 GR86 to 2 Supras. For the same money.
    How are you @ around the 2 minute mark really gonna complain about less power and noise. For the extra 17,000. You can literally buy another cheap POS car. Or just dump it all on mods.

  • @salmon4o4
    @salmon4o4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Slight correction at 4:15. The GR86 can be equipped from factory with Pilot Sport 4 tires, not the "4s". There is a real difference between the two, despite essentially having the same name.

      @itsthemetho ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Amen! So many people keep saying the GR86/BRZ come with PS4S. No. No, and No.
      PS4S is about 2X the dollars of the PS4. Both PS4 and PS4S are Ultra High Performance Tires, but PS4S is has less treadwear and better dry performance.
      In Australia the PS4S doesn't even come in 215/40R18. Not sporty enough to make that size.

    I got the the 2023 GR86 Premium Edition. Like he is showing here. But mine also came with an amazing system. Kickers in the trunk mine came with 18”inch tires. I absolutely love it. I prefer this car with the paddle edition auto/manual and I think this car is better than a stick to me. He needs put it in track,sports mode and hit the high acc. Every video I watched they are scared of these cars. Why change the exhaust. It’s aGR. Does he even know the complete specs. I also highly recommend this over a meada or Supra. This new boxer engines are on point. Brz is closers to this car.
