    Thanks Rob, an enjoyable video series. It looks like a handy addition to any workshop. Actually I took away something completely different from this one, the use of the small vice in the bandsaw. Hadn't thought of that one, so thanks again. Mart.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another benefit from using the small vice is that it also allows you to tilt/angle the work piece in the jaws so the bottom of the cut will be parallel to the blade, when only cutting part way through/into something.
      Cheers Rob

    I really liked your use of the drill press vise in the bandsaw vise for holding the small part! So simple, but so effective. I’ve never thought of that idea. I’m always amazed by what you can learn by watching others.

    I have done these brackets....slightly differently using a boring head. Normally these are used on milling machines, but they work perfectly in lathe spindles also. The advantaged are that centering is perfect and there is no effort lining things up. You just clamp the bracket in the toolpost and bore using the boring head in the lathe spindle. Thanks for your videos ...Joss in Cork, Ireland.

      Handy way to do it if you have a boring head. Thanks for the tip Joss.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gary,
      I rarely use the big TPG, but it has a large range of stones and an internal quill that is very useful. So it's still better than money in the bank I suppose, so I will keep mine. The biggest bug bear is that it can't be used on the topslide.
      The little pencil air die grinder has probably done more work than big brother as a result, but HILDA should be even more useful given it's power and chuck capacity. Certainly makes any Dremel look pretty wimpy.
      Cheers Rob

      Hi Tim,
      The mount is very rigid and all you need. It's the same design I used on my pencil air die grinder. Some of the mounts you see on the net are so over engineered it's ridiculous.
      Same thing with a cross slide lock, some totally terrible ideas out there ;)

    Nice bit of work. I have a similar setup using a dremel clone which is great for small work but lacks rigidity for bigger grinding tasks. I think I might have to follow your lead and make one with a die grinder.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mounting anything with a plastic body is bad news. They all flex and align horribly. This is way better.
      Rob

    • @caskwith
      @caskwith 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The actual mounting is ok, I used the threaded collar so that's quite sturdy, the problem is lack of power and the spindle bearings, just too much play in them. Your die grinder has more power but more importantly bigger bearings.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK I see. No play or runout with this unit. It's very impressive.
      The first time I looked at one of these I thought it had to be the perfect candidate for a small lathe TPG. I had previously toyed with the idea of mounting an angle grinder with a plate attached to the head mounting screws. But this is better, more rigid, easy to make, and a relatively compact unit.
      Beats me why this style of rotary tool is not sold in Australia by the major tool/handyman suppliers.
      Plus it's good value when you compare it to a full sized die grinder (which once again is too large) and a Dremel style unit.
      Cheers Rob

    can it do a key way in a shaft when the shaft is held in the chuck and a end mill in the Hilda. that way its always going to be on centre

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I expect so. Sounds perfectly logical to me. You would have to take light cuts and control the feed rate by hand.

  • @kevinhamling4675
    @kevinhamling4675 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks great. Could you sharpen drill bits with that setup.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can re-profile them to the correct angle and uniformity, but you still have to grind back relief on each flute by hand.
      I've done this with my full sized TPG. Does a nice easy job of restoring drill tip uniformity.
      Cheers Rob

    Nice build Rob, thanks for sharing. What are your thoughts on building a shield around the disc in case it explodes? I would assume if a wrong handle was turned it could force to much disc into the work and shatter?

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had a 75 mm disc shatter. They are heavily reinforced. They use them a lot in the car repair industry to cut out panels etc so they can handle a lot of flex and curves. The smaller Dremel discs however are very fragile and can go bang quite easily.

      @@Xynudu Legend !!! Thanks Rob 👍 today I purchased the Hilda 400 watt die grinder from AliExpress 11:11 sale. I liked your review of the product. Looks like a decent unit. I particularly like the Jacobs chuck instead of the collet.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The HILDA is a great unit. The chuck is excellent. You will like it a lot. The later unit I replaced it with after I overheated it (all my fault) has the advantage of a machined mounting collar on the nose. So it's an improvement, but I was quite happy with the original HILDA. I use mine regularly, it's just so useful. Cheers Rob

      Hi Roger,
      I made the original 6 mm shanked one I used in my air die grinder. Then BG gave me a 10 mm shanked one which I reduced to 6 mm. Then I discovered you can buy 6mm shanked ones off of Amazon very cheaply.

    Hi! The little wrench has that little tip at the opposite end. I know what that little tip is fore, because on much smaller grinders there is a small hole close to the chuck or 3 mm collet holder. Everything is so tiny that the only way to lock the quill/spindle is to align a hole on a rotary shaft with the hole in the the injected plastic moulding ( no metal on those tiny tools ). Then the tip on the wrench is inserted to stopp the rotation.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The little tip is a crude flat head screw driver to tighten the centre screw on the Dremel style friction disc arbor.
      Rob

      HILDA rotary tools seem to be on many suppliers sites.
      Banggood also sell a 400 watt Drillpro brand which looks much the same. There are also other similar rotary tools with different brand names on the net.

    Hey rob, I was looking at a collect set on banggood and was wondering if you’d had any experience with them? Otherwise what brands would you recommend? - new to home machining. Cheers

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would be very wary of buying Banggood collets. The sets that have been reviewed were shit.
      I bought most of my ER32 collets and chucks from CTC Tools online store and they are excellent. That was some time ago.
      The thing that you must look for when buying is that they are made to a DIN or ISO standard. If they don't state that then don't buy.
      A lot of the BG stuff doesn't state a standard so anything goes.
      I review their stuff but I call a spade a spade, so choose wisely.
      I see they sell individual collets in the standard blue and yellow boxes, but once again how good are they ?
      Look for a DIN rating and you should be reasonably sure of getting quality.
      Cheers Rob
