  • On this week’s episode on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, we are joined by former Wales captain and Premier League footballer turned coach Craig Bellamy.
Craig takes on Gary at the Cube in Manchester before a fascinating sit-down interview.
Having clocked up over 500 professional appearances and represented nine clubs over a career that spanned almost 20 years, Bellamy does not lack in stories to tell.
Find out how much of a big influence legendary boss Bobby Robson was at Newcastle United before an acrimonious fall-out with Graeme Souness led to a St James Park departure.
Hear the full anecdote on his infamous Golf attack at Liverpool and which other member of the squad was involved in a separate incident on the same night. Bellamy also reveals where he was told to look for another club under Rafa Benitez.
Craig reveals his own mental health battles from childhood through to career injuries and the impact of losing a close friend and former-team mate Gary Speed.
Finally, we talk about how the Cardiff-born man has ventured into coaching through his love of the tactical side of the game and how he won’t be changing his philosophy any time soon.

What a wonderfully, candid, open and free interviewee Craig was. This only comes with shared knowledge of how the game has been over the past 20 years.
RIP Gary Speed. None of his playing allegiances sat with me but I hope his wonderful spirit is at, and will remain, at peace.

Just got half way through the Michael Owen interview on WillHill. Had to turn it off because all he did was talk about how perfect he was and how he never did anything wrong, criticising others for their mistakes.
Then the difference in this interview with Craig is night and day. What an honest humble man he's become, fascinating, inspiring and brave.

One of the best Interviews Gary has done.... Almost everything Craig said struck a chord with me - listening to him and understanding his inner hatred for himself made me really reflect. Almost like I know the solution for him, but I can't accept it for myself! Bellamy is such an engaging fella. His comment about being different and not belonging..... Jeez - I know that one! Mad thing is.... Most people would think i'm uber confident and on point, but i'm anything but that and Craig's the same! I know most days are still a battle for him! Just keep going lad :)

What a fascinating interview ...... I always liked Craig when many were often negative about him. It's about understanding the people around you and giving them the time and attention i.e the respect required in getting to understand them. Being misunderstood so often himself Graig has brilliantly used the resulting frustrations as a force for good. He has unselfishly turned personal negatives and potential negative outcomes into collective positives. It sounds simple because it is but in reality and in day to day practice it's a highly advanced way to behave and operate. Respect.

One of the most refreshingly honest interviews I’ve seen from a footballer. Kudos to Craig. Glad he’s still thriving and learning. That’s the lesson kids need. Iwan Roberts' autobiography mentions how he was nicknamed "Best in Club", because even if he had no talent in a different sport, he had to always get the best kit. Always with the bravado and swagger, clearly masking a lot of the issues he's had.

Bellamy was a great player at NUFC but was right to move on at the time. I think you can see he has matured greatly and takes accountability for what he did wrong and also understands the favours he was done by people like Sir Bobby. Great to hear how much he has clearly grown up. Wish him well.

    Great interview
To me, Craig Bellamy is one of the legends of the premier league
One thing about this interview, and hopefully you do it with interviews going forward, I feel you should have talked about his whole career
As a City fan, I was disappointed you didn't go into his time at City
He was incredible for us and I know I was devastated when he left
Skill, finishing, electric pace, hard work... he was everything City needed in a player...
He even did an interview back in the day, if I'm not mistaken, where he said he hoped he'd finish his career at City. Again, was gutted to see him leave my club.
Hopefully you do a part 2 like you joked about or just in general, ask players about their whole careers because this is great viewing and it would have been even better with the full career delved into.
    Cheers

never liked him as player & we all have our misconceptions of what ppl are like on & off the pitch & you hear the stories but i thought it was very inlighting that he was going through mental issues without realising it ,reconised them ,owned up to them & trying to work through it & got more of an understanding of things hes done & said in his past that hes come to terms with & on reflection alot of it was on him ,found it very inciteful & honest

Fair play to Craig he not once blamed anyone else for his own bad life decisions/actions, totally owned each and every one of them. A decent footballer on his day to be fair and should have achieved more. Young footballers could learn a lot from this interview imo.

Great interview, very open and honest. Real shame there wasn't the support in place for mental health back then, I'm sure a lot of players would have had better careers or at least a better understanding of themselves. Good to see Bellamy has found ways to manage his overactive thoughts and depression clouds, very relateable

natural replacement for Larsson. Gutted the board didnt get him was only 6 million and 40k a week and he wanted to stay but unfortunately we had quite a bit of debt at the time and were already looking to move on high earners like Sutton, Hartson and Thommo. Thing is if he had signed him for 6 we would have ended up selling him for 12 so daft move on the board.

Goal at Ibrox was a stunning strike. Put the big Greek fella on his arse. Genuinely thought he was Henrik’s replacement. Usual penny pinching by the board

    • @dahsellsavon113
      @dahsellsavon113 ปีที่แล้ว

@JohnBhoy-ue4fk still watch that goal every now and then. Aye the board did penny pinch but to be fair we were in like 30 million of debt to the royal bank of Scotland at the time. Had 4 or 5 players on 40k a week back then wasn't far off what the top earners at English clubs were getting
