Ok even though Chinese is syllable timed our favorite accent coach tells us we can lengthen the tone for emphasis. Other ways to indicate emphasis include: SPEAKING LOUDER -- or pausing between syllables? Syllable timed doesn't mean gap timed, right?
Interestingly we do this a bit in English too, particularly when talking to someone we think is being a bit “dense!” Try it: “SO… I just ASKED you: would you like TEA or COFFEE.”
