I heard this when it first came out, I know I’m old! Lol! But it helped me to not feel so isolated when I was so very young. I identified with the gender-bending character, whose mother didn’t know if they were a boy or a girl and it felt good as if I was being seen for who I really was. I loved David Bowie!

This song, every time i hear it now, it brings about a fond memory of when i introduced a couple of my uncultured classmates to the wonders of Bowie. It was the day after it was in the news that he had passed and i was in year 8 English saying to no-one in particular, "Man, i can't believe David Bowie's really gone." Two girls next to me said, "Who's he?" and i stared at them in horror and dismay. So while the teacher is aimlessly writing on the board, I take out my headphones and play this and Starman for the both of them. An hour later, in art class i hear one of the girls humming, "Rebel rebel, your face is a mess..." Needless to say, i could not have been more smug in that moment - THEY'RE HOOKED🤩🤩🤩
