SO I just turned 30 when this song came out, im 48 now and the scary thing is, this song feels like it was made yesterday. I remember I had not long left my hometown to find my own way in life, but I didn't last long, I soon returned the the place I call home, and I have been there ever since, though now everything is changing once again, my father passed away just 2 weeks ago and for some reason this song is the song I have turned to, no idea why, and its not making me an emotional mess or anything, but it reminds me why I left and why I returned, and no matter where we all end up, there is no place like home, the place you feel safe and secure.

I was thirteen when i listened this gem for the first time. I am italian and in that period i didn't undesrtand these legendaries words. Now i think that the message of this song is full of poetry, me too, i am not pro with humans but with nature. I hope Nature will rebel herself and will reduce all this toxicity.

There are two mistakes in the lyrics for the hook
1. It's "Big city life, me try fi get by" - The hook is in Caribbean Creole (Singer is from St. Vincent), where "fi" simply means "to" - "I try to get by"
2. "And right now Babylon de(y) 'pon me case" - Babylon is a word that is used to refer to the state, and often to their agents, i.e. the police. He's saying that "Babylon, they upon me case", meaning the police is on his tracks, probably due to petty crimes he had to commit just to survive, aka "fi get by"
I always thought it was "Babylon dep on me case" for the same reason (dep being short for department, ie police)

Our time system we have today with 12/24h 60min/sec and 8 working hours each day for an example. We lived in nature for maybe several 100k years and suddenly we start build cities out of nowhere.. We are not supposed to live the big city life, IMO.

I lost so much over the last couple of years, repeated lockdowns fucked me financially, I lost a brother and best mate to brain cancer and couldn't attend the funeral, I haven't seen my dad who's 72 for 3 years, my cousin lost his father and couldn't attend the spreading of uncle Marks ashes, about to file bankruptcy, dealing with an assault charge with potential 2 years in prison, and now my wife's going blind, I have court in the morning and I heard this and I just cried.

Don't let all of these disturbing thoughts prevent you from discovering the fact that you are probably stronger than millions of people out there since many people haven't lived throught the challenges that you lived through. Always remember that there are small things in life like that can carry you through these hard times. I hope that you will life a beautiful and happy life one day and that most of your problems are solved by then.
