I’d say it was both Mel B and Geri but like Simon Cowell said a few times, Mel B was the unsung hero of the group and I agree. The rest got way more recognition than she did, she brought so much to the group that was always overlooked
@@ritaalber3505 There wasn't a leader in the Spice Girls and who knows it better than the girls themselves (even though they motioned to Mel B, perhaps unconsciously implying that she was unofficially the leader 😂). There wouldn't be the Spice Girls without "The Spice Girls", they wouldn't have made it without each other. Anyway, always Mel B once said in an interview about the subject, that all of them were leaders in different departments. She said that she was the leader as she took a lot of decisions about the group and was also the choreographer, she also said that Mel C was the disciplinarian and leader of the group vocal wise and was the boss in that department and that Ginger was very vocal about certain things related to the group. Finally, Posh was somehow the financial "advisor" as she seemed to be quite versed on the matter.

When "Wannabe" was released on the radio, nobody saw either the video or faces of the girls and yet the song became instantly a radio and chart hit. I also bought it without even knowing who they were. Then I found out that Mel B sang most of the Solo parts and Mel C was the main vocal in the chorus. "Wannabe" gave them international fame. The following releases (SYBT, 2B1 etc etc) cemented their status. The "Girl Power" thing didn't have to do with that whatsoever but was a fun motto, wasn't it? It was brought up in the music industry by a female band in early 90's and later borrowed by the Spice Girls in the second half of the 90's. There's an entire paragraph dedicated to that on the SG page. There wouldn't be the group without the FIVE Spice Girls.
