You are the man! Set it up the first time, both local and outside users can log-in. Before this, I never even knew what IIS is. I never even knew where to find it on my PC. LOL! I got it sorted!!! Not long after I posted this!! The server wasn't pointing at the right home directory - so it couldn't find the resource. Thanks for your input though!!!
I have a problem with CCTV too. The thing is im working in an big Hotel and there is a special camera which opens ramp over car license plates... This type of camera is storing on its own SD card and I want to make it store on the computer it is connected ? Can I do it the same way as in this video ? Can you help, thanks

Pretty fabulous job, so easy to understand and follow. ...For convenience, I'll note/remind here that selecting "no SSL" 3:34 and turning off Windows firewall 5:11 are two steps depicted which people should NOT apply to their own setup.
In order to use an FTP name the FTP host must be named, you must be able to resolve DNS on your network, if you want to hit it from outside your LAN you must enable port triggering enter the IP address and service ports into the router and you must know the outside IP address of your home/office. If you use regualar internet service your public IP changes so either pay for a static IP address so it never changes. Also, you should use SFTP over FTP it is much more secure. If it were me I'd use WINSCP software for the server, very easy to set up.

When I try to connect from my external Ip Address, I get a 'error connection refused'. I have tried and tried, and read up, but can not get it working properly, help would be greatly appreciated.
Either your Windows firewall is blocking outgoing port 21, your router isn't configured to port forward/NAT to your public IP address or your ISP has blocked it from their end.
Jamie Heon-Lajoie Yes, I did some research and I have Verizon fios, and it turns out they blocked ftp for "safety reasons" a few years back, you you can pay to add a service to enable ftp... hah, thank you for answering :)
@@tylers1219 In my neck of the woods, I doubt any ISP could get away with that. So many people run a small business from home that any ISP who tried to restrict port access in that way and then tried to charge for allowing access would either be boycotted or sued into oblivion.

Even I faced few problems regarding it, I just used filezilla server, it also same as this one, there you can provide a default account name "user" for default access and with no password, this is what I tried at my home! Ask if further help for ftp server using filezilla is needed! :)
AKevin Thomas: Just go to Administrative tools->Internet Information Services(IIS)-> Click on FTP server which you have created -> FTP Authentication -> Enable the status I think you will not face the same problem again!

This the the best of all the ftp setup tutorials I have seen or read.My Camera supports shooting N uploading directly to an FTP Server but it was a pain trying 2 figure it out. I had no clue how 2 set it up on my computer or how FTP really work and the instruction manual sucks. It instructed me to go to the network properties and change to a static ip and a whole bunch of other crap that made me lose my internet connection. Kudos to you It works now . I subscribed.

I followed all the instructions and I could successfully access my FTP site internally (from within my network). I however COULDN'T access my FTP site using the external IP address. However, a friend who is located at a remote location COULD. So, that shows that for the most part it was set up properly. But, in the tutorial, it seemed that YOU accessed your FTP site 'externally' (using the external IP address) seemingly from WITHIN your network. Is that the case? You didn't explicitly say anything about this one way or another. So the question is: 1) Is it to be expected to NOT be able to access your FTP site using the external IP address from within your network? And if so, did that mean that when you demonstrated external access you pulled your tutorial machine off the local network to show this? Or if this should be able to be accomplished, what might the problem be with my setup? At this point I'm just curious as the functionality of my FTP site is fine as people located remotely can access it...just wanted to know about my own results done locally. One last question: 2) In the 'Authentication and Authorization Information' dialog, when you choose a 'Specified User', that definitely has to be a user with a local account, correct?. Now I did have to turn the h t t p protocols on in the firewall settings and put the host bindings into the "hosts" file, plus add the bindings to the site in IIS, but after figuring that out it did work. Just don't get what I'm missing in setting up the FTP site...

I found this very useful as I'm planning on setting up a server of my own, but just a general server and not for ftp. I have Win-7 home edition and apparently it allows you to configure a small home network using a wireless router, but could be wrong.
Very useful, BUT... I can only get it to work in the "demo mode" that you configured - that is, with the "Windows private network location settings" firewall completely shut off. I easly connect to the ftp folder from my inner network(lan).But when I use my external ip as you did it dosent work. By the way I went into this web site that says that my 21 port is open. Also managed to configure RDP and I use it via WAN. PLEASE HELP!

Miguel, thanks for the tutorial. everything is set according to your instructions, but it is not allowing me to connect. The local logging brings up the ftp prompt but after I put in username and password it does not go to site??
There is more uses then just the internet, FTP servers also come in handy for Machine Centres, Robotic Machines etc.. Many CNC machines have moved to eithernet sockets, a massive advancement over the old RS232C serial conection.

For both, USB and Bluetooth it's not recognising and has some issues with drivers. Then I have dig out the option in files on my iOS to connect to the FTP server! I was running FTP server back then in Amiga days so I was thinking if Windows has that stuff already available. And it has! Thanks for the video, now I can send long videos I record for my channel and skip Google Drive! For some reason the destination folder on the another disk partition wasn't selected so I was able to browse the whole C: drive (perhaps because the user created is an admin?) but this is a detail. I think I narrowed down my problem. When trying with firefox I at least get an error. Something going on with ssl. I will look at my settings for that and configure a little differently.
Hi Miguel - Thank you very much for this - an extremely helpful and clear presetation and at a very good pace. I am having trouble right at the end though. I can access my FTP site from within the LAN but not outside. IE displays the normal 404 error and Windows explorer says that an error occurred when opening that file. As far as I know I have forwarded the ports on my Netgear DGN2200 in 'Firewall Rules'. I can also access the FTP site via an online FTP tester. Any ideas?

hi..good tutorial. problem is i can't connect using the external IP in the last step to check that it truly works. i can connect using my local ip, set up my router as instructed. tried both port 21 and 800 as some suggest. all cases i can get it to connect with my external IP. gives me a Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at xx.xxx.xxx.xx:800 *The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. *If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. *If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. I've turned off the firewall as suggested during the video during the test. Any ideas?

As others have said, even if port 21 is open for private and public FTP on WIndows 7 Firewall your process only works if Windows Firewall is turned off. Any ideas, please. Also in the program I am using to send FTP files (images from a CCTV camera) what is the FTP" server name"? I have tried using ftp://192.168.1.n (local address) but it will not accept the colon or slashes. I have created the Windows FTP site called "camera" but can't use "ftp.camera" as the user name? I'd like to be able to set my port to something in the thousands range, for example, 63223, or 27256. I heard this is what port forwarding does, but I'm pretty incompetent when it comes to netowkring and the like.

Hello Sir , here is my question: I did everthing you explained on this video. I disabled my firwall, configured ftp via IIS as you did, and also I have opened port 21 in my router. I easly connect to the ftp folder from my inner network(lan).But when I use my external ip as you did it dosent work. By the way I went into this web site that says that my 21 port is open. Also managed to configure RDP and I use it via WAN. PLEASE HELP!
The FTP works only if you have the windows firewall off and no SSL?

Miguel, thanks for the tutorial. everything is set according to your instructions, but it is not allowing me to connect. The local logging brings up the ftp prompt but after I put in username and password it does not go to site??
There is more uses then just the internet, FTP servers also come in handy for Machine Centres, Robotic Machines etc.. Many CNC machines have moved to eithernet sockets, a massive advancement over the old RS232C serial conection.

Thanks a lot, much appreciated! For some reason my iOS 15 (on iPhone XR) cannot connect with my trusty & oldie Win 7. For both, USB and Bluetooth it's not recognising and has some issues with drivers. Then I have dig out the option in files on my iOS to connect to the FTP server! I was running FTP server back then in Amiga days so I was thinking if Windows has that stuff already available. And it has! Thanks for the video, now I can send long videos I record for my channel and skip Google Drive! For some reason the destination folder on the another disk partition wasn't selected so I was able to browse the whole C: drive (perhaps because the user created is an admin?) but this is a detail. Your video was recorded 10 years ago (!) but still VERY useful. Thanks a lot!

I think I narrowed down my problem. When trying with firefox I at least get an error. Something going on with ssl. I will look at my settings for that and configure a little differently.

Hi Miguel - Thank you very much for this - an extremely helpful and clear presetation and at a very good pace. I am having trouble right at the end though. I can access my FTP site from within the LAN but not outside. IE displays the normal 404 error and Windows explorer says that an error occurred when opening that file. As far as I know I have forwarded the ports on my Netgear DGN2200 in 'Firewall Rules'. I can also access the FTP site via an online FTP tester. Any ideas?

hi..good tutorial. problem is i can't connect using the external IP in the last step to check that it truly works. i can connect using my local ip, set up my router as instructed. tried both port 21 and 800 as some suggest. all cases i can get it to connect with my external IP.

i setup my host computer as per the steps you taught, but when i am trying to access the ftp server in another computer, the username and password is invalid. how could that be? do i have to make any setup on the other computer i am going to access the ftp server? thanks

As others have said, even if port 21 is open for private and public FTP on WIndows 7 Firewall your process only works if Windows Firewall is turned off. Any ideas, please.
Also in the program I am using to send FTP files (images from a CCTV camera) what is the FTP" server name"? I have tried using ftp://192.168.1.n (local address) but it will not accept the colon or slashes. I have created the Windows FTP site called "camera" but can't use "ftp.camera" as the user name?
