That is what this video is all about. My settings are not the end all be all. They are simply a good starting point for anyone who isn't sure where to start. The changes you made are definitely good choices. You won't be disappointed.
Just bought a LX7 and read quite a few tutorials - this one is excellent in getting the camera set up for better shooting. I have also replaced the standard lens cap as suggested - thanks, very useful
Probably the best starting video for for new owners of the Panasonic DMC-LX7, great tutorial on settings to start getting the best pictures right out of the box for beginners.
So glad I found this video because I wasn't taking advantage of many of the finer settings you illustrated here. Far far better than the PDF download guide.
I am in love my LX7 also since I bought it right when it came out. I find it has a sort of classic touch. I recently bought the LVF-2 viewfinder which I also use frequently. Even in 2021 it is something special compared to all these modern gear which seldom have soul.
You are my hero. I received my LX7 from Amazon..this camera is nothing short of amazing. you have been extreemly helpful with the settings. I am looking forwar getting some pretty nice pictures. TY
Thank you for teaching us how to set the settings on this camera. I bought it knowing all the great reviews but haven't taken advantage of this camera. With the new settings, i can see a BIG difference. So thanks again.
That is a very good point. I now setup C1 with single shot mode for all indoor pictures and pictures with the flash. I also setup C2 with burst mode for all outdoor and non-flash action pictures.
Still the best tips around for the LX-7. I own several of these incl. the underwater housing by Nauticam. All my LX-7 are set up with these tips. After haveing made changes in the settings I returned to these here back - the author knows, what he recommends. Many thanks for this really helpful video!
Very good video for improved photography. I've had my lx7 for a couple of years and have been frustrated with the inconsistent shots in iA mode..now I know why. Thanks for that tip alone! I haven't looked yet, but I hope there's another video for a C2 setting that's different, but useful for most people.
i have a big fat manual and i got more from this 7 minute video than from the whole manual - thanks a million!! i was ready to retire this camera for lack of use... due to lack of understanding why the photos have looked so sh*tty. thanks a ton!!! yes, well done! great video!!
love this camera. it died (humidity will kill the motor). bought a second one and appreciate this tutorial. bought the lens cap the second time around. been using the live view finder always..worth it if you are a photographer. shoots great in manual mode, too.
Good Question. These settings will work outdoors as well. However, I have discovered that using the burst mode disables the flash. Now I setup C1 as single shot for indoors where I might need to use the flash. Then I use the exact same settings in burst mode for C2. That way I can switch back and forth between the indoor and outdoor settings.
You are awesome. I just made the purchase thru Amazon. I was torn between the LX7 or the Leica DLux 5 or 6. I think I made the right choice. We are going to Balloon Fest in New Mexico. I cannot wait to capture those beautiful balloons in digital. This was a great way to get a Leica lense for little money. Thank you I think my wife and I will love this camera..Kudos for the info
Very nice video - its helped me a lot in setting up my LX7. I do have one question though. I can not figure out how to activate the flash. I want to only use it as a "fill flash". I know I have to manually raise the flash - but even then it never goes off. WTF ???
Well, wish I'd seen this earlier, because B&H just had it on sale for $299 last week. It said $349 on the website, but in your cart it had an extra $50 off. It also had a bundle option to add Lightroom 4 for $60 which wasn't something I was shopping for, but for the price ($90 off retail) I figured why not? Eventually (if not by now) I'm sure it'll support the LX7's RAW format too. Just keep checking every now and then and you'll find it like I did.
The noise control does move to - 2 on my camera. However the ISO extended is not an option apparently unless something is set in stone on my camera. Nice video review - I learned some things!
Yes they are good general settings. You can use 1/60th or 1/120th for minimum shutter speed depending on how much light you have. If you are outdoors then 1/125th is probably fine. Indoors probably 1/60th would be best. I setup C1 and C2 with those options and just switch back and forth when I go inside and outside.
I really enjoyed your tutorial - thank you very much for your effort to share the knowledge. I love this camera, and I've convinced a few of my friends to get it too and of course to follow your instructions. Too bad that Panasonic will most likely not continue with the LX series, so get this camera while supply lasts.
this is a great post. Thank you so much. I have set all but one option, I cannot access the "i.Dynamic". It is defaulted to "off" so the menu skips over it therefore not allowing me to change that setting. I have fumbled through the menus and cannot figure out how to activate that option. Please advise. thanks!
I believe that was on Amazon a few weeks ago. The price on it fluctuates very steeply. Just keep checking around and you will see it back below $300 soon enough.
Thanks for making this, it's very valuable. I got an auto-lenscap on your recommendation and it's nifty but makes the camera too big for the case I'd been using. Do you have any recommendations for a new case?
I'm a Location Scout and found your video very informative. I use the your settings for most of my available light indoor shots. Do you have any other reco's for custom settings?
Are you saving your files in RAW format? Perhaps thats the issue. I had a similar problem a few days ago when I was taking pictures at night. I kept getting a slash across my flash icon as well.
Nice video. Can you make a comment about the LX7's size? I've been trying to decide between the LX7 and the Canon S110. Reason I'm pushing towards the Canon is because it's small. If I can't put it in my pocket then there's no point. I already have a GH2 and will soon have a GH3 that will be carried in bags. I don't want to have to carry the LX7 in a bag as well. The low light performance is so tempting though!!
Thank you! I just ordered this camera for a 3 month trip to Europe! Are these good "general" settings? I want to stay away from using Auto mode, but I just wanted to make sure that these settings are good for all conditions. Thanks!!
Thank you for posting such a great video. I just purchased the LX7 and I found your video extremely helpful. Do you have any advice on how to attach a filter - I bought a UV haze filter to protect the lens. I also bought the auto cap you recommended. Do I need to remove the auto cap to attach the filter? Do I need to use a filter adaptor as well? Thanks!
Coming in rather late here. I have an LX3 and am considering adding an LX7. What was the reason for setting the resolution to "Low"? As you were changing the settings I fully expected you to pick "High".
hey sir! this is the best video ive seen for this camera! very informative!! thank you. i had a question about focus.. for general shots, of people and scenery, should it be on 23 area focus or one of the other ones? say i switch over to shooting people, how important is it for me to pick "face detection". thanks!! keep up the good work
Great video, love my lx7. It's deffinately the best camera fit the $. I've tested all of the best advanced point and shoot cameras and eventually committed to the lx7. I also just bought the fuji xe1 and will be buying the gh3 . Thanks for the great advice and realy hope you can make more videos on the lx7. Thanks
thank you so much. I was able to follow most of this. My camera only goes to 7.5 - I see your display says 9M. Why would that be different? Also - I can't seem to find the burst mode setting that you talk about. Plus - what should the EV be set at?
This video was outstanding. This is my third Lumix camera and by far the most versatile. Have you used a polarizing filter on this camera? If so, how does it mount to the retracting lens?
great video, thanks for all the info. I'm useless with cameras, question. You said this were the best setting for indoor low light photos, what about outdoors?
thx bro. i used most of these settings. i just tweaked it a little to my tastes. ie. i shoot avchd cause i don't mind the format, and raw mode cause i love lightroom. my gh3 comes in today. definitely going to rewatch that video.
Love the time you put into this, but I'm really having a hard time following what you're doing. It'd be helpful to mention what buttons you're pushing a little more often. You explain it like I already know how to use all the Menu buttons.
Thanks for the great tips. But $270? Wow, would love to know where. Cheapest I could find now (june) is $376+ on Amazon...I guess the good reviews caused prices to firm?
very good video, the LX7 is my first good digital camera.until a few years ago i was using my old Nikon and film for canoe trip photos. as you seem to really know your way around the LX i have a question about the slow motion settings.i did look around the web but have not found a good answer. on the few try's with slow motion i get choppy results.i want to get videos of rapids but my results so far end up with bits of foam jumping along rather than smooth like the fellow on the climbing wall.
where do you find this model that cheaply? i've been looking for it at an affordable price but never found any... links would be greatly appreciated ;)
Does the i.zoom function work in movie mode? If so, do you know if at max zoom it would be like ETC mode on the GH2, just using the center pixels of the sensor and not using interpolation? I can't find any info on this anywhere. Thank you!
nice video sir! anyway, i have a problem..I can't change the iso limit set to 3200 in my LX7 the word ISO LIMIT SET on the menu has no light,so i can't able to change it.. why is that do you have any idea sir?? thanks for the response sir..
Great video! Thanks for those creative aps too. Now the One Million question: With the appearance of the Lumix Dmc LF-1...Is the latter a better invest for the money! I'm talking IQ here. Thanks!
I need a compact for traveling, taking photos of people, buildings, cars especially and filming. Would the LX7 be the best choice ? What else can I buy in the price range that is also good. As in good I mean best image quality and video (zoom is not important that much)
I'm a big fan of the Lumix LXn line since I got an LX3. When the LX5 came out I got it and then the LX7. I've traveled with them extensively and haven't been disappointed in the least. The WA is great, you can add a .7 converter to any of them by way of an adapter tube or even the accessory filter ring of the LX7, although the current crop of converters won't be recognized or have a menu option on the LX7, thus the barrel distortion introduced won't be corrected by the camera processor; you'll have to get that in Photoshop or Lightroom (or whatever editor you use, no plugs from me ). Also, if you use a WA converter you will have to watch your zoom, at less than 50mm equivalent there's vignetting. The LX3 wouldn't allow that with the converter option selected in the main menu but with the latter models you have to be careful. Years ago I used to go everywhere with two 35mm bodies and more than a few lenses, first SLR's and later on a pair of Leica M's. When the really competitive DSLR's came I used that but since the LX's I found out they geve me more keepers and they can still produce outstanding 11x17 prints. Just watch your ISO. In any case, I never used more than 400 speed film The LX7 is also a superb darkness conqueror with an ingenious handheld night mode that shoots a rapid burst of pics and then merges them in the camera producing astounding HDRs that just look natural. It's also great for extreme macros withh the meager addition of a +2 diopter and the 37mm filter ring, now available from other manufacturers than Panasonic. One must for me is the eye level finder and the one for the LX7 albeit not cheap is the best accessory I've found for it. My "system" bag is a small one that is no larger than my hand in the largest dimension and it holds as much as I used to cram in a reporter style bag. No more back aches! I wonder if you ever got the camera as your post is kiind of dated now but I thought I'd leave this either for you or anyone harboring with the same doubts. You can see a few of my LX images in my FB albums. There's also a fine LX3-LX5-LX7 page there. Lots of fine examples.
Stefan Grotegut Highly! The LX7 sensor size is 7.44x5.58mm (aka 1/1.7"), the maximum pixel count is 10.1MP. The LX100 on the other side is 4.3X the size of the LX7 and has a maximum pixel count of 13MP. The LX100 has an integrated EVF, on the LX7 it is an accessory costing upwards of $200. The LX100 has a native (base) ISO speed of 200 vs the native speed of the LX7 of just 80. = 2.4 boost in sensitivity. The LX100 has physical dials and rings for aperture, shutter speed, focus and exposure compensation. The LX100 boasts a superb manual focus aid which the LX7 lacks. Do yourself a favor and check the DPReview articles on both cameras: www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx100 www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx7 Although I've traveled with all the LX series since the LX3 onwards, the 100 is a rival for larger cameras like the APS-C Fujifilm X-E2 which I also own. Between the latter and the LX100, I would choose the LX100 for its size.
nice video - thanks. I do have the Sony RX100 which is very nice - but price on LX7 now $290 so tempting as a backup - Range not quite as good 90mm vs 100 - 3x smaller sensor - Res on LCD not as high - and not as nice art filters - and needs a lens cap, although I could get that self closing cap. I do have the GX1 and the GX7 and do like the Panasonic menu layout and buttons. Of course what counters the RX100 sensor is the nice and fast lens - F1.4-2.3 - vs F1.8-4.9 - so zoomed the RX100 is nothing to brag about and it hits the slower speeds rather quick. I find my Fuji X20 do quite well in low light for a small camera as it has a bit bigger sensor then the LX7 but it also has a faster lens F2.0-2.8 - So my biggest concern is really ISO performance / low light performance - I would assume the Sony RX100 sensor is a bit better as it is also newer besides size.
I'm not sure why, but I don't even have an option in the menu for Program Diagram. It skips from extended ISO to face recognition. And I'm accessing it from manual mode. Also, my flash will not fire not matter what I do. When popped up, the icon has a slash through it. I bought my camera used in Like New condition from Amazon but I'm thinking about returning it.
Great set up guide, and right on about the auto function being useless on the otherwise excellent LX7. HOWEVER, when you make these settings, you will turn on burst shooting which will disable internal flash. the bottom button on the multifunction buttons gets you to burst shooting options where you select SINGLE, when you want to use the internal flash. This messed me up quite a bit. Also, the electronic finder is the best money you will ever spend. Great for almost all shooting.
I love this camera.. After previously having a panasonic, and looking at the new Sony etc, I kept coming back to this, even after seeing demo's at various stores.. Hands down it is the perfect combination of a full blown DSLR and a Compact.. Just make sure to get the lens cap that opens auotmatically..
LX7 best for the money - fast lens and nice menu system. Sony RX100MII/RX100 still the king of the hill in that class and no lens cap to deal with :) Fuji to release X30 soon with at least 1 inch sensor to compete with RX100MII - however not quite pocket-able like LX7 and RX100MII - but you are right LX7 a good deal - Also the Panasonic GX1 at $239 body - nice little M43 camera as well - Lumix has great menus and Fn's on their bodies
could I ask that when making a video and naming the camera you give the Varied names it has elswhere.. For example my evry day cam is TZ31 in Germany but TZ30 in Uk o idea what in USA . It get so confusing ...... please Have no idea wh camera firms do this ...Have you ?
Hello! Does anyone knows wich type of shutter got the Lx7? Is leaf shutter or mechanical? Also got electronic shutter? How laud it is? Im searching a second body but I do street photo 90% of the time and I need a quiet camera for candid moments. If anyone knows or got an Lx7 I'll appreciate your answers :)
I wish I had seen this video before being my Lumix, I got the model DMC-ZS50. I can't find a comparable video for that camera. I tried to approximate the suggested setting and it didn't turn out too well. I couldn't use the auto flash in the burst mode (and the flash was firing way too much), there was no noise reduction or program diagram setting and I wonder if there is a white balance setting I should be using. I would appreciate advice from anyone. Many thanks.
Great video - thank you so much! You presented it extremely well - and the content was also great. Just changed the settings following your suggestions.
It doesn't really fit into a typical pocket. It might if you are a really big fatso with a massive ass and wear really big pants. If not, that shouldn't dissuade you from buying this excellent camera.
That is what this video is all about. My settings are not the end all be all. They are simply a good starting point for anyone who isn't sure where to start. The changes you made are definitely good choices. You won't be disappointed.
This is the most thorough and most useful LX7 video of them all. Outstanding production and no wasted talk or content. The best.
I've had my LX7 for 2 years and didn't know half of this! Great video, thanks.
Just acquired an lx7 and this video is extremely helpful! Thanks...
TY
One of the greatest compact cameras indeed! Thank you for this video, I'm completely amazed!
That price is just amazing. This is definitely the best compact camera I have ever used.
Excellent. Very well done. I wish all videos on photography were done to the same quality. Hope this person presents more videos on the LX7.
Just bought my LX7 for $399 in Toronto. so happy with this camera and it manual control for different video modes.
thanks for all the set up info, save me loads of time
Best video on the LX-7 setup. My gratitude to you.

Just got an LX7 … It's never too late!
Very good video for improved photography. I've had my lx7 for a couple of years and have been frustrated with the inconsistent shots in iA mode..now I know why. Thanks for that tip alone! I haven't looked yet, but I hope there's another video for a C2 setting that's different, but useful for most people.
Probably the best review and most helpful review I have watched, thank you
i have a big fat manual and i got more from this 7 minute video than from the whole manual - thanks a million!! i was ready to retire this camera for lack of use... due to lack of understanding why the photos have looked so sh*tty. thanks a ton!!! yes, well done! great video!!

Comprehensive and quite useful guide. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Why don't I have the Program Diagram feature? Thanks for the video, I'm trying to know my camera better.
Great info. Thanks. I think I will buy the LX7. Looks like a lot of fun to use. Love the built in ND filter and fast lens.
Thank you
THANK YOU MAN NOW I CAN USE MY LX7 TO ITS FULLIST POTENTIAL GREAT VIDEO

definitely is a big help for any body own this camera include myself, I'm looking forward to see other video how to take night video. thanks so much.
Very nice video, good job. Just waiting to get my camera soon and try all settings from that video
great video bro. i bought one during the holiday sales
Hi, the video files in AVCHD mode are in the common directory: PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/ . I think it's pretty easy to find them.
Agree. Why don't you take a few pic with different options? Great vid!

Greatest little digital camera ever made.
Thanks for making this, it's very valuable.
I got an auto-lenscap on your recommendation and it's nifty but makes the camera too big for the case I'd been using. Do you have any recommendations for a new case?

Hi, what about "bulb"? If I buy the Electronic View Finder can I still you a flash on the hot shoe? What if I want to use an F22 Aperture Setting?
Nice video. Can you make a comment about the LX7's size?
I've been trying to decide between the LX7 and the Canon S110. Reason I'm pushing towards the Canon is because it's small. If I can't put it in my pocket then there's no point. Face Detection works very well if there is only one face in the frame. I use it a lot. For everything else I use the sport focus.

Do a reset on the camera. Just look in the manual and there is a function in the menus to reset everything back to the way it came from the factory.

can you tell me why my i dynamic is grayed out great video by the way
You can reset the camera to factory settings by going into the menu. Select [reset] from the setup menu and it will reset everything.
Great video! Thanks for those creative aps too. Now the One Million question:

Also, if you use a WA converter you will have to watch your zoom, at less than 50mm equivalent there's vignetting. The LX3 wouldn't allow that with the converter option selected in the main menu but with the latter models you have to be careful.
Years ago I used to go everywhere with two 35mm bodies and more than a few lenses, first SLR's and later on a pair of Leica M's. When the really competitive DSLR's came I used that but since the LX's I found out they geve me more keepers and they can still produce outstanding 11x17 prints. Just watch your ISO. In any case, I never used more than 400 speed film
The LX7 is also a superb darkness conqueror with an ingenious handheld night mode that shoots a rapid burst of pics and then merges them in the camera producing astounding HDRs that just look natural.
Using an LX100 now. It's incremental and evolutive.
+Jorge M. Treviño How much better is the LX100 over the LX7?
Stefan Grotegut
Highly!
Do yourself a favor and check the DPReview articles on both cameras: www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx100

Although I've traveled with all the LX series since the LX3 onwards, the 100 is a rival for larger cameras like the APS-C Fujifilm X-E2 which I also own. Between the latter and the LX100, I would choose the LX100 for its size.

PS, I missed the video issue. There's simply no comparison there. The LX100 is king of the hill!
nice video - thanks. I do have the Sony RX100 which is very nice - but price on LX7 now $290 so tempting as a backup - Range not quite as good 90mm vs 100 -
3x smaller sensor - Res on LCD not as high - and not as nice art filters - and needs a lens cap, although I could get that self closing cap.
I find my Fuji X20 do quite well in low light for a small camera as it has a bit bigger sensor then the LX7 but it also has a faster lens F2.0-2.8 -
So my biggest concern is really ISO performance / low light performance - I would assume the Sony RX100 sensor is a bit better as it is also newer besides size.
At 2:00 into the video it shows how to adjust the burst mode. The first option on the top menu is the single shot mode that will enable the flash.
thanks for the response! is that only available in P or M or the like? under those, i only see AF Tracking, 23 area, 1 area, and face detection.
So I'm getting a "lumix error (zoom)" message and the zoom does not retract when I use the close switch. Any ideas? It was working fine. Thanx
Good one , very educational.
Hi.
How can you make 120fps video? Mine makes 100Fps. Its not bad of course, but if its possible to achieve 120, why not?
Thanks!
Great video!
Great for almost all shooting.
any chance you could help me setup the time lapse settings? Thanks in advance
Sony RX100MII/RX100 still the king of the hill in that class and no lens cap to deal with :)
Fuji to release X30 soon with at least 1 inch sensor to compete with RX100MII - however not quite pocket-able like LX7 and RX100MII - but you are right LX7 a good deal - Also the Panasonic GX1 at $239 body - nice little M43 camera as well - Lumix has great menus and Fn's on their bodies
Very informative. Thanks for posting!
I'm trying to follow your settings but ISO Limit Set option is dim. Do you know why? Thanks!!
I experienced this problem too
I'm now having the SAME problem, but before it was FINE.
I like your bit about the knowledge (or lack of) of ND filters...LOL
could I ask that when making a video and naming the camera you give the Varied names it has elswhere.. For example my evry day cam is TZ31 in Germany but TZ30 in Uk
o idea what in USA .
OK, I am convinced. Where might it be on sale? ;)
Just changed the settings following your suggestions.
where did you found it 270$ ?
there a variety of modes that the flash is disabled in... including burst mode... when you take 2,5 or 11 shots per second
Thanks for your help most appreciated
I really want to see a video of how well this camera fits into a pants pocket.
It doesn't fit in a pants pocket. Really almost no decent camera does. It will fit in a jacket pocket though.
Actually, mine fits in my pants pocket albeit with a large uncomfortable bulge.
It doesn't really fit into a typical pocket. It might if you are a really big fatso with a massive ass and wear really big pants. If not, that shouldn't dissuade you from buying this excellent camera.
