Well, Australia's petrol price is about the same (Au$2 per litre is about US$5 per US gallon), but we do not have freedom of speech or religion. We're fairly free about what we can say (getting less though), but, for example, our constitution specifically says that if a religious practice and a law contradict, the law must trump.
