    I started reloading shotshells in 1978, even before I started metallic reloading. Believe me when I tell you that there is just as much "knowledge" out there about shotshell reloading as there is metallic. I've reloaded probably in excess of 10K rounds of combined 12 gauge and 28 gauge, and I have a MEC machine set up for each, that never gets changed over anymore. Skeet and trap competitors tend to pick a single hull type, like Winchester AA, which is a one piece hull with an 8-point crimp, then find a load that they like, and just stay with that for years. They buy their components en masse, and their powder by the jug, get their press set up so that it loads that one load perfectly, and get to loading. It's nothing for a trap or skeet shooter to shoot eight or ten rounds of practice on a non-match weekend (200-250 rounds).
    Recently, I've been shooting CAS, and buying the cheapest target or light game loads I could, because for a long time, it was cheaper than reloading, because of the cost of shot. That is no longer the case, and I'm going to order some shot and go back to reloading. And in cowboy shooting, the targets are just knock-down plates at 5 yards, and a 1 ounce load at low velocity will do that just fine. But in trap and skeet, you have to find a load that will pattern well, and move out at medium velocity, because the targets are moving away from you as you shoot. And the variables in loading, such as component volume, wad seating pressure, and the quality of the fold crimp, all affect how well the load patterns. The reason competition loads used 8-point crimps was (at least in the past) was because the crimp was more consistent when done on manual machines, like a MEC, and laid flatter. Most heavy loads, like duck and goose loads, use a 6-point crimp, because that makes more plastic available in the center of the crimp for the plastic to be fused together with heat, to make the shells weather-tight. Reloaded shells are always going to have a bit of a "rattle" in the shot cup of the wad, because most people don't add a buffer material into the load to stop it from happening. It's just an extra expense, and not really necessary for practice rounds. At matches, you are required to use factory loads.

    I got one of those russian roll crimp tools, and a 7/8oz lee key drive slug mold. Took straight, loaded target loads, trimmed crimp, dump shot, insert slug, and roll crimp. Very low recoil, taking a 1-1/8oz target and swapping in 7/8 oz slug. No idea what kinda velocity it's getting.

    I see your point about why you would roll crimp, small batches, odd oal. That’s not something that I worried about shooting mass volumes. Do you want everything the same and consistent, and easy to do.

  • @psykoklown874
    @psykoklown874 ปีที่แล้ว

    My MEC Jr pretty much sits on the shelf since I started roll crimping. The press has adjustments, but it goes out the window if your shot column is out of spec for how it's set up.
    I have 3 different roll crimpers and they all crimp differently as far as flatness as well as taper. The cheap one is from Forest Camping (Russian). It's 1 piece with 3 ramps instead of pins (~$17 on Amazon) I don't recommend it. The 4 pin crimper is nicest, BUT the 1 pin BPI had more taper...and yes, the end is flat. To get crazy, one could use the BPI in a GAEP fashion to add a finished taper to the 4 pin, but that's an extra step because the more aggressive taper should've been added to the 4 pin crimper (my only gripe against it). GAEP (Italian) makes a finishing crimp for fold crimps (works kinda like a roll crimper). They make nice stuff, but it's pricey.
    If I recall correctly I was told by BPI that pressure is down ~500 psi with a roll crimp, but it all works out in the end as far as I'm concerned since I mainly load slugs and some buckshot.
    They make plastic OS cards. They'll hold up to moisture but won't provide a watertight seal.

    👍😊 I smiled at the end of the testing. Your quick step back inside reminded me of a few cold mornings I've had in the past !!! Anyway, extreme cold will impact battery life and function. Always, and it doesn't matter what they are made of - lead, nickel, lithium, dry cell, etc. Your dimming Red Dot simply was too cold! Also, short shotgun shells might not feed properly from the magazine. Haven't used one, but there's an adapter made that's supposed to fix the feeding. Reportedly, it does a good job. I just plan on single feeding any short shells I end up with, but that might be something you want to look at. 👍

    As a sporting clays shooter, I load between 500-1000 rounds a month, all on a single stage MEC 600 press. For that reason only, I stick to the folded crimps, at least for those type loads.
    I am however very interested in this video series for many of the same reasons you are. I'm looking at doing some hunting using tss shot and am always interested in alternative methods if I were to be in a situation where I didn't have my press or needed to work with a shorter case.

    There's a bit of a divide, considering shotshell reloading for trap/dove/rabbit/squirrel loads (which I've done a lot of, & they're all star crimped) to what would work best for on fewer shells purpose loaded for turkey (or maybe even waterfowl). All of the TSS shells that I've purchased recently have been roll crimped.
    I'm looking forward to your tests comparing the two, & thanks for this video series.
    Merry Christmas

    @ExF1Guy ปีที่แล้ว

    JRB/Shannon, try running your roll crimper backwards. Running it CCW means that the pin is going in the correct direction to pull hull material inwards. Running it CW pushes hull material out, increasing the amount of effort required to crimp and resulting in lower quality roll crimps.
    This is an issue because the pin is offset to the wrong side.

    If you really want to get specifics on pressures, Precision Reloading does pressure testing. I reload 16 ga for an older side by side and pressure matters for that particular model. The variation in pressure can be pretty significant and may not always present itself in velocities

    Btw roll crimps should run a bit lower pressure and be more consistent.
    Also the slower burning powder issue is generally just due to the bad overall consistency from shotgun primers (vs say rifle stuff) and that it’s such a low pressure round

    Love the video as always! You talking about the sound of the shots and listening to them reminded me of something pretty cool you should try sometime. If you have two identical pistols, shoot them one in each hand, together at the same time. 1-2-3-4-5 shots. You must pull the triggers on both guns at the exact same time. The sound of the shots gets deeper in tone with every shot. I don't know if it's necessary for the pistols to be identical or if they need to be the same caliber but I've always used a pair of M&P9s. I have no idea why this happens but it is something cool to show to your buddies.

  • @CharlesButler-kj2pd
    @CharlesButler-kj2pd ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm more a waterfowler than turkey guy. Slow burning is what you have to use for heavy loads. Fast powder will develop a faster peak pressure, so while you can deal with making fast powder fire a heavy load, it will have less gas, and lower velocity while having an acceptable peak pressure. So if you think you can kill your game with subsonic velocity using (as an example) bullseye, fast powder can work. Your odd sounding loads are a sign of variability in powder burn. You will find a larger SD if you can get reliable chronographing on loads. (Labradar does not work on shotgun for me anyhow, oheler does.) Experimentally for me, and it was part of the old BPI information, single base powders seem to ignite a bit more reliably and burn a bit more consistently in cold weather. Long way around getting to saying you will find better stability with cold weather using single base powders compared to the double based ones in roughly the same burn rate. I miss SR 4756 for shotgun... The same happens up here in the frozen north with rifle and handgun, but some powders are known for better stability in that context with cold/heat. You might be surprized if you chrono some of your good loads out there in the sub zero weather just how different they are.
