    Hey everyone! It's Rudi from the future 😊I'm going to be filming a retired JET Program Q&A so if you have any unanswered questions please post them here and I will address them in the next video! Thanks!!!!!

    I'm old enough to be your father. I know this because I have a daughter about your age. I was a JET in 1993 and it was fun to hear about your experiences. I was thinking how different it must be now. Back in '93 there was no Skype or FaceTime, and you couldn't just put in a SIM card and call home. Calling home was a huge deal. And communicating with the Japanese people without knowing the language. Wow was that hard. Now I just talk into my phone, hit the translate button and let the other person read it. Plus there are Google Maps. So different! Anyway, good for you. What an experience you are having!

    • @tudinail

      VeeDubJohn hey thanks! I feel very lucky that technology has helped maintain contact with everyone at home. That must have been difficult back in 93!

    As I research the JET program I hear the term every situation is different a lot. That being said, a lot of people have primarily shared the positive aspects of their experience. Your video revealed a lot of challenges that might be faced, so I appreciate the fresh perspective and I'm glad you overall ended up having a positive experience that you were able to grow from.

    • @tudinail
      @tudinail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree that a lot of JETs share similar positive experiences that make the journey amazing and worthwhile. It's so important to recognize the balance of positive and negative that inevitably happens due to the transient nature of moving to a foreign country and many other life changes in general. Thank you for watching and for your support!

  • @gregh8989
    @gregh8989 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I'm on the shortlist for this year and have been driving myself crazy with worry. Your honesty about your struggles with loneliness and homesickness have helped me realise this is an eventuality, not a possibility, and will make it easier for me to prepare. So thank you so much!

    That was soo insightful and in-depth, I appreciate you taking the time to make this video and share your experience. Im sorry to hear that the adjustment was rough initially, I follow a couple of other JETS and the workload and tasks really do seem to vary but seeing as you were in such a prime location really close to Osaka (one of my favorite places in Japan) my mind completely blocked out the fact that your out there working a really demanding job with a steep learning curve not to mention the culture shock and seclusion that comes with it. Through it all I feel you've accomplished the goal and pushed yourself harder than you probably expected initially. Now that things are finally winding down you can enjoy Japan the way that we all unrealistically imagined you did year round lol. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

    • @tudinail
      @tudinail  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ramz thank you so much for your comment! I was kind of nervous to share this video hoping it wouldn’t come off as me complaining or anything and I’m glad it’s being received well. For this upcoming school year, I’m going to have 15 classes a week instead of 17 because at the end of last year I finally spoke up and asked my supervisor if there was anyway they could reduce my schedule even by one class (forgot to mention in the video). Your support means so much to me!

    Another JET ALT from 1993 here! For sure every JET's situation is different -- that sounds like a really stressful situation that you landed in. Even back in 1993 they talked about "the honeymoon phase" and the funk that people get into around contract renewal time. It's too bad that you didn't reach out for help sooner, but it still sounds like you grew a lot over the course of your year in Japan. I'm sure making this video was very theraputic. If anyone asks me about the JET program I'll tell them to watch this video (and some others), but this seems like a really honest account of your experience.

    • @tudinail
      @tudinail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just getting around to your comment now - apologies it took so long! I definitely cherish all of the ups and downs and things I learned along the way. And you're definitely spot on that sharing my experience was therapeutic and I'm grateful for the community of people that gave me encouraging words of advice back when I lived there. Being on the JET program leaves a lot of time for self reflection as I'm sure many other JETs have experienced. It's something we should take time to as a lifelong practice!

    I feel you when you said that you didn't feel comfortable to reach out to others. I did that, and nobody cared. People here don't care and think it's a problem if you complain about anything

    Teaching that many classes alone - without training (?) - sounds crazy. Was the school short-staffed? You met that challenge head-on and you should be damn proud of that.

    • @tudinail
      @tudinail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! No, they weren't short staffed. I personally think the teachers got used to having an ALT around for so many years that they would just slack off and expect the ALT to do all of the work. I was not ok with that since that wasn't what I was hired to do. The job title is ASSISTANT language teacher.

  • @chilesheloved

    Don't isolate yourself. There are people who have been through what you might be facing right now and they overcame it. Don't push people away, surround yourself with people who are spiritually mature and get the help that you need. Isolation when you are in pain and don't know if there's a way out is dangerous and that's why we have suicide cases. Listen, there's nothing that you can be facing that God is not able to solve for with God nothing is impossible. Hold on. Jesus loves you.

    Your video was really good. You're well managing yourself and work/life balance in Japan. Many Japanese workers as permanent staff deal with unbalanced work/life, but they don't seem to realize it, rather they tend to stress on being a member of Japanese society to work hard as others do, which is worthwhile and superior. This's a Japanese mentaliy of a collective society at Japanese business. I can image how hard it is for those who came from individualism
    countries to fit in Japanese society.

  • @moeyday
    @moeyday 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    thank you for making this video! I wanted to private message you but didn't know how haha, so I appreciate if you get the time to read this, but totally understand if you can't (with all the work you have)! I've been watching your JET program journey since the start and I actually applied and was accepted this year but just had to make the decision last week not to go this year due to family-related circumstances. after watching this i feel better about my decision, because I realized how much time commitment it can actually be and how difficult it can be at times and i think i would've been too conflicted with things back home to fully immerse myself there. I've spent a lot of time abroad but working full-time in a foreign country is super different.
    I'm subscribed so if you ever get the chance to, it would be really helpful to hear some tips about working through the long distance relationship! I follow a lot of other JETs but your situation sounds really similar to mine, and I'm hoping to still apply next year (hopefully if I get accepted) I would definitely have my boyfriend and mom visit me as well. So any tips on all of that would be awesome. Best of luck and enjoy the rest of your time there! Thank you for sharing this!

    • @tudinail
      @tudinail  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey!! Thanks so much! Congrats on getting accepted even though you decided to opt-out. I'm really happy that I made the decision to come, but looking back on it, I didn't think about it at all when I first got accepted. Like I just said yes and didn't consider how hard it would be to be away from fam/friends/bf, which is why I faced a lot of the challenges I did later on. So also congrats on deciding NOT to go and doing what's best for you personally! It really takes a special kind of person to be that honest with yourself.
      As for the long-distance stuff, it's still a work in process... lol. It will never be perfect or easy to do - something I've accepted over time. But thanks for sharing your interest and I'll definitely try to organize some of my thoughts into a video.
      By the way, I hope everything works itself out with your family and best wishes!! ttyl :)

      @moeyday 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TUDI ahh thank you for your quick reply!! Haha tbh I never thought I wouldn't go until certain things made me stop and think about it seriously but I'm still feeling pretty sad like I'm giving up a great opportunity but I'm holding onto hope that I could still go next year or later (but things always change so ya never know!) Hoping I can still spend time brushing up on Japanese and maybe get my TEFL so I'll have some experience which might make it easier going in.
      If you don't mind me asking what JLPT level are u taking? I wanted to teach high school on JET if I could and heard that less Japanese language means maybe more chances for high school but really have no idea hahah
      Thank you for your kind wishes! Everything will be fine I'm sure I just want to be around to spend time with certain people in these circumstances! Excited to keep hearing updates about your journey though, and I'm glad you're starting to figure out the balance and all :) !

      Hey! I was at about a beginner/intermediate level then... I had just finished studying Genki II (knew around 300 kanji) in university but I didn't have a lot of practice with daily convo. Now I am about a solid intermediate level and can get by in almost any daily situation where Japanese is used. However, conversation is still always a struggle for me! I loved your video your honesty was so refreshing, I am looking to apply within the next two years when I get my bachelor's but I was just curious about getting accepted I am going to take Japanese when I transfer to a University but my fear and I know this sounds dumb is that I have tattoos on my arms that are visible I'm scared they won't accept me if I have those I've tried looking at maybe a policy about it somewhere but I haven't been able to find anything. Thank you and sorry for rambling 😅

    • @Kakashi-Usagi

      Brittany Barrett Hey! I’ve lived in Japan for a year as part of my Japanese degree at Edinburgh University. I graduated in July and have just had an interview to teach English in Japan through JET. They did ask on my application if I had tattoos and I told them how many and where. I have many on my left arm (wolf at the top, stuff around my wrist and a new edition of an elephant on my forearm. On my other arm near the joint I have an orange fox which I got in Japan!) I think so long as you are respectful and keep them covered for any interviews or the start of work you’re fine. I studied a lot about the taboo of tattoos in Japan but all Japanese people I met loved my tattoos. I went to an Onsen which accepted tattoos. I even had an old lady come up to me in the street and look at my arm, asking how much my tattoos were then asking where I was from and just chatting a bit. I would say when applying to teach there just keep them covered but once you’re there you may be ok to have them on show if it’s hot for example. Just check with the teachers :)

    Hi! I just turned in my short-list confirmation for JET and one of the biggest worries I have is about my relationship with my boyfriend. I mean, knock on wood *knocks wood*, I believe my bf and I will be ok since we've been together for 7 years now...however I'm really scared about not being able to communicate with him whenever I want to because of the time difference. What kind of advice do you have about maintaining contact with your significant other? And what are some ways you two stay connected in a long-LONG distance relationship?
    There are plenty of JET experience videos but I find yours to be the most relatable to me (as of right now I'm just taking one year at a time...not planning to stay long). Thank you for the rundown of your year with JET so far! It's really helpful :)

      I was talking about this with my coworker today. My coworker’s friend was in a 6-year long relationship, she went to Japan, her boyfriend couldn’t take it anymore, they broke up, the friend met a Japanese man, got married and still in Japan. I don’t mean to sound negative, and it really all depends on whether your significant other is okay with a long distance relationship, but generally long distance relationships don’t last beyond one year..as far as I know.

I was just writing to ask if you would be willing to further discuss your experience in having a long distance relationship for a year? My boyfriend of three years was just accepted into JET and will be leaving this August. I'm honestly quite worried about how this is going to unfold once he's actually gone and we're on opposite sides of the planet with a major time difference and everything. I'm also worried because of how expensive it will be to visit him and how I'll realistically be able to afford it. I've sought advice all over the place, but you seem to be very open and honest, specifically about the JET Program. Thanks and I hope to hear/see something :)

      Pleymox i was just at a snake cafe and cat cafe just last month!! There are little clips of them in my last two videos 😍 I wish I could get a cat to have around my apartment but it’s too small here I’d feel bad keeping it all cooped up

    来日した途端に電気と水道を入れるのに自分で全部責任取って誰にも頼らず出来る訳がないです。国際交流員ですら一人で全部やりこなせない人もいるのですから担当者と相談して助けて貰うのは当たり前のことです。

    It would be fascinating to hear an experience from an ugly person as well. I can't help but think a pretty girl like Tudi has had a much more social and welcoming experience than say someone who is not as good looking - it would be really interesting to compare.

      Tabby D Then I guess you should make a video.. rather than dismiss someone’s experience because of the way they look. Super lame

      Tabby D YOU reread it. You made no comment on anything she said in her video, only commenting that you’d rather someone ugly make a video about it instead. That’s the definition of dismissing an experience, genius. Why don’t you make a video and then you’re fulfilling your own desire.

    • @ChrisDoesTV
      @ChrisDoesTV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seanjarvis2931 No, I said it woud be "fascinating to hear" and contrast their experience with hers.
      You cannot make a contrast if you dismiss her experience - genius.
      Re-read and stop trying to be a saviour she clearly does not need.
      The only person dismissing things right now is you.

    To the person reading this, you are who God says you are. You are made in the image of God, The Creator of heaven and earth. Because of His love for you and I, He sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die for you so that you can have everlasting life and not go to hell. Jesus Christ arose from the dead, He is alive and is the only Messiah, the King of kings, the Beginning and the End. Jesus Christ is the Savior of the whole world. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, invite Him into your heart/life today. Wherever you are, He can hear you for He is everywhere. Remember Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to God the Father. Jesus loves you sooooo much so that He gave His life for you. You are valuable...You are loved.

      Yes, they paid for our flights. The salary is listed on the JET Program website. I forget exactly but it was around $23,000 USD per year.

      @@sandrizz1e Yes, Japan is absolutely beautiful. I studied abroad there before going on the JET Program so I knew what to expect. The food and culture are different from the US but I prefer them which is why I felt more accepted in Japan. I was never concerned about safety - it's very safe. You can walk around alone at night as a woman and never feel uncomfortable. Even the cops don't carry guns it's that safe. And no transportation is provided - I walked to and from work and other people i knew took the train or bus.
