Renewable Energy 101: How Does Biomass Energy Work?

    The great thing about biomass energy (or simply “bioenergy”) is that its sources are plant and animal waste. So not only does biomass energy divert this organic matter from the waste stream - it turns it into something we all need, without polluting the planet. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, by 2030, the U.S. has the potential to sustainably produce 1 billion tons of bioenergy each year. As far as renewable energy sources go, biomass is not the most glamorous. But, biomass energy successfully solves two major environmental problems at once - an incredible feat if there ever was one!
    Transcript:
    Renewable Energy 101
    Biomass … the original renewable energy. It's been part of our lives since our ancestors learned to control fire. In fact, it's made possible by the sun, whose energy is absorbed by trees and plants through photosynthesis and then released when organic matter is burned or decomposes.
    First, there's plant waste. Wood scraps, sawdust and crop waste can be collected from farms or manufacturers. The waste is burned to heat water. The hot water creates steam. The pressure of the steam spins a turbine. The turbine powers a generator. The generator creates electricity. Simple, really!
    Next up: animal waste … also known as “the problem of cow poop.” The solution? Waste from farm animals can be collected in a large tank, called a digester, filled with bacteria that eats the waste and converts it to methane gas. The methane is captured and burned to heat water and create steam. Sound familiar? Second verse, same as the first.
    This same principle can also be used to capture methane - a potent greenhouse gas with 25 times the heat-trapping ability of carbon dioxide - from landfills. Once a section of the landfill is closed off, pipes are run from the waste to collect the gas, which can then be burned to make electricity or heat. Biomass may not be the prettiest form of renewable energy, and it needs to be used carefully and thoughtfully to protect the ecosystems that prevent greenhouse gas emissions, but it can be a smart way to make use of waste. Power to the poop!

      Too bad it isn't true... In reality, they mow down forests and truck the trees to the biomass generation plant, burning 30 tons of trees a day... No wonder our lumber prices have gone through the roof. Trees are a great way to sequester carbon since they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen back to the air. This is perfect, right up until you burn the tree, and BOOM, all that carbon is released back into the environment. How is this clean energy? Lies, lies and more lies.

    While it is certainly a method to produce electricity by not letting matter go to waste, it is not as clean and innocent as people think. Simply because burning something always causes pollution to some extent. Furthermore the potency (amount of MegaWatts) that can be produced this way is much less than ordinary methods. On top of that, the mass isn't always "waste", healthy trees get chopped down to supply these biomass plants as well.

      They are sustainable methods,
      The trees naturally give off their dead wood annually. A full gown tree at 20 years consumes 1100 pounds of co2 per year. From age 20-70 that's 1100 pounds per year. And every year they shed dead wood limbs that are not needed. Each tree species is slightly different actually.
      The dead wood and brush on the forest floor use to be better managed to prevent forest fires. In recent year's we have watch the finding go to other places. Each year's the forest floor get worse and worse. Tinder piles reach pyrolysis in the driest months of the summer and spontaneously combust.
      If we could organize sustainable maintenance and burn in EPA approved systems there is little to no biproducts going into the air.
      The system know how triple phase combustion technology. The fine particulate that you normally see coming from a smoke stack is no more. The particulates are re-burned first through smoke tubes and then a catalytic device. You are able to harness the energy from the sun and filter out the particulate matter. The neighbors can tell I heat my home with wood. You can see smoke come out of my chimney, it looks just like a gas vent.

    How about storing energy from Biomass to a battery like a lithium-ion battery or a lithium-sulfur battery or even a battery from Biomass?

  • @chrissharp5011
    @chrissharp5011 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    By the definition of biomass energy given in this video, doesn't this include FOSSIL FUELS? Oil, coal and gas were once living matter that captured CO2 from the atmosphere. The only difference is that it happened much longer ago, and so this biomass has had more time (and physical pressure under which it was trapped) to change into the various forms that are demonised (by some people, at least) today. Or am I missing something?

    • @sanaachaudhry817
      @sanaachaudhry817 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know it's been a year but I can kinda answer this lol. You got the main difference, it's not what biomass vs fossil fuels are made out of but how they are made. Fossil fuels take thousands of years to form under heat and pressure and is not considered renewable because we are using it at a faster rate than it can be replenished. Whereas biomass is our current organic waste as is and since everyone produces some form of waste it is considered renewable because it can be replenished at a rate faster than what we are using it as.

    • @oriontigley5089
      @oriontigley5089 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the key difference between fossil fuels and biomass burning is that by using biomass, we are not releasing dormant carbon back into the carbon cycle.
      When we burn biomass off products, that is carbon that's already part of the carbon cycle anyways, and would release it's carbon even if we didn't burn it. It's true that burning biomass is still harmful as it accelerates global warming, and thus it cannot be the main fossil fuel, but it is less harmful than using fossil fuels because so long as we don't burn coal and oil, that carbon remains trapped and doesn't influence the carbon cycle.

    Biomass power plants produce more CO2 per megawatt hour than coal. The CO2 is released immediately, it takes decades to regrow the trees to take up CO2.These biomass plants are not just using "waste", they are removing & burning old growth, irreplaceable forest.

    • @beastysped3270
      @beastysped3270 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are only burning dead trees which could take years too fall making the "decades to regrow the trees to take up CO2" even longer. Biomass plants quicken that process by burning down the dead trees and either replacing them with crops or more trees. Burning trees releases the same amount of C02 as letting them decompose naturally, so technically yes Biomass plants produce more carbon then coal but all that C02 that they do release would be released anyway in the future, ie when the trees decompose. So not only do they get to clear dead parts of forest to make way for new trees which will take in C02, they also get to make energy from the dead trees without adding any more C02.

    • @beastysped3270
      @beastysped3270 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@fredxxxxx Trees take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into biomass and when they die, it is released back into the atmosphere. Whether trees are burned or whether they decompose naturally, they release the same amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The idea is that if trees harvested as biomass are replanted as fast as the wood is burned, new trees take up the carbon produced by the combustion, the carbon cycle theoretically remains in balance, and no extra carbon is added to the atmospheric balance sheet. There is more then enough, from timber companies to dead parts of forests. A lot of biomass comes from dead trees, not even a toddler is dumb enough to think that burning full grown green alive trees is "green"

    • @fredxxxxx
      @fredxxxxx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beastysped3270 Your theory is completely wrong. When trees die they decompose into the ground, they don't release CO2 until they are burned as coal ... where do you think coal comes from? When a tree is cut down to burn in a power plant a new tree should be planted I agree but it takes time for that tree to grow and a sapling can't absorb very much CO2. As for dead wood being burned I have never heard of anyone going around picking up the dead trees to fuel a power plant. Unfortunately the idea that you can have an eco friendly woodland where you can chop down a tree but hey, that's ok, I'll just plant another one and it's all equal doesn't work in practice. This video is pure propaganda by the power plant owners.
