He is watching everyone try to be something they are not. (Everyone is fake.) He runs away and finds himself to be down to earth. (He finds happiness and comfort in the simplicity of life in love with someone having a child.) He runs back to show everyone he can be just as good as they are. (This is the way the world is. Everyone wants to be someone and wants to appear as if they are special.) He sees what really matters at the end of the video. Not to mention the judges, which are really just everyone around us judging us on a daily basis. It doesn't matter who we are or what we want to be. He realized true happiness was something greater than being selfish. At least that's what I'm getting...
@@davidvanbakergem1674 I would say he was torn because he became confident and found himself later in life. He looks at his kid and realizes he is getting older. He missed out and didn't live the life he wanted before he became a father so he sacrificed his family for the experience.
The meaning of the video was pretty straightforward to me. The fact that his dream family faded away in the end clearly highlighted a final point. That by copying the dancers before him to make the judges happy, he sacrificed his own personal happiness. The larger meaning is that it's perfectly fine to be original and not always listen to what society tells us to do. He says 'The more I listen, the deeper I sink'. Deep stuff.
Not what I got from it, seemed to me to be the choice of what to pursue whether to chase his dreams (the talent contest) or focus on love/relationship/family. Then the switch points to how fickle we are as humans and how the grass is always greener.
I took an acting class in Austin a couple of years ago, improv to be exact. I'll never forget what the instructor told us on day one, never be afraid to take risks, be bold, take chances and never shy away from an opportunity. Two months ago I got a part in my colleges play, for my audition, I showed up and had nothing to planned. Needless to say I went on that stage and improvised. Now I have a leading role in that very play.
Amazing metaphor for the smoke and mirrors of the entertainment industry. He is hyping himself up for the proverbial talent show, seeing the inauthentic nature of the stunts the other competitor's are using to win. He rejects it and runs out into the wilderness, connects to his basic need for food and shelter. Finds a woman and falls in love. Even her simple facial features represent the simple lifestyle that he now lives. But watching her and his son dance together triggers something within him and his need to perform and share his art with the world. He runs back knowing that in order to "win" and be a "successful artist" he is going to have to play the game i.e use all of the stunts the other participants used to gain approval. And while it is fake, and he is fully aware of it, he is telling us that he is willing to play the game. Rejecting the potential meager and simple life offered to him by his hypothetical wife and child in the wild, he choses to perform and play for us. Amazing that this is the music video for a popular song that was in an Ikea commercial, a real life manifestation of him playing the game to gain notoriety and success. Beautiful and self aware piece of art
There is an assumption that he "falls in love" This is not there - there is no factual evidence. Remove that aspect and you'll go further with your understanding of what's happened. Not all relationships are based on love. Notice she is the only women he's seen; he hasn't seen anyone for quite a while, etc.
This band has produced some amazing, impressive music. Awesome voice, great lyrics (imo), and they have some genius melodies. Most of the songs on their first album were amazing. Electric guest is a gift to mankind. Can't wait to hear more of their stuff
the best songs are the hardest to get. I spent all week searching for this song until now and im loving every second of the song. For instance the beat, the dancing and i dunno about him leaving his mini family, but love the song
As awesome as the whole metaphor for acceptance and fear of failure as the whole desert scene is, my favorite part is still the "special effects" during the talent show portions. Brilliantly done!
I remember seeing this music video for the first time on MTV as a preteen I fell in love with the sound instantly but haven’t heard it in literally a decade and recently found it again i was searching and only knew the piano keys in the beginning 😭 this song is sucha masterpiece

basically, what this means is that he was doubting himself and his abilities because of other people telling him he couldn't be good enough and could never attain his dreams. they're wrong though, but he can't accept that and that's what stops him from making his dreams come true. so he runs off and he marries and has a child but it's that child that makes him remember his dreams again and he tries to go and get his dreams but it's too late; he can't have his dream without crushing another of his.

This is truly one of the most insightful and yet disturbing videos out there. Watch it again...when you get older you can see more of what it's trying to tell you.
Look at how nervous he is before going on stage at the beginning of the video. I think the video was about him conquering his stage fright, but when he ran away he stayed so long he started a family. Then remembered why he ran and went back and killed it on stage. He doesn't look so happy with his choices at the end, which goes with the lyrics. IMHO
Khadidiatou Cissé this song and video are both amazing. i have heard it in a french movie today and i have reseacherd it. since i have found it i can't stop listening the song again and again.

great song, great album. I found the video astonishing. Seems the portrait of the artist who has, implicitly at least, to give up on family and a standard life to pursue his own carrier. "Forget about our mothers and our friends, We're fated to pretend", as MGMT sang. Nonetheless, he didn't create a family in one night, but he probably lived that movie in his own mind in those seconds prior to the exibition, minutes of stage-fright. What happened? Is it like... he got cold feet for a second, wanted to go back and be a regular guy with a family where no one bothers him, then he realized he has to chase his dream while he still has a chance so he ran back, then he succeeded and now understands that he has to sacrifice things like family and a simpler life in order to make it as a star? Or am I missing something?
FINALLY I found this song. This was my favorite song 11 years ago as a teenager and I remember it used to make me so happy. And now it‘s still as good as I remember and reminds me of simple times. Finding it again even though I couldn’t remember the title nor the lyrics really made my day 🎉
BIG Thank You to IKEA - I'm 58 Years YOUNG & have LOVED Northern Soul since 1971 & Motown ALL My Life - Like "xxMelabi" I to thought this BRILLIANT Song was sung by a Black Female, What a Surprise! LOVE IT! :)
One could interpret the boy as any common man or woman facing the fear of acceptance in society. The fear causes this person to flee from the trial he or she should be undergoing and the woman and son symbolize the possibility of choosing to run. By going back to the audition, the boy gives up, in essence, any future of a scenario where he and the girl end up together in order to overcome his fear of acceptance.
he also may be giving up on a way of life that would have been more in accordance with himself, and less with society's expectations.. at least that's what his expression at the end makes me think
Or he just has an awesome jacket, and that's all we need to know because overthinking everything is the reason we're scarred and thinking of how not be scared, then trying to blah and blah blah
And all that time I thought It was pharrel Williams singing. I love the metaphor for the video. Great song, thanks ikea but I'm still not buying none of your furniture

Well, in terms of reality, the music video talks about a boy accepting himself, and the others around him. The audition was a metaphor for his fear, the judges was his acceptance, and the woman and baby girl are his hope, as seen judged at the end. It may be confusing at first, but you'll get it.
You'd better thank IKEA! Man, this song is the ish. However, I had this preconceived notion that the singer was a black female. Surprised but impressed nonetheless.
I'm one of those that came here because of the Ikea advert. I normally hate those people, now I'm one of them. Nevertheless it's a great track and a fab video.
I have 3+ years trying to find this song.
My life is now complete.
lol! same. first heard it on the movie remake of Annie 2014. finally found it!

IMHO

I think that's pretty much it.
I think it's supposed to be hilarious.
FINALLY I found this song. This was my favorite song 11 years ago as a teenager and I remember it used to make me so happy. And now it‘s still as good as I remember and reminds me of simple times.
Finding it again even though I couldn’t remember the title nor the lyrics really made my day 🎉
Saaaaame I listened to a song by electric youth called a real hero, immediatelyyyyy thought of this dope band.
BIG Thank You to IKEA - I'm 58 Years YOUNG & have LOVED Northern Soul since 1971 & Motown ALL My Life - Like "xxMelabi" I to thought this BRILLIANT Song was sung by a Black Female, What a Surprise! LOVE IT! :)
Wtf the fuck I just wanted to hear the music! Did not see any of that coming
Or he just has an awesome jacket, and that's all we need to know because overthinking everything is the reason we're scarred and thinking of how not be scared, then trying to blah and blah blah
ahahah what the fuck just happened in the desert?!?!! i knew the song but never saw the video wtf !!!
Thank you Dylan for introducing me to this song
this is brilliance ..I'm blown away
I finally found it. .-.
Stay in drugs, don't do school.
Eat your school, stay in drugs and don't do vegetables
W's! W's all around!
That's the message I got out of it anyway.
Heard it before mr square face.
Searched "Electric Guest" and Portugal. The Man came up I'm guessing because "Feel It Still" kinda sounds like this right?
The lead singer helped write Feel It Still.
Wicked tune and entertaining video, also found it after hearing it on the Ford and Ikea ads.
This is the most confusing music video I have ever watched. I love it!
And all that time I thought It was pharrel Williams singing. I love the metaphor for the video. Great song, thanks ikea but I'm still not buying none of your furniture
double negative - good luck with your ikea stuff

They call me a little grown up
See, I'm upset because I've always been stuck
But I don't know what it is I'm without
Guess I'm in love with always feeling down
(See the problem was I)
I was fully consumed
By all of the petty things that I couldn't do
All of the plastic, products, shows, and woes
But I didn't ever show, I let it go
So I listen while I'm told
Sit back, don't think
Get high, take drink
Sit back, don't think
The more I listen, the deeper I sink and
Ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
This head that I hold, oh, it's so tired
And I say, oh, no, I go higher
And I say, ooh,
What's it gon', what's it gonna be?
Make me say, ooh,
What's it gon', what's it gonna be?
I'm feelin' so cold,
What they want, what they want from me
Make me say ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (they want, they gonna be)
So find me stuck in some scene
I wanna get out but there's no in-between
So I sit back as I watch the crowd go
Never assuming that I've sunken so low
See the answer is this
If I wanna be free
I gotta stop playin' round and runnin' from me
'Cause all of the plastic, products, shows, and woes
They got my head feelin' low, no room to grow
So I listen while I'm told
Sit back, don't think
Get high, take drink
Don't feel, just go
If you listen carefully, then you won't feel so low
Sit back, don't think
The more I listen, the deeper I sink and
Ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
This head that I hold, no, it's so tired
And I say, oh, no, I go higher
And I say, ooh,
What's it gon', what's it gonna be?
Make me say, ooh,
What's it gon', what's it gonna be?
I'm feelin' so cold,
What they want, what they want from me?
Make me say ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (they want, they gonna be)
I'm sinking, ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
Get no sleep, meet the vampire
And I say, ooh, no, I go higher
And I say, ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
This head that I hold, no, it's so tired
And I say, ooh, no, I go higher
Is that from something?
Well, in terms of reality, the music video talks about a boy accepting himself, and the others around him. The audition was a metaphor for his fear, the judges was his acceptance, and the woman and baby girl are his hope, as seen judged at the end. It may be confusing at first, but you'll get it.
ive been looking for this for years !!! im so happy
Gives me chills every time I watch it
You'd better thank IKEA! Man, this song is the ish. However, I had this preconceived notion that the singer was a black female. Surprised but impressed nonetheless.
Ikea brought me here too! Great song ;-)

Been searching for this song off & on since 2012. My Life is now complete
I remember this had only like 300,000 views...glad to come back and see 3 mil!
I'm one of those that came here because of the Ikea advert. I normally hate those people, now I'm one of them. Nevertheless it's a great track and a fab video.
Oh! now I just get it..wat this vid all bout..He either wanna choose to have a family or he want to go for his career/talent
That ending is sad. Should've stuck to family.
+Mel Aran Also kinda shows how careers in the pop culture industry are fake and full of cheap gimmicks.
