So, so important for kids to learn that they are in control of their own behavior. That book about "The girl who never made mistakes" sounds like a great way to introduce the concept of learning from mistakes instead of giving up!
I agree that social and emotional education is vitally important. I always had a designated time to focus on this learning. Thank you for sharing this video, and brining awareness to this topic. 😊
Such an important topic regarding students' emotional and mental standpoint in regards to the current situations. These are great actionable tips. We are currently looking at integrating more socioemotional teaching.
I think this is a great topic to integrate into student's learning during this time of the Corvid 19. I also feel strongly that Social Emotional Learning could be a great tool in supporting students social and emotional development during this time of social injustice and systemic racism. Racism has been a topic that has been neglected in our society as well as Education system for far too long. Many students of all ethnicity, believe it or not, have been emotionally effected after viewing the video of George Floyd's incident, as well as the many protests that are persisting in our streets around the world, and they do not know how to cope with it. Some don't understand why it happened or even knew that these types of things existed. Now some may say I don't deal with politics in my classroom or the age of my students are not ready for this type of subject or may feel it's the parent's responsibility to inform their children. I beg the difference because this is a society problem, it's here, the curtain has been pulled back, and it needs to be dealt with head on. Children are smarter and more perceptive than we give them credit for. They want to know what's going on, they should know how to deal with it, and we should teach them. Great presentation.
The Girl who Never Made Mistakes, oh my gosh- the first time I read this book, I cried. It usually touches my students too. I am going to use this video to help me do some of this virtually. We are virtual the first 30 days and then we will evaluate. Anyway, I think the hula hoop idea would be engaging. Now I have to think of how to do it virtually. - I'm going to figure something out. Thanks for sharing.
Ha! Your Bitmoji is so cute! As a behavioural specialist this past school year, social emotional education was a big part of what I taught students everyday. I think it's important for all teacher to incorporate more SE education in the classroom, especially dealing with the pandemic and social injustice issues all over the global. Great video Sis!! Sending love and joy to you :)
Wow!! This is excellent!! You are an awesome resource!! You have exposed me to so many wonderful ideas! I love the balloon idea! I love the " I can't/ what can I do about that" wall! Thank you so so much!!❤️❤️❤️
We share a lot of similar teaching strategies such as explaining the job of the teacher and the job of the student, team building THROUGHOUT the year not just the beginning, and having a cool down zone (I call mine the North Pole)🌻
The activity where you write down what is bothering you on the balloon is such a wonderful idea. I found this video so helpful because it made me think.
Thank you for making this video! Its important to see students as people who need to process emotions as well. Great book recommendations for young students. I like the sticky note/whiteboard idea. Its a great visual for students as they set goals for themselves. Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate Carol Dweck's "growth mindset". I use it in the classroom. I'm going to hunt down the book, "Can't do that yet". I don't have a calm down spot but I think in light of all that is happening, I think this is a great idea. I like the balloon idea too! Great tips/advice Michelle. Thank you!
This is such great information! Social Emotional learning is definitely important, especially during a time like this. I plan to incorporate the cool down corner in my class!!!
Excellent advice. We have had these feeling in our HOMESCHOOL. :) I love the idea of a calm down area (in our home). We have been using "The Young Peacemakers and Logic" which have been great in learning not just how to disagree but when to disagree and how to view a disagreement.
This was a very informative video, that is needed for our students right now. I enjoyed learning how I can address my students’ social emotional needs, with activities included. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
A friend of a friend is a teacher and these are the questions she thinks need answered before schools open. • If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2 weeks? Is their sick leave covered, paid? • If that teacher has 5 classes a day with 30 students each, do all 150 of those students need to then stay home and quarantine for 14 days? • Do all 150 of those students now have to get tested? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? • What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered? Paid? • Where is the district going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed, possibly infected students for substitute pay? • Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? • What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when? Or because of regulations are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” notices all year long? • What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out? • How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from this? The first parent of a student who brought it home? The first kid? • We are choosing to put our teachers in danger. We're not paying them more. We aren't spending anywhere near the right amount to protect them. And in turn, we are putting ourselves and our kids in danger. Please copy, paste and share.
