    For one of the most amazing Covid/quarantine videos, you might want to watch a collab between Peter Hollens and Home Free doing a U2 cover "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For". The thought of all the production work this would have taken absolutely boggles the mind.

    Basically, they were putting out a video about every two weeks during quarantine. Chance convinced them to do sea shanties for this one.
    Tim (Captain Jack) was standing in boat in a neighbor's yard and afraid to move too much.
    Listen close in the last song, and you will hear castanets being done by Adam Rupp for the first time.

    One of the most incredible and fun/happy a capella songs (which involves a surprising variety of people.. including Tim from Home Free) is an exciting VoicePlay video, JUST SING.
    You will probably be smiling through the whole thing!

    Chance, the one who started the song, is a fan of sea shanties on TikTok and brought the idea of doing one to the boys. They weren’t so sure but said ok, let’s do it. It’s a big hit for them. They did it in a TikTok style. It was during Covid so they did it individually from their own homes. They were on the NBC show the Sing Off and won in 2013 the season after Pentatonix won. The judges would give them songs to do and challenge them to change it up plus they tour constantly so they have a theatrical background because of that. Plus Austin (in red here) has a theatrical background from college. He has his own channel and sings the beautiful song Bring Him Home from the play Les Miserables. They have also collaborated with stars such as Kenny Rogers, Don McLean, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys and others so yeah they know a little bit of theatrics. Love this medley. They also have a wicked sense of humor.

  • @lisaseverance6785

    They did this for a couple reasons. 1. Chance (the first to sing) loves sea shanties. 2. The Wellerman (the first song) was huge on TikTok. Almost anyone that sang and had TikTok did a version of it. 3. Home Free has been dedicated to putting out a video every two weeks, even during quarantine with their members scattered over three states. So, Chance convinced the others that they should do this. That's is the reason for it being shot in portrait mode and the little HF logo in the corner looking like the TikTok logo. With them doing a video every 2 weeks, there are quite a few "Quarantine" videos and they are all very creative. Like I said, the guys are spread over three states (Minnesota, California and Tennessee) so to keep putting out music they all learned to to video work and they set up equipment in their homes to be able to do studio recording remotely. So their "Quarantine" videos are all very creative and fun to watch. I think the funniest has to be their song "Quarantine". Gave us all something to laugh about.

    As far as I believe this was done during quarantine. Sea shanty theme, especially the Wellerman, was a big thing on TikTok. Home Free are great. Adam Chance has done a full version of the Wellermen (the first song) with the Hound and the Fox, as well as a really scary version of the old Viking song My Mother Told Me and a really powerful version of the Johnny Cash song Hurt. The Hound and the Fox are also the video production company Fifgen, who made a lot of Home Free's videos, and appeared in them too (the young couple in Thinking Out Loud).
    Did you hear Adam making the sound of the sea? As well as laying down the beat and the sound of castanets - all at the same time.
    You asked why they did the sea shanties. Well, why not?? They do just about everything else..

    OMG... if you like theatrical, you need to further explore Voice Play! They are the third leg of the world class acapella groups (with Home Free and PTX), and often do Disney medley and songs. Sometimes in full costume and makeup. Of course, they do a lot of other stuff, too. But they kind of 'own' Disney. They did We Don't Talk About Bruno (from Encanto) and it was incredible! Other favorites are Warriors, Hoist the Colors, Little Mermaid Medley, My Mother Told Me, Bang, Carry On Wayward Son, Tennessee Whiskey, and many more...

    Yes this was done during quarantine. Adam Chance ( the first singer ) loved these old sea shanties and brought the idea of singing them to the rest of Home Free. These are older songs that sailors would sing to pass the time away at sea. The rest of Home Free was Luke warm about doing this but Chance convinced them to do it. I am glad they did, the last I looked they had over 9 million views on this. To help you to get to know them. 1st singer Adam Chance baritone goes by Chance to avoid confusion. 2n singer with the full beard is tenor Rob Lundquist. Tim Foust bass was wearing the full pirate costume. Austin Brown tenor was wearing the red outfit. Adam Rupp vocal percussionist extraordinaire was wearing the off white top. Just subbed. Home Free fans are super loyal and we follow the reactors! You will see more and more subs as you continue doing Home Free. They started putting out tons of videos from early in COVID. Start with some of the early ones, their Quarantine video, Meet in the Middle, Sunday Best, Flowers on the Wall. They were awesome and editing was crazy good especially with Meet in the Middle. Watch them for their fun humor in a more recent one Wprkin' for a Living. Butts Remix (medley/masup) and Country Fried Pop Medley is 17 songs from 15 artists that high tenor Austin mashed together! Crazy good. And Chance, baritone who started the Sea Shanty one and you liked his voice you said, he has a couple I love, upbeat and fun Some Girls Do and a tear-jerker one but incredible, Can't Outrun You. So many great ones. Recent one Unchained Melody is wow and a deep message with deep bass solo and incredible harmonies is Brothers in Arms. So many to mention and so many we love. We'll be with you on this journey! Take care.

    This was done during the "lockdown". They gave us new videos every two weeks until they went back on the road; so, yes, they're all at different places. These sea shanty songs are old "folk songs" of the crews who worked on merchant ships. I had only heard a couple of them until Home Free did this & I love it. Adam Rupp, the beat boxer/vocal percussionist/& any instruments he wants to imitate, did the castanets in part of this. These guys are incredible. Austin Brown, the high tenor, in the red costume has a degree in musical theater. They've all had formal musical training. In my opinion, the other groups are talented but there's just something special about everything Home Free does. I love your reactions to them so I hope you'll react to them more since their rabbit hole is deep & they still put out new videos about every two weeks!😊

    Home Free did a mashup of Let's Get It On and Thinking Out Loud which is a one take shot of the entire video. Tim thought it would be funny since the Marvin Gaye estate sued Ed Sheeran for the similarities between the songs. The actors that portray the couple in the video are another group, The Hound and The Fox. Chance, Tim and Rob have done multiple collaborations with them.

    • @nightthornkvala94132

      In fact Adam Chance joined The Hound + The Fox for Soon May the Wellerman Come which is the opening song for this medley. You can also see the couple (and their wee one) in Home Free's Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. That one showcases their funny side but the music never suffers for it.

    • @patriciab8876
      @patriciab8876 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I question that because the lawsuit was filed in 2016 and Home Free recorded that combo and posted on YT in early 2015. Of course, I'm sure there was talk about the similarities noticed by anyone with a good ear. (Thinking Out Loud released 2014)

  • @lisaseverance6785
    @lisaseverance6785 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Oh almost forgot to mention. They do medleys - the Butts Remix, Country Fried Pop, Fishin' in the Dark/Boondocks, Seven Bridges Road, Wagon Wheel/Song of the South just to name a few.
    Of the guys, all have had musical training of some type. In this song you can pick up a little of Rob's (beard and glasses) operatic abilities. Beatboxer Adam studied music in college, trumpet specifically (which makes sense now) Austin (red shirt/high tenor) has musical theater training and sang at Disneyland for a while in one the musical productions at the park. Tim has vocal training, had been in about three or four acapella groups in the past plus wrote and still writes music. And Chance also has vocal training. If you like Chance's voice, you should listen to "Yours" or "Cover Me Up". On a whole, Home Free is not as theatrical as Voiceplay but when they do a video with a theme ("Workin' For Livin'" has an Anchorman theme and "This is How We Roll" has a Big Lebowski theme) they pay a lot of attention to the details so that on rewatch, you spot more things than the first time or the 5th time.

    So, so versatile. I can't think of a genre they can't perform and do beautifully. The harmonies are always so stinking good, we almost take them for granted. Tim's bass just anchors everything and embellishes so well. Adam's percussion is just nuts in this, picking up the tempo with each song change driving things with authority. Did you catch Adam's castanets and wave sounds? Pretty cool.

    If you want to learn a little bit more of their background, I suggest you watch their performances on The Sing Off season 4 (like you're doing with PTX). Watch each performance separately so you can hear their backstories and what the judges have to say. They won that season, and that's when they became "popular", just like PTX. BTW, Chance, the guy you said you like his voice, was not with the band at that time. Chris Rupp, Adam Rupp's (the beatboxer's) brother was with them at that time. They are the founders of the band. That season was shorter than PTX's season, so you'll get through it in no time. It's interesting to watch, just to hear their backstory. Love your reactions!

    i have been in music in one way or another all my life and what I can tell you is that these guys are all individually talented. I first came across them when they were performing on The Sing Off, which they won handily. They aren't new to the industry and all have honed their skills in many different ways. I encourage you to do a little more research. As a lover of great music, no matter how new or old, it seems to me that you struggle with Home Free because it tears you away from your favorite A Capella group Pentatonix. As we all know, Avi left them to pursue a solo career at which he is doing quite well. Personally, Pentatonix doesn't show the range nor the chops that Home Free does. Even Adam Rupp, the Beat boxer for Home Free is world class compared to any other groups percussion ability. There is no song of Home Free that is a "bad" listen. They do covers 99% of the time, with other artists and on their own. They simply do it better than any other group without question. I will continue to watch your knowledge grow and reactions of them and their music. Enjoy!

    I would love an album of sea chanties and/or folk songs from the Home Free men. Also, I WANT A QUARANTINE ALBUM! I don't care if the songs are available other places. The pandemic was a once-in-a-century event. It was felt by everybody to some extent. Home Free kept a lot of us going with their music from quarantine. It kept me going after I got off the ventilator and out of ICU.

    Tim creates the vibrations. Notice when Adam makes castanet sounds.
    Voice Play (a cappella) does a song from Johnny Depp movie, Hoist The Colours.

    Austin studied musical theater, so he brings that vibe with him, but the others are great performers, too. They all have a great sense of humor. If you like Doo Wop style music, check out Blue Ain't Your Color and Tim's solo project, which includes a mashup of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay. Austin also has a solo channel where you can heare songs like Danny Boy, Bring Him Home, and At Last.

    Great medley. Yeah, HF likes to have fun, which makes them all the more fun to watch. Their harmonization is always spot on whether they're being a bit goofy or doing a more serious take. I love their sound and look forward to more HF reactions. :)

    If you want theatrical, react to another great a cappella band, Voice Play. A cappella fans are supportive of all of these bands. However beware of the 1% who feel they need to tear down other bands to support their favorite. These bands are all great in their own way, so it’s a matter of personal preference.

    Sea shanties are a type of collective folk song, typically performed on ships by fishermen, merchant sailors or whalers.
    They were sung not to celebrate a return home, or to chant down the pub, but to accompany the heavy, repetitive tasks of sail-hoisting and deck-scrubbing.
    Shanties were ‘work songs’, in essence, whose steady beat helped unite a shipload of sailors in one rhythm, making lighter work of arduous chores.

There's another A Capella group that is all women that are incredible too. Citizen Queen's version if Never Enough will blow your mind. They are the opening act for Pentatonix this tour.

    I happened upon a video, sort of behind the scenes kind of thing, where we got to see inside of Austin and Tim's closets. They both apparently love to play dress up when it comes to making these videos. I also loved the "Honesty" parody they did during quarantine. It is called Quarantine. Very cute.
