Liz, another step further i follow if i have had a pot heavily infested with mealy bug where it completely destroys a plant and others in the pot are effected, i tip the whole lot out and inspect the soil. Most times i have found the soil also infested with mealy bug. Then i bag up the whole soil and roots from the pot and throw it out. Then I sterilize the pot before using it again before adding fresh soil and plants.
I'd add sterilizing the soil itself before throwing it away. You fill a cooking pot with water, you place your mealybug infested pot + soil + whatever left from the plant, and let it boil for 10 minutes (actually you don't need to get to 100°C [212°F], 60°C [140°F] will do as fine, but 20-30 minutes instead). That way you get everything sterilized, and avoid spreading the plague by accident. For the survivors, I make a mix of water and soap, and I wash them in a bowl, every 5 to 7 days. Depending on how infested they were, I'd keep the treatment up to a month. I still don't get the loving mealybugs part though hahaha

Thanks so much for your help! I've just got my very first mealies since starting to buy my succulents a few months ago and I'm devastated! I've found 3 with some in them in 2 days now. My Buddha's temple, ruby necklace and another succy. I'm so afraid I've missed them after dabbing with the qtip and alcohol and then spraying the plant with alcohol 😔 I just know this was going to happen because I wasn't able to be diligent enough
I now have a new friendlier version of this video. Please WATCH the link below.
Methylated spirit is the same as Denatured Alcohol. The one I use have "95% Ethanol". This is what you have to look for. DON'T GET METHANOL.

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK thank you so much! I'm losing it because I've gotten so many succulents and plants of all kinds of the last couple months and I am freaking out that I got way in over my head. I'll check out these next videos. Thanks!
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK so do you find that you mostly get the mealy bugs on your outside plants or do you get them on your inside ones as well? I have gotten six plants in the last 48 hrs that I found with the mealy bugs but not overly infested thank God. But I had no choice but to spray with 70% isopropyl alcohol which I can see is doing a tiny bit of damage on one of the six but I'd rather take a loss of one plant or make one plant out of over 75 in my house look bad then have them all be infested. So which do you think is better? What you're using or the rubbing alcohol?
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK I just have another question. I'm not able to find the exact kind that you're using but I am seeing that denatured alcohol but it only says 99% for all I'm finding on amazon. I can't find any of 95%. Is any of that denatured alcohol going to work just as well as the one you're using?
What is methalated spirits?
In other countries it's called denatured alcohol.
I live in US an can’t find methylated spirits:( is it known by other name?
Just found out that it's called Denatured alcohol(ethanol) in USA.
meteleyted ispirit ? meron po ba dto s pinas nyan? or anu po
pede alternative ?
Denatured alcohol po ang tawag dyan sa pilipinas. 95% Proof.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hello po, from Philippines pano po kapag nasa root yung mealy bugs then uuproot po namin tapos sspray ng fungicide para mamatay yunf mealy bugs after nun pwede na siya ulit itanim? or air dry ulit?
You can air dry or plant straight away on moist soil(not wet) as long as you don't water for at least a week or when the soil dries up.
Hello po Mam Liz, is it same with isopropyl alcohol? Some succulent owner here in the Philippines used isopropyl para po maalis ang mealy bugs then same after 10minutes po need to spray water to rinse it off.. Thankful I found your channel, maraming salamat po sa mga infos I really love succulents too but I'm a beginner and one of your Subcriber😊💗
I tried Iso Alcohol once on a mealy bug. Put it on a plate. Sprayed it with Isocol...when it dried up...it started crawling again. Maybe it's just an Isocol resistant mealy bug...LOL
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK oh no.. 😌thank you for the info Mam Liz💗is it safe for us and for our pet?

Thank you Liz for in-depth information. Appreciate your efforts in getting these videos. Do you use a go-pro to record the videos!? They are very clear and are able see even the tiny things you want us to see!
I'm using a Canon powershot SX620HS. Small and compact. Easy to point and shoot.
