Commercial banks and insurance companies are some of the largest financial institutions and employers of finance majors. Insurance is not always considered part of "finance" but not mentioning commercial banks is a big oversight.
I'm a Finance major with a minor in business analytics. I work part time in corporate finance/govt contracting while going to school full time & found this video incredibly helpful as I parse out which path I want to take. After my internship with a financial advisory firm I realized I had more options & was conflicted whether I wanted to go down the path of wealth management or stay in corporate or even maybe private banking/research. Theres so many options but I feel drawn to stay in corporate & maybe pursue another path once I get more experience under my belt. Would love some advice if anyone has similar experience, thanks for the video!
@@angue9613 I knew some econ & finance double majors as well as accounting it seemed like finance was the most practical but it had to do w the professors being more helpful with networking in the field. I'd suggest focusing on internships as much as you can experience will always beat out the type of degree.

Never could decide between a Finance major or Accounting major. Ended up doing a double major. B.S. Florida State University. First job was with the Feds as an auditor.
FP&A is required in most large companies, for example Unilever, Amazon etc. The analysts in the dept. will investigate the performance of the company and recommend actions to take. Skill sets required include commercial accumen, excel, critical thinking and data analysis. Hope this helps 🙂

Same here, I have a high interest in accounting; however my school offers a finance major program that only requires you to take 36 credit hours. I'm not sure how to incorporate these two disciplines together.
Great video! Very informational, short, and sweet. However, I disagree with the statement that finance majors can take on accounting roles. They technically "can" take on accounting roles. Although, ultimately, if you're considering an accounting role, I recommend majoring in accounting. Accounting firms prefer an accounting student over a finance student. This is something I've learned through personal experience at job fairs and via recruiting for my accouting firm. Just some food for thought.

It will definitely be more difficult to get the types of jobs most undergrads get. However, if you want something bad enough, you will find a way to make it happen. Best of luck, Robert!
Try to pull off that degree without racking up a pile of student loan debt. Lack of any kind of debt will make your life considerably more easy. I speak from experience. At 31 you will have more difficulty landing corporate jobs. If it were me I would be looking at the Federal Government because they will not age discriminate like the private sector. Don't screw around and waste time. I see plenty of guys mid to upper 30s and higher with no specific skills or a good degree. What kind of future will they have? At least if you have a good degree that teaches marketable skills you have potential even if you are unemployed for a while or underemployed. Avoid student debt like the plague and be flexible and able to relocate for the job.

I majored in management and minored in finance now working in Investment banking, a great path as long as you can handle the stress of it.
Did you network your way in? Been thinking of investment banking myself.
I sort of fell into it by getting my foot in the door though an Office Temp agency. But I wouldn't say that's the way to go for everyone.
