S420 owner here. My bridge is slightly different and it comes with an intonation screw which doesn't require me to restring the guitar. I have been eyeing this 1070 for YEARS literally, but the bridge was scaring me off. This man's video eased me into it and I decided to pull the trigger on this one instead of upgrading my pups. Appreciate it.
My heart legitimately swole up watching you wind the strings up to throw away, I do it the EXACT same way for the EXACT same reason, nobody ever told me to do it, just seemed like a good idea! Great minds think alike (and fools seldom differ!) :) thanks for the vid man, really helped me get to grips with doing this properly, got my first floating trem guitar about 6 months ago now and it finally sounds like it did before the first string change. Like a new guitar, to me at least. Owe ya one.
Glad you like it and you know....it just makes sense to wind them up to throw them away. I guess great minds do think alike. Love your comment. Laughed my arse off when I read it. Floating trems are a blast. Got you got yours worked out.
This is a great video thank you! Bought a guitar with "everything set up perfect and ready to go". Intonation was way off and the tremolo was hiked up 45 degrees. This helped so much to fix it.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic If you don't mind... I can't seem to get the trem parallel to the body despite screwing in the springs all the way. Do you have any advice?
@@pumpkinheadjrb more than likely you will have to put in shorter springs. over time springs get loose and lose their memory. Is the guitar new? What it the guitar?
@@Guitars-GearandMusic It's a RGix6DLB. Basically an Iron Label Ibanez. It's a 2018 so it's not that old. I'll take it to my shop and see if they have any springs and if that is probably the issue. I was considering the neck needing straightened, but its pretty perfect already.
@@pumpkinheadjrb The springs should be good only a couple years old. Granted who ever had the guitar before you could have changed the springs to a softer spring. You can get really tight springs with a lot of tension which it sounds like you need. You should only have to screw that claw in about half way to get the trem to level out.
It's one of the best videos about Edge Zero setup. I thought the bolts at the far end were for the intonation but I see you are using it for the fine tuning once the locking bolts are put back. I wish you had talked about the fine tuning bolts too. My RG version is arriving tomorrow and I need to change string gauge and tuning but I hope I can nail it now. Thanks.
Very cool. You will like the RG. I have an 1120 and a 5320 RG. The 1120 has actually become one of my better playing guitars. Thanks for checking out the video.
Thanks for that video. You should consider making a video on the complete setup including rod, attack, term levelling, etc. I also have an S1070PBZ. I love it. The Ibanez EJK1000 really helps with the intonation. It's like 50 bucks. A video on the Edge zero II leveling, attack and rod adjustment would be very instructive. Thanks again!
Hey bro, I am glad it worked for you and that I could help. Isn't the body on that guitar amazing? I love my S series but need to change out the pickups. Rock it hard brother.
@@pb25193 Actually I did not get them. Since I am giving this away when I hit 50k subs I decided to leave it stock. I was going to put a DiMarzio super 3 in the rear but then decided on a Lace Sensor Double Red for the rear, A Blue Gold for the front and a Silver for the middle, then decided to give this guitar away.
@@pb25193 Sound is crazy subjective is as pickups. I personally love the lace sensors. I had a fender ultra deluxe plus with a double red in the rear, a single blue in the front and a single silver in the mid. The guitar would scream but had this beautiful clean in position 4 and then this crazy creamy lead tone in position 5. Teh double red is insanely hot. great for metal and rock. The blue and silver are very smooth. great for classic rock and blues. I have a friend that had a Eric Clapton Fender with 3 lace sensor golds and it sound amazing, although not good for serious rock or metal. The tone zone is a very good pickup. It is more towards the hot side and great for metal and rock. I love DeMarzio pups but the set in that guitar are the standard Ibanez pups they put in everything except for my 5320, 1120 or the artist models like the Vai. But it really comes down to what you want to play. Is it Metal, rock, blues, country etc. So what I do is I figure out what I am using that guitar for and then go from there. What type of music you looking ot play?
Great video! Thank you! I just bought an RG version of the guitar you have in the video. I've been struggling with the high E string popping loose. The tip on lining it up in the saddle is probably where I'm going wrong. Have any tips on maintaining and smoothing out the neck/ fretboard? I love the look of the wizard neck, but it's a little different.
I just did a review on your guitar. The RG1120PBZ. Dude I love it. I had to do a bit of work in that neck to get it playing right. I had a hell of a time with the neck being that I am a Wolfgang player for 20 years, but once you get adjusted, it really is a nice neck. Does your neck have any issues?
I'm fairly new to all this, but the neck seems ok, feels fine, no fret buzz, etc. The wenge fretboard has a different feel, and the neck is not as smooth as I thought it might be. I was wondering what the best way to care for the neck/ fretboard is? Do you oil the fretboard, and if so, what works best? Have you had any issues with the different more corse woods of this neck? I looked up care of wenge and purple heart woods, etc, and all I could find was stuff on furniture care. Lol. Again, thanks for all the videos you're making. It really helps someone like me, new to a lot of this, get some great info. Keep on rocking 😎
I have my new for me Jem woody in my hands (that sounds odd... :/) and i needed to know how to intonate the zero edge trem. Thanks so much! It's kinda weird that you don't have any kind of mechanism to move the saddle other than sliding it ever so slightly. This really helped!
To adjust the truss rod, while holding the guitar if you are a righty, use your allen wrench and pull towards you. This will straighten the neck. Move away from you it will add relief. There is a bit more to it then just the truss rod but this is the jumping off point. I will be doing a video on neck adjustment to kinda finish out the series.
Thanks for making this vid! I just bought this s1070pbz back in June and had no idea how to change the strings. Love the rounded stainless steel frets, so Incredible smooth. One thing I’m not sure about tho is when I press down hard on the trem arm I hear a pop/click by the nut. Tried tightening the nut, maybe I should try without the locking nut on it. Anyway thanks again for all the tips you share on your channel.... Your such a wealth of knowledge!
Sometimes if you hear a click at the nut it is usually from the low E or A string. the trem holds tension against the strings and when you relax them they still have tension from the tuner side and it will pull the string in the saddle. Mine has done this and what I was hearing was the winding on the lower strings moving just a little bit in the locking nut from the tuner side and you get a pop from the ridge on the winding. Since it is a guitar and very resonate, it is a lot louder than you would think. Tune up the guitar and then wail on the trem for a couple of minutes and everything should seat in and be fine. Let me know if this helps. Thanks
Took off the locking nut, put some big bends sauce on each string’s contact point with the nut and just wailed on the trem for 5 mins. And wow, I think it’s finally fixed! I’m kinda shocked. You rock, thanks man!
i have a first gen AZ prestige but i always wanted an s series, i love that sleek body, , however i wanted one with stainless steel frets, and this model has them, so im very tempted, i know nothing about locking trem systems though, i never knew you had to cut the balls off the strong for example, very interesting, thanks for sharing, they dont seem to be the hassle i thought they were
If you get one you will like it. I do love the S series though personally I favor the RG just a little more....with that being said the body of the S in very very comfortable and I do like the jack being in the front and not on the corner of the edge of the body. Once you get used to setting up a trem system it is not that big a deal. I do not own a single guitar...as of right now....that does not have a trem on it. I use them way too much in my playing and they are a part of how I play and add a ton of expression to your solos or clean chord work.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic its all about the ss frets for me, i am not sire if they make an RG with stainless steel frets but i also like its body shape, i just find the s series sexier, i could have traded my les paul for one when they first came out and were called the sabre, im glad i didnt do that lol
@@darkestfugue Yeah dude. The RG PBZ. th-cam.com/video/vD4PlphxLo4/w-d-xo.html Here is my review. It is a beast with the Dimarzio Fusion Ceramic pickups and a way switching system. This is actually my main gigging guitar. It has the EVO Gold Frets. I have played they hell out of it for years and have wear on the frets. Check it out if you get a chance. It is a beast.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic very nice, its got the AZ 10 way pickup selector, unfortunately its discontinued so it would very difficult for me to get, the s type is available to me though, of course i would have to buy online and hope for the best, ive had some good luck with thomann so far
@@darkestfugue Yeah I hate they discontinued it. I have seen a few floating around in great shape. I wish they would have continued this model because my favorite aspect of this guitar is that they removed the tone knob and lowered the volume knob completely out of the way. If you watch my video of my Ibanez J Custom you will see where I put the volume where the tone is and put a kill switch in the volume position....which is also awesome. But....if you get the 1070 you will love it. They are phenomenal......especially the Nita Straus Jiva X....just impossible to find.
there is just one guitar that I have standard e tuning, and that is my Variax. but it's also for Rocksmith. all my others are alt tunings. not crazy tunings, just slightly flat on all, then there's the drop d on the Ibanez, but I have the problem where I need to do the intonation on it, and haven't got a clue how to yet. also for intonating, I highly recommend the Peterson strobo plus hdc tuner.
Yeah are used to have a Peterson tuner and they’re actually pretty slick. I love strobe tuners. As far as doing the internation if it’s standard or drop D you do it exactly the same. Get it set how you want it and then turn it To pitch and then tested at the 12th fret and see if it’s flat or sharp and then adjust the saddle accordingly.
Broke the high e string getting my intonation set. Damn I was so close to finishing and my guitar was sounding great. Well guess I gotta wait for my new high e to come in the mail. I noticed my low E string was as far up as yours once intonated. Considering we have the same same guitar it must be common from the factory. 🤔
Yeah. they really do not pay that great of attention to the details it seems. And I find this on more and more guitars. It is now to the point that no matter which guitar I buy I just expect to have to do a complete setup on it as soon as I get it.
This video taught me more than all the videos on TH-cam on the Edge Zero ii. Was desperately looking for a tutorial for my RG370AHMZ. Happy to say i found it. U earned a sub ... a well deserved one . Thanks!
Thanks my friend. I am getting ready a video on how to set the neck and action also. I have had a few people ask about it so that should wrap up my guitar setups. I am glad you found the video useful and thank for the sub.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic Eagerly waiting for it ... Please include the steps to be taken if we are changing gauges ( in my case, 0.009 to 0.008 ) . Thanks !
Actually I am going to do one on the back adjustment. I’ve had a few others that I’ve had to get up first but I do have one coming pretty soon. Thanks for watching
Love this video, the only thing i disapprove is tuning your guitar as well as intonation is having guitar laying there, bcs when you pickup guitar in your natural playing postion the pitch WILL change abit no matter what bcs neck will curve slightly at different positions and it will change the pitch abit, so it's best to tune it in your natural playing position for more accurate tuning
I agree and usually what I do is after I put on new strings and tune it I will grab the guitar and flex the neck a bit to help get it settled a bit. I just did not want to put that on the video recommending that people do that.
thanks a lot for such a detailed instructions on how to set the intonation I have Ibanez RG370DX (all black) Edge Zero Tremolo and I took it out of the closet after 10 years of not using it. I want to go back to playing the guitar, I need to learn everything from scratch pretty much. I barely remember chords, and minor pentatonic scale. I really lost all the skills and memory. my B string (2nd thinnest) is not tuning on the high frets, very badly. I figured it must be the intonation problem. I just don't understand why all the strings have relatively similar saddle position,, including the B string. and yet B string is SO OUT OF TUNE. the 12th fret harmonic sounds off almost near the 13th fret. I don;t have the electronic guitar tuner, but B string sounds flat, the higher frets we go. I don't know which direction to move the saddle. I've been trying for hours, WITHOUT THE TUNER (well I have built-in tuner for the open strings in the amplifier, so I know the open strings are perfectly tuned). I was moving the saddle up and down for many hours, and the problem is still there. I already ordered the electronic guitar tuner, and waiting for it now. any idea why B string intonation differs so much from 5 other strings? I wish the saddle position could be fine adjusted using some horizontal screw. this system is not very friendly at all, when it comes to intonation. I am really frustrated not being able to adjust it.
Generally with the problem you’re having it is the internation. They do make a tool that locks onto the saddle that you can adjust with very finite movements but more than likely you will have to order that because I doubt the local guitar store would have one. The only other way which is a pain in the ass is to move it literally 1 mm at a time lock it down retune it and keep doing it. And just for the sake of argument have you replaced the strings? You need to make sure that that is the correct string on the guitar for that position or that the string is not just completely dead. If the string is short you need to move the saddle away from the neck. If the string is flat you need to move the saddle towards the neck. Internation can be a hassle to set but it is critically important for the guitar to play correctly.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic yes I am waiting for the 3 sets of the new strings (2x Ernie Balls Super Slinky, 1x D'Addario EXL110), the ones in the guitar are very old, and not played for a very long time. you must be right about the strings, but I will only be able to test it when the new ones arrive. I moved the saddle so many times in this painful process of loosening the string, then moving the saddle 0.5mm, re-tightening the string, tuning it etc. that I probably nearly destroyed the threads in the bolt's socket. I hope I didn't. for someone who never played for 10 years, it will take some time to rediscover everything. thanks for your reply and suggested solution. I'm pretty sure you nailed it.
I get that. It does not bother me that much as I have been doing it since I started to play. Quick story. I moved down to alabama for a bit and they had a Les hanging on the wall with floyd on it. The dude said it had been there for over two years. The price was down to 3400.00. I told him if they could get it 3000.00 I would buy it. the clerk said "who would want a Les Paul with floyd". I replied, who would not want a les paul with a floyd. that's the only way I would buy one. He said give me a couple of days to see if I can get it too that price. Someone walked in the next day and bought for 3400.00. AFTER TWO YEARS of it hanging there. Amazing. But yes. I am a diehard wolfgang guy....but the wizard necks are my favorite.
Once you destring, floyd string blocks are loose in the saddle too, and will fall out of the saddle if you flip the guitar front down. To combat this, use a 3 inch piece of scotch tape on top of the saddles to hold the saddle blocks in place. When you're ready to put the strings in, the scotch tape comes off easily and leaves no noticeable residue.
Yes they come loose but the Ibanez blocks will literally pop out when you pull the string out. I have never really had that issue with floyd type blocks.
I have one of these crap trems. The E and A strings keep popping out, can't get them to stay in. Very close to smashing the guitar into small fragments, its been nothing but grief, but after I take the warpig pup out of it :)
@@Guitars-GearandMusic really :) I think I figured it out. Every moron out there tells you to not "over tighten". Was tightening them with a short allen wrench (no leverage) to where it stopped turning. Hey Trace, I have a question regarding the S1070 and the Edge Zero trem. Just did my first string change on it with 9-42s, and noticed the trem sits slightly high in rear (not level with the body) but I figure it most be normal since it is just resting against the stop bar in the rear. I can't seem to find any videos on the Edge Zero II and how it should sit against the guitar. Grateful for any feedback.
It should sit fairly level with a slight tilt up in the rear. Tell you what....if you go to my channel you can get my email address. If you send me an email I will send you back a pic of how mine sits in the guitar. That should help you get it set.
Trace, can't seem to find any email listed on your channel. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, it's usually listed under the About category on the channel. All I find it an https TH-cam user address.
You are like me...very precise❤️ But you can try tuning not with the guitar on the table but on your body...standing up. Is there a video where you explain zero regulation, on the back of guitar?
I explain that in this video or a different on but I do it on the table because it is easier to film. I will be doing one on the zero system very soon.
Yoo this video was extremelyyyyy helpful when i got my guitar with this bridge. Unfortunately im having problems with loosing up the saddle for intonation probably because the allen screw im using is most likely a smaller size so do u mind telling me the size of the allen key u are using for loosening up the saddle?
for the saddle on this trem it is a 2mm. For some reason Ibanez puts some of them in crazy tight. If you have to buy one get a very high quality one. Your screws will thank you. I use a set of craftsman allens that have a ball head on one side. They make it really easy to get these off.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic thank you so much dude, im pretty sure the one im using is smaller than 2mm, imma get some good quality allen heads. Thank you so much brother!!

HELP!!!! MY 1070PBZ strings are all really in tune with each other and are equally flat. If I adjust the spring tension knob slightly will this give me the few cents sharp I need across all six strings?
@@Bairov Ok. This is a balancing act. You can adjust the knob to your trem to bring them sharp and in tune but this will not solve the issue in the long run. First always do this with new strings. This is what I do to all my guitars when I get them. Put on the new strings. Do not lock them at the nut. Stretch them a lot then retune. Do it again and again until you get the strings very little out of tune when you stretch them. Tune the guitar then set you trem to the desired height. I keep mine pretty level. After you set the trem where you want it retune the guitar. This will move the trem of course. Turn the knob again to get it back where you want it then retune. Keep doing this until you have the tuning correct and the trem in the right place. You are trying to balance the in tune tension of the strings to the amount of tension they put on the trem and you may have to do this several times to get it correct. After all that is balanced, screw the fine tuners all the way out and tune the guitar a touch flat. Put on you locks and then use the fine tuners to bring back into pitch and all should be well. If you do this correctly it will take you a little time but well worth the extra work.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic Pheww... I was losing sleep! Your awesome man. I chose this guitar after watching your review and it was exactly what I wanted. My only issue is my own ignorance with the trem. Should I unlock the nut before I adjust the spring tension knob?
@@Bairov absolutely unlock the nut. All adjustments should be made with the nut unlocked until the very end. I have a video that will be up in about 2 hours with all the steps to set up a guitar correctly.
This is so good... I have the exact same guitar but it's an RG1070PBZ. Thank you so much for this video.... I have a request, Could you please make a video on how to set up low action on this guitar with no buzz issues and how to fix them. Have been struggling with this problem for years
Actually that is the last one I am doing on setup. I wanted it out already but other videos got in the way but I will do one very very soon. Hopefully within a week.
I hope so. there for a while beside the shreddy guitars nothing had a full trem system. I have noticed them coming back a bit. The only guitar I would by without one would be a Les Paul....although I would prefer the Axcess with one....or one of the older single cut PRS's.
i just did the exact same string change on the exact same guitar.. but my question is regarding the tremelo leveling. should i make the trem bottom level with guitar body? or the top of it? The top has an angle to it..
awesome video!! just got my first guitar with a double locking ibanez trem, this video was super helpful in helping me set up my edge zero ii. i’m having trouble finding resources online about the edge zero ii (stuff like maintenance, bridge height & adjusting tension ect ect.) do you have any advice or resources? ALSO! is it advantageous to remove the zero point system? i’m looking for trem arm sound similar to that of Jason Becker/Shawn Lane (just vocal sounding uses of trem!) will the zero point system support that kind of playing? ^__^
The zero point system is crazily stable. I would not remove that. It makes tension adjustments really simple. However, if you are looking for that warble sound that a lot of players like Satriani and Vai do....it will not do that. The springs are not long enough...but I believe that is what also adds to the tuning stability. As far as the height, that is really a setting on taste. I was just having this same convo with another person on youtube. He sent me his email and I sent him a pick of where mine sits in the body. His was seriously high. Tension is easy to set by turning the wheel in the back. If it is set correctly, you guitar should not go out of tune if you dive or pull up on the trem. Dive it all the was down and check your tuning. Tune it then pull it all the way up and check it again. That will let you know how to set the tension. Need anything else just let me know. thanks for the comment.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic thank you!! you are a lifesaver, i’m moving from a les paul with super low tension & action (I have super small hands!!) and was hoping to replicate that on my new guitar. i’ll follow your tidbit on the tuning/tension thing thanks a shitload dude
DO NOT SCREW THE HEX SCREWS TOO HARD. I thiught I was doing it with reasonable force but no the screws just softened and now the key doesn't fit it. cannot take the screws out and idk what to do tbh.
Yeah brother. I always say small increments and small adjustments make big differences. This suck man. You will have to get a small drill bit and drill it out....trying not to hurt the threads or drill a small hole and get a tap and back it out. You can get it out but it is not that easy being that small.....but you have nothing to loose. If you have a good guitar tech in your area he can get that out for you. And yes.....that metal will give pretty easily unless you have a lo pro or a real floyd.
So I have a Ibanez JS24P that has a Edge tremolo (10.8mm string spacing) on it. My question is , when I get out of tune while playing and use the fine tunners to get back into tune and it almost always makes the next string goes sharp so it takes me forever to get it back in tune . any thoughts? thanks man
You might want to check and make sure you have the correct tension on the trem itself. If you don't it will be nearly impossible to tune correctly. This is usually a case of the intonation being out or the wrong tension on the bridge.
I love that guitar! I have two S's but they are standards and not Prem or Prestige. ZR trem vs your Edge Zero. As for this one.....Some day :). I relate to your tapping the used string ends and making a bundle of them so you don't get stabbed in the trash can. Hey Trace. Do you teach? I you'd be a good teacher for me. Let me know? Best Regards!
Yeah dude I have stabbed myself with guitar strings more times than I can count. And what is the worst is when you’re pulling it out of the tuning peg and it comes flying and stabbed you in the arm. And actually I do teach. I have quite a few videos up right now on my TH-cam channel about playing fast and intervals and such and once I get my house settled because I am moving I’m actually going to start an entire course on theory. And yes if you get a chance to buy the premium it is worth every penny
Hey Trace, may I know if the zero point system (ZPS) at the back of the guitar work better than the normal claw and screw version? I've had an edge 3 tremolo and tuning was a nightmare especially since the bridge fluctuates so much during tuning...so much so that I'd rather just go with a hardtail guitar. But I don't want to give up on the tremolo system if the ZPS solves the tuning instability problem. I'm sure you've tried both claw and zps....what's your take?
Man I love the zero system. I love it so much that I don't play my prestige as much as my premium and that is a big part of it. To me is seems much more stable, has a lot better feel to it and it seems to hold tune better. I wish they would put it on the prestige with the lopro, or put the lopro on the premium. I just played a 4 hour show last night and used my EVH Wolfgang and my 1120 premium. tuned both when I got there because of the humidity and did not have to retune for the entire show. On my prestige, I find I have to tune it once if not twice during the show. Its not out by much but enough for me to notice.
question, first time im changing the strings on a used ibanz-the "screws"that release the strings on the bottom end wont budge at all, last ownerway overtightened whats the next step?yes i tried sprays...and its not rusty.?thanks any help adveice appreciated.
I hate it when people do that because there is no reason and it does more damage than anything. What you can try is to get a bit for a drill and seat it into the head and pull the trigger full and sometimes the quick reaction from the drill will spin that out. You have to make sure that it is seated all the way into the head because if not it will strip that head out then you’re drilling it out and that becomes a problem. I’ve had to do it that way with a drill before and luckily it worked but you’re squeezing the trigger to full on it reacts very fast and sometimes will break that loose. If lubricants have not worked then dude you may have to pull the trem out and apply a little heat to it and that’s also not a good thing if avoidable
Something else you can do that does work but you will have to replace the screws is they make reverse threaded bits that will go into the hole and get a bite on it and then you can just twist it out but chances are it may damage the head and he will have to replace the screws but that would definitely get the screws out
@@Guitars-GearandMusic thanks for that info, finally got em out, found a weird handle i had that the hex wrench fit it and it gave me leveage,i had to really crank it,your right who the hell does that-makes me wonder if it got traded in because they couldnt change the strings..its a nice thin bodied s series with that zero restance trem with the string tensioner knob on the back, would have been a nightmare to set that all up again...
@@grrlinduluth Glad you got that out dude. Yeah those screws just need to be snug. Kills me when people crank the hell out of them. I love the S bodies. They are crazy comfortable. Glad you got your ax up and running brother. Rock the hell out of it.
Great video. What I’m concerned about is that because the base plate is not made of hardened steel the intonation screws are going to loosen over time. Then by tightening them it will cause them to strip. Also the same problem with the fine tuners. I love Ibanez and the specs are killer for this guitar and also the RG1120, but I’m disappointed that they cheeped out on one of the most crucial components. Have you noticed any problems in those regards since the making of this video?
It is not the lopro but honestly I have not had any issues at all from the trem and I have been wailing on this one for 2 years now. Dozens of string changes and not a single issue. I have not had any issue with the screws becoming loose or weak. Honestly, they should put the lopro on every guitar they make from this price point up. I do think they cheapened out a little on this but I have zero complaints about this trem so far....except that it is not the lopro
robert powers I got mine through Sweetwater. Trace’s original video on the S1070 helped push me over the edge to get one because like he said there were no videos on it really going in any sort of depth. But when I was teetering on the idea they had two in stock and when I called my guy up to order they had both sold. They had some on the way and I only had to wait like a week for it arrive. They sent me pictures of it and I pulled the trigger. All in all it’s a great guitar!
Hey man! I have a Ibanez RG350 DX guitar and I have never actually changed the strings on it myself, do you know if I change the strings on it the same way you did on your guitar? because I'm about to get new strings and try to do it myself. Also I would really like to know the exact full name of the D'addario strings you recommend for the guitar.
Don't know if you're still answering questions on this thread, but my issue is that I cannot get the G string to stay in the trem. It doesn't matter how perfectly I slide the string into the slot, it pops out every time I get it close to pitch. I bought this guitar used but it's in pristine shape, and this is the first time I've changed its strings. I have changed Floyd strings before though, so I'm not unfamiliar with the system. It's a 9 gauge string set, which is what was on it before, so I'm at a loss. And I haven't even tried the skinnier B and E strings yet. Do you have any advice? I can't find anything about this problem anywhere; you're the only one who even mentioned that it can be an issue. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
Always answering question brother. Yeah these are a bitch sometimes. You have to get the string perfectly lined up with the saddle block which as you can see is very skinny. I mean it has to be dead freaking center or the sting will pop out every time. I have had my high E pop out several times so now I use a lot of light and a magnifying glass on the higher strings to make sure it is dead balls centered. It can be a pain. If you have it completely lined up and it is still popping out then you may have to replace the block. They can get deformed over time. You should be able to get those about anywhere. You can also try to just clip off the ball....not the extra winding because that gives you a much thicker piece of the string to put against the black. Don't hold me to this but I think you can also remove the block and the ball on the string, place it in pretty deep then slide the block back in. I have not tried this but every time I change my strings I keep meaning to do that because it looks like there is enough room in there.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic I ended up trying the trick of just cutting off the ball and using the thicker end. And I just got home from playing a 4-hour gig with the guitar and nothing popped out, so that seems to work. Thank you for the suggestion.
Trace, hey I got a question if you won’t mind. some guys are fixing the intonation by tuning a string to its standard tuning and then checking the 12th fret for accuracy just like you did, then you adjust the saddle for the intonation adjust... Now how about if I tune a string to a lower reference note then check the 12th fret if it’s in the same tuning as its open note... tuning it to standard for the reference pitch before adjustment gives too much stress for the new strings in my opinion.
You can set your strings to the tuning you want and then check the intonation. I have my guitars set down a half step and I set my necks for a half step. Generally I set my intonation to that tuning and it works just fine. I did this video to sit in with a band and they were in standard but I have already set this back down to Eb and reset the intonation at Eb. Granted you will want to use a heavier gauge string, but if the guitar is setup right you can tune it to about whatever you want and set it accordingly. The only issue you could run into is if you go down like two steps on the tuning, you would have to use a much heavier gauge string and it may buzz like hell because you are one a 25.5 scale guitar and those tunings are better at say a 27 scale guitar.
You set the tuning to E standard here. You play at E flat normally, so will you have to adjust the trem system in order to keep everything the same, or should it still be good to go for ya?
Yeah I am normally in Eb. Going back to E and moving to lighter strings pretty much keeps it close. The intonation was only out on one string. I did lose a little sustain however. Normally you would adjust the neck but since I am going back to Eb and that setup is pretty good I did not want to adjust it.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic Sorry to keep buggin ya. Have you ever considered trying a Digitech Drop pedal? I got one and I for a 1/2 step to full step i dont hear any latency. To me sounds same as just tuning down a bit.
@@jshoenfe That is not an issue with the Zero system. The spring system is in two pieces which makes the springs extremely short. On the Jiva that I had that was a huge issue and I would take a piece of an old T shirt and stuff it around the springs to mute them. I have several guitars with the Zero system and have never had an issue with spring vibration.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic ohh dude forgot to tell you. There is a way to get intonation adjusted super easy with out loosing in the strings everytime. You can lock it in place while you adjust bridge. There is a little bolt that looks exactly like the fine tuners but it’s screwed in on the side closets to the 6th string. You screw that on to the back on your fine tuner of the string your adjusting
It is not possible and usually you can't with a locking trem system. I usually run mine a little lower on the high E side because fast action is not as important on the low E side.
You can't put them in the trem system if that is what you are referring to. There may be room inside of there but you would have to pull the block out everytime. What most people do is string the guitar through the tuners and put the ball down on that end. then you clip off the amount of string you don't need for the trem and that way you don't have to worry about string slipping on the tuning post. the ball will hold it in place.
Trace, thanks for a really solid video. The review on this one was excellent as well, still not sure about that 35 dollar pick tho :D One question left, would be great to see some more detail on using the zero point to adjust the trem back to flat after changing string gauge or tuning. Is it really as deceptively simple as tune it perfect, adjust the wheel to flat, and go back to playing?
I have the exact same bridge but when I restrung my guitar the bridge did not raise at all, it stayed seated. do you have ant suggestions on how fix this issue?
It is not as sleek as the lo pro, maybe not as fluid either but I literally wear this thing out when playing with my band and I have had zero issues out of it, and I have been wailing on this for over a year now.
Trace, i got a ibanez 1070bpz and this is the first floyed rose bridged guitar i have ever owned. I need help to lower the bridge to be flushed with the bridge how do i lower it i see all the extra parts in the back of the guitar, pls i need the help.
If you just need to lower the bridge there are two screws that are the pivot points at the front. Where the trem floats against those two poles, that is how you adjust it. Each of those screws will have an Allen wrench. As you twist those in it will lower the bridge into the body. When I adjust my Trems I only adjust them quarter turns.
First things first. Are the strings new? You cannot set intonation with old strings. If they are new it is possible to have a bad guitar string. Is this a new problem? If yes then it could simply be a bad string. If it is not a new problem then it could be the nut itself. The nut could be too high for that one string or not slotted correctly. Is it a locking nut? Also make sure your pickups are the correct distance from the strings. They should be 2mm to 3mm away to keep the magnets from pulling to hard.
Thank you ! I have a question : I have to tune the whole tremolo, because I needed to disassemble it to clean and remove rust. I put it back with no problem, but it is completely out of tune. I mean the string holder blocks used to be in a certain position. A bit more towards bridge or neck. Now, they are all in a random position. Do you know how to set it up ? I saw that there is a certain tool we can use to adjust it. That guy : images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71K0ieV8LuL._AC_SL1440_.jpg Can you help me understand what is needed to do ? Thanks bro
Can you get it in tune or is it only out if you fret a chord. If it pulls out of tune when you fret then your intonation is out. I'm sure you know how to check but get the string in perfect tune, the fret at the 12th and check your tuner to see if flat or sharp. If you dismantled the blocks from the trem you will need to reset the intonation. Actually, I check my intonation everytime I change my strings because it can slip. Did you take the blocks out of the trem? you can use that tool to set the intonation. Makes it a little easier but I just do mine like in the vid. Loosen the string, adjust, tighten, retune. Also, did the tension on the trem change. That will kill your tune and you will never get it back in unless you reset the tension correctly. Let me know if this helps. If not there are other things to check but this is the obvious ones first.
The 2 is a cheaper version of the Edge Zero. But honestly, you won't have any issues with either one. This guitar has the 2 and I completely wail on it and have never had an issue. It is like a Floyd Rose and a Floyd Rose Special.
I tried restringing the same guitar, but I could never get it in tune. The edge term keeps rising as I tune the strings, putting the other strings out of tune and ultimately pulling the string out of whack. Needless to say I am a novice.
Ok. then your bridge is not set correctly. do what you need to get the guitar in perfect tune, then start to lower the rear of the bridge via the zps wheel on the back, retune and repeat. Keep doing this until you have the bridge exactly straight with the body and then tune it back up. That should take care of that issue. Granted it will rise again when you change the strings but the correct tension will put it right back into the correct place. Using a floating trem does take a little more work but well worth it once you get it all sorted out.
thanks and I am glad it helped. Actually I have a video on my channel about fret buzz that a subscriber was having issues with and asked me to put on up. th-cam.com/video/hwKY50xNsI8/w-d-xo.html
If it is an Ibanez trem the strings must be in the dead center of the block, or maybe I should say blade. Especially on the high b and e string. When tightening them they have a tendency to slide to the side of the block (blade) and they will pop out every time. This is a little frustrating as I have had that issue a couple of times. Is it an Ibanez trem?
@@Guitars-GearandMusic thank you for your help.. yes it's Ibanez trem, tried your advice and it works, the issue now is when i up my trem the 6th string always pop out but the rest is fine
@@gusblackgroove899 If you have a string that keeps popping out even after that then you more than likely will need to replace the saddle. Luckily they are cheap, but first I would pull it out and check. The blade (block) of the saddle should be perfectly straight. It is hard to check because for whatever reason Ibanez makes that part of the block so freaking small but with such a small amount of area to pinch the string a little bit of damage will not let it hold correctly.
Every single time I tighten the edge zero 2 at the bridge, it snaps the top 2 strings. Went through 3 packs of strings. Waste of money, returning it for a Floyd Rose guitar.
Really? I have 4 Ibanez guitars with this bridge, or a low pro and I have never had a single issue out of any of them. Actually, in the 5 years I have been playing Ibanez guitars I have only broke one string. And if you are breaking the E and the A string there is something seriously wrong. I have never broken and E or A in my entire life. It is always the high E or the B. Floyds are good. I have a few of them also with 0 issues, they are just a little bulky it seems. But I have to ask. What do you mean tighten at the bridge? Do you mean the saddles?
I know right. I hate playing in standard. But if you are doing youtube videos and you are not in standard then you get a ton of hate mail people threatening to eat your children. It's crazy.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic there's several ways to tune I like standard and drop D. Sometimes I even play in just D tuning.

The blue and silver are very smooth. great for classic rock and blues. I have a friend that had a Eric Clapton Fender with 3 lace sensor golds and it sound amazing, although not good for serious rock or metal. The tone zone is a very good pickup. Great video! Thank you! I just bought an RG version of the guitar you have in the video. I've been struggling with the high E string popping loose. The tip on lining it up in the saddle is probably
where I'm going wrong.
They do have a tool for that but since most people do not own one I do it the hard way so they can see how to do it. Thanks brother
Perfect video, I learned almost everything I needed from this video, thank you. Now I just need to know how to adjust the neck/struss rod.

I do love the S series though personally I favor the RG just a little more....with that being said the body of the S in very very comfortable and I do like the jack being in the front and not on the corner of the edge of the body. Once you get used to setting up a trem system it is not that big a deal. I do not own a single guitar...as of right now....that does not have a trem on it. there is just one guitar that I have standard e tuning, and that is my Variax. but it's also for Rocksmith. all my others are alt tunings. not crazy tunings, just slightly flat on all, then there's the drop d on the Ibanez, but I have the problem where I need to do the intonation on it, and haven't got a clue how to yet. also for intonating, I highly recommend the Peterson strobo plus hdc tuner.

I just did not want to put that on the video recommending that people do that.
thanks a lot for such a detailed instructions on how to set the intonation
I have Ibanez RG370DX (all black) Edge Zero Tremolo and I took it out of the closet after 10 years of not using it.

Really? dude I have several of these guitars that I gig with constantly and have never had an issue. And you say the 5 and 6 string keeps popping out?
@@Guitars-GearandMusic really :) I think I figured it out. Every moron out there tells you to not "over tighten".

But you can try tuning not with the guitar on the table but on your body...standing up. Is there a video where you explain zero regulation, on the back of guitar?
I explain that in this video or a different on but I do it on the table because it is easier to film. I will be doing one on the zero system very soon.
This was helpful but I will caution against overtightenting like at 30:59. Very easy to strip these screws!

HELP!!!! MY 1070PBZ strings are all really in tune with each other and are equally flat. If I adjust the spring tension knob slightly will this give me the few cents sharp I need across all six strings?
Oh and my float is maybe just a tad on the high side, so an adjustment wont ruin my float

Thanks my friend. I hope it helped.
i just did the exact same string change on the exact same guitar.. but my question is regarding the tremelo leveling. should i make the trem bottom level with guitar body? or the top of it? The top has an angle to it..
I set mine by the bottom because of the angle on the top. If you level the top you will not have a lot of travel lifting the trem. Do use the bottom.
awesome video!! just got my first guitar with a double locking ibanez trem, this video was super helpful in helping me set up my edge zero ii. i’m having trouble finding resources online about the edge zero ii (stuff like maintenance, bridge height & adjusting tension ect ect.) do you have any advice or resources?
ALSO! is it advantageous to remove the zero point system? i’m looking for trem arm sound similar to that of Jason Becker/Shawn Lane (just vocal sounding uses of trem!) will the zero point system support that kind of playing?

So I have a Ibanez JS24P that has a
Edge tremolo (10.8mm string spacing) on it.
My question is ,
when I get out of tune while playing and use the fine tunners to get back into tune and it almost always makes the next string goes sharp so it takes me forever to get it back in tune .
any thoughts?
thanks man
You might want to check and make sure you have the correct tension on the trem itself. If you don't it will be nearly impossible to tune correctly. This is usually a case of the intonation being out or the wrong tension on the bridge.
Also when setting this make sure you have new strings on it. That is also a big factor when setting up correctly.
I play in standard. You look better without that backwards hat man! Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Good pointer about the hat. And that is funny. Thanks for the comment.

@@aldersmoke1 Glad it helped bro. They are slick guitars and good you got it all worked out.
Do you have any issues with spring vibration?
Do you mean sound coming through from excessive string vibration?
@Trace Taylor the springs are vibrating if you strike a chord then mute it.

Hi, just curious, how do you adjust the strings to the radius of the fretboard with this tremolo? or is it not possible with this tremolo?
It is not possible and usually you can't with a locking trem system. I usually run mine a little lower on the high E side because fast action is not as important on the low E side.
Can we leave the rings of the strings, or do you have to cut them!

Well you really can't do that on this type of bridge....but you shouldn't have to do it. What is the issue?
I have a rg model and i just can't get d string intonated. Help please!
@@Guitars-GearandMusic well the strings are not that new so i guess that's the problem. Other strings are fine but the d string is way off.

That guy : images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71K0ieV8LuL._AC_SL1440_.jpg
Can you help me understand what is needed to do ?
What model is this ibanez?
This is the 2020 1070PBZ

The 2 is a cheaper version of the Edge Zero. But honestly, you won't have any issues with either one. This guitar has the 2 and I completely wail on it and have never had an issue. It is like a Floyd Rose and a Floyd Rose Special.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic thanks for the reply!
Using a floating trem does take a little more work but well worth it once you get it all sorted out.

my string keeps pop out from the saddle i really don't know why, it's tight enough
It is hard to check because for whatever reason Ibanez makes that part of the block so freaking small but with such a small amount of area to pinch the string a little bit of damage will not let it hold correctly.
Try some 9.5-44s for half step down on 25.5" scale length. Thank me later.
"Dead balls accurate"
It's an industry term
Why on earth do they make the intonation adjustment on these tremolos so difficult? I just had to do mine, what a pain in the arse.
Yeah it is a bitch. They do make A tool that will hold the saddle while you can adjust it which does make it a bit easier.
26:20 I don't know why It gave laugh 🤣
Learned a lot from video, by the way the thumb looks like it really hurts:(
I’m glad you like the video and hopefully it helped. And yes the thumb hurt like crazy. It was completely crushed and took seven months to heal
Came for the learnin
Learned "it aint That big a DILL"
Funny. It's really not. pretty easy stuff.
Yeah really not too many play in e standard anymore..
But I don't know all the other tunings have to listen to someone else's guitar to find that type of thing. Doesn't really matter to me I only mess with about three tunings and I really like standard E tuning don't care about what any of these clowns think...
@@patrickshannon4516 Yeah I use a couple of tunings. I don't want to have to carry 10 guitars to a show because of all the tunings everyone uses. I am actually getting ready to do a video on tunings. When you change your tuning kind of makes you rethink things and it will open a lot of doors to ideas.....but it can be a headache trying to remember what guitar is tuned to what.
Still not well tuned 🥲
Standard tuning is normal half step down eewww
You should intonate your guitar in a playing position. not laying on a table
Yes....I mention that in a different video. This one was just to show the steps and what is involved
Don't care for edge tremolo Floyd Rose much easier to maintain
I get that but I am the opposite. I love how the edge just seems to disappear under your hands without having that huge ramp on the back for the fine tuners. The low profile is wonderful. Thanks
@@Guitars-GearandMusic things like that don't really bother me it's like I'm always hearing people talking about fret sprout and that being an issue and that's never been any kind of an issue with me I do however prefer satin finish neck no gloss on the neck though.
@@patrickshannon4516 It is just what you get used to. When I first played a Lo Pro I was blown away with it and it was a very easy sell for me......but that would not stop me from getting anything else. My EVH's all have the EVH trems....which are basically floyds....and I play the hell out of them.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic I noticed with edge trem system they seem a little more high maintenance they really aren't bad but I like things that i have to work on to be as few as possible. Floyd didn't ever give me any problems couple times had to remove the corrosion with a Dremel tool but other than that had some for years that didn't have any issues. Edge aren't horrible and neither is Wilkenson or kahler. But my own personal preference is Floyd Rose.
@@patrickshannon4516 And I get that. I haven't' had any issues at all the edge trems. And dude I abuse them at shows. Hell, I had a guitar with an old Kahler on it and it worked great...but was a little weird...the design. I prefer the Lo Pros but nothing will stop me from buying a guitar if it is a good unit.
Not that big a dill!
