Ep. 127: Roswell | New Mexico RV travel camping

  • Roswell would be just like many other small towns in the US, were it not for an obsession with UFOs and aliens. In 1947, a US Army Air Force balloon crashed on a ranch near Roswell. Even after the US Military confirmed that it was a nuclear test surveillance balloon, conspiracy theories surrounding the event persist even today. The citizens of Roswell have nurtured a cottage industry catering to UFO tourists who travel to this southeastern New Mexico town because of what's been described as "the world's most famous, most exhaustively investigated, and most thoroughly debunked UFO claim."
    We camp at the Lea Lake Campground in Bottomless Lakes State Park while visiting Roswell, including the kitchy UFO stuff and the Historical Society for Southeastern New Mexico Museum, and do a bit of kayaking on Lea Lake. But first we need to contend with some unruly campground neighbors!
    Filmed: October 22-25, 2019

    ABOUT US
    Welcome to Grand Adventure, a TH-cam channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
    We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on TH-cam, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.
    We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a non-resident of NM you have to be planning on sufficient days in NM State Parks to make it worthwhile, but if you're spending a month total in NM State Parks it can save quite a bit of money.

  • @KJRitch
    @KJRitch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We were there last April and got our non resident pass. Weather was nice and warm. The campground has mostly first come first served but there are some reservable. Campground filled up every evening so get there early for first come first served sites. Water and electric was $4 with pass. I road my bike to the bike trail but hiked that trail the rode back to the campground.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're goingto spend more than a few weeks each year in NM State Parks, the non-resident pass then makes sense. Glad you enjoyed your time there.

      @@GrandAdventure There is a commemorative monument there. It is in the middle of nowhere. I plan to go back. Everyone I asked in Roswell said I couldn't go there, or get anyone to take me there...which only piqued my curiosity. It's about 70 miles NW of Roswell as the crow flies. Figuring out how to get there is half the fun, so I'll leave that to you. Met an old cowboy very nearby who'd lived there his whole life...had an interesting conversation. You may recognize some nearby ranch buildings from the old photos, which let's you know you're getting close. ;)

      Yup. Some of the others, too, while some are too saline to support them.

    U do know how to row that boat. Did u fish any or do u know if it's good fishing there (bass)

      We do know that folks do indeed fish Lea Lake, but we don't know what they're catching. I've heard some folks say that they stock it with trout from the nearby hatchery in Dexter, so if I recall my fishing correctly trout and bass usually don't coexist?

      Steven Sapien - exactly. He literally says it’s a conspiracy theory and dismisses it all together!! Wow, in my mind that would be like saying cave dwellers with box cutters actually pulled off 9/11!! I guess the brainwashing is alive and well in so, so many folks still. UNSUBSCRIBED
