Same. I first saw one in Melbourne, Australia at friend's of my parents in late 1980 but every toy shop had sold out and I had to wait until we returned to Perth from our holiday before I could get one. I remember what a craze they were at school. But then, just like that, it was all over and by 1982 no-one was interested. I still have my original Ideal cube although the cylindrical packaging is now missing. It's in in solved state, so I guess that must be from my last solution 43 years ago. I wonder if the packaging shown in the video is before or after the cylindrical plastic case - I'm guessing later so as to cut down on the costs as it's just cardboard and a bit of shrink-wrap.
Loved learning more about the history of the cube! Wish I could have gone back in time and bought a box of the originals from the 80s. Turned out to be a very special toy!
Fun fact: Tingman was born in 1985 So he is nearly as old as the brand itself. people are thinking, HOW?! Well, If you have watched tingman’s Brisbane Autumn Part 2 comp vlog where he answered questions, he said he as 37, Meaning he is 38 this year and 2023-38 = 1985 Edit: Tingman maybe hinting a BREAK from shorts😂😂😂😂😂
Meaning I learnt how to solve (and still possess) a crunchily slow off-brand Rubik’s cube about four years before Tingman was a twinkle in his mother’s eye. Now I feel so, so old. 😅
Tingman: How do you do that in 22 seconds!? Me: Don't forget that the cubes used in the 1982 comp were very well lubed. I think they'd been broken in as well.
My 1981 Ideal Rubik's cube (still sealed) has Red-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-White variation. Not the Yellow-White, Blue-Green as shown in your video. This later became the standard configuration in modern cubes.
hes a gan fanboy so he probably mains a gan 12-14 and a gan skewb he mained the gan 251m (he possibly switched to a newer gan tho) he was maining the xman bell v1 pyra before he probably mains the mgc sq1 cause thats the only competitive one (lmao) he said he liked the gan mega in a review and thats about as far as i know
even if the color arrangement looks different, the algorithms can still be executed properly as long as you have a good understanding of the colors in the center pieces along with it's opposite sides. i borrowed my friend's knockoff rubik's cube which is so hard to turn and has different color arrangements but i managed to solve it due to my understanding of the colors.
So in some countries it is still called the magic cube, in Brazil its a lot more common to see people saying "cubo magico" (magic cube) instead of "cubo de Rubik" (Rubiks cube)
Last night i was at my grandmas and she gave me an original rubik's cube from my R.I.P grandpa, he actualy gave that cube to my dad and uncle when they were yong. If i made a mistake im a word, im not from the UK or the USA im from Bulgaria 😊
That was my very first cube in the same year (I think). I was 10 and learned to solve from the book that came with it. I could never get sub 1min, because it would fly apart and there was NO LUBE back then. Not that it mattered, because the cube was awful. After a year or so, I quit trying and lost my obsession until late in the 90's, which lasted for a little bit. 2013 was the year I discovered speed cubing (thank you CrazyBadCuber!), and got myself the DaYan ZhanChi plus a 2x2 and 4x4. Starting 2021, I've accumulated maybe 100 cubes (tried around 20 different 3x3's). Now I solve something everyday (main is the YS3 and Tornado V3).
Did you ever put a solve for the triple 3x3 v1 cube. The on you tried to complete in 15 minutes. I stuck on the middle cube. Finished the out side cubes. Would love your help. Thanks for the great videos.
wow very old cube. can we plz pray for connor johnson who got an ocr 1.02 pyra single today at nz nats but it was an apparent mis-scramble and we need to wait to hear from the delegates to see if this solve will be disqualified. LETS GO CONNOR!!
What would have been interesting is for you to have attempted the solve using 1980s techniques. I think you may very well have got a faster time because, as I understand it, the modern speed techniques rely heavily on finger tricks which you cannot perform with that old style cube - it's why you got bogged down, while Mingh Thai just breezed through it in a workman-like way. 😄
HOW THE HELL AM I THIS EARLY TO A VID?!!?!?! I MEAN 20 MINS AFTER POST also, tingman love your vids! Ive Got One Of Your Signed Cube Covers! Huh? I Swear I just Heard Something Up There. * Sigh. * Am I Already Going Crazy?
I previously had a Rubiks cube which felt really good on rotation as it had a gear moving sound. however one day one kid who came to my house threw it and broke it. I got another Rubiks cube after that but the rotation movement was not that satisfactory and did not match the one I had before (the new one felt too plasticy) Any idea if the mechanism has changed recently.
Where are you getting them from? The US? I got mine in 1980 (maybe 1981?) in Australia and it came in a clear plastic cylinder. It didn't have "original" written on the package and it definitely didn't include a solution. A few people published books with solutions shortly after and I learned from one of those.
This is a much newer version of the packaging. The original version was a blue cardboard box with the cube printed on it, then later version was the plastic cylinder, both of these didn't come with instructions. Then later this big display box with instructions came out.
I actually found one of these at a retro games store a few years ago. For some reason, I still haven't opened me. I guess I don't "feel worthy" of it yet.
You just need the same lube I used in 1981 when I got just about the luckiest solve of 32 sec! I was given an RC in, I think, 1979 for Christmas but it was likely 1980 in reality... I still have it somewhere about as I don't think that I ever threw it away - most of its stickers came off so I painted them on instead! I worked out how to do it myself, and by the end of 1981 I was usually under 1 mins! Hmmm... to think that I have been cubing some 5 years longer than you have been alive! And a shout out for my great nephew who is now subbing 15 sec and consistently under 20! Well done Neil D! oh... the lube was of course... Vaseline!
How did you get an original with that color scheme. I thought that white and blue were always opposites on the originals. Every one I had as a kid was always white/blue, orange/red, green/yellow.
3 billion or 43 quintillion, that's an easy mistake to make. I guess math worked a bit differently in the 80s. And I love that I "occasionally" use air quotes shirt. PS: You missed putting the link to Owens very cool cube stands in the description.
Yeah i think the 2nd cube you got was both restickered and resealed the color scheme is off. white was supposed to be next to yellow and red and orange green was next to blue amd red and orange were opposite. 😢
Do you have images/scans of the instruction booklet. The one that has sort of levels. Solve one side, you are good (or some sort of title), Solve 2 sides, you are very good (or some other title) solve for all corners your are a Master, and solve the whole cube, you are a Cubist. Also as a note, if I remember well, at the time, knockoff cubes had a different color scheme to bypass copyrights the Ideal had at the time.
I forgot, my original Rubik's Cube had a different color scheme. blue opposite white, green opposite yellow, and orange opposite red. The same as the 2x2 Rubik's Ice Cube (transparent 2x2x2 cube)
Dear, Tingman, is it okay if you visit Singapore for the Feb 2nd Rubik's cube comp? I'm a big fan and I would like to meet you in person. PS, it's my first comp. Sincerely, Aythaan
Hi Aythaan, thanks for your comment! I won't be able to attend that competition unfortunately but I hope that it's a good event for you! All the best! Tingman.
i really really want to see, how Feliks Zemdegs, Max, Matty, Tymon, Yiheng, Mats Valk, and other speedcube in WCA solve 3x3 cube with this rubiks.. Yes, OLD RUBIK'S
I guess that’s why they switched to that tube shape packaging a bit later. Have some vintage Rubiks Cubes myself. The vintage 2x2 took me by surprise. It truly is 3x3 little brother. Little in the sense of you get your baby brother when you are about 5 years old already. Also got my hands on a soviet era 3x3 cube sold in hungary back then. It’s a bit smaller too - about the size of modern days YJ Mini 3x3. But the turning was really good right out of the box. Actually it was just a bandolier. A bit of Liqui Moly Silicone spray and some time turning it in all directions improved the situation even a bit more. Still some force required when turning but it won’t break your fingers anymore. It is not as smooth as the Gan/Rubiks Co-op cube but close enough.
I will ask Guus what version was used, for sure it was not the US version you showed which is not the best quality, most likely it was the Rubik Studio Hungary version, they where must better
Why was Sweden the only country to send a camera team to the first competition? Insane that a small country like Sweden did go to the first WM and no other countrys!
I still have my original Rubik's Cube from back in 1980-81. I was ten! Yes I could solve it back then, albeit much slower. 👍
