During the year 2007 US officially ended monetary support and military aid for the Sri Lankan government as Amnesty and UNHRC and CIA found out about the increasing human rights violations by the Sri Lankan government.
This left a large financial vaccum for the Sri Lankan government whose sole intention was to do a war against the Thamizh people and the LTTE.
The LTTE agreed voluntarily for peace process from 2000s to 2006s and had a chance to resolve the conflict peacefully with recognition of a autonomous state and end of armed conflicts. Then in 2005 Rajapaksha was elected and his sole selling point was miltary option.
With US aid gone
This is where the Chinese came into picture.
Trying to secure a strong ally in South Asia and also as means of bypassing India in economic trade route,
China offered SL Government with 75 million USD worth weapons equipments, provided 4 fighter jets and 500million USD in aid and 15million USD worth artillery equipment and used its VETO power in the UN to keep it from intervening with Sri Lankan civil war and addressing the forced killings cease fire violations, mass rapes and mass killings of both civilians and POWs, and every other crime committed.
this is the move that cemented China in Sri Lanka.
China has safeguarded all members of Rajapaksha family and military men from international persecution and has showered political elites with money and has been providing weapons, equipments and other aids. In return of all the debts that Rajapaksha regime acquired from China and building the Souther Port which is a crucial element in the belt and road initiative.
This is also why Gotabahya Rajapaksha got reelected as PRC directly funded the election expenses and such in return for debt bonds and more contracts for chinese investors and more secure power against India in the evolving conflict.
If Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam were two states China couldn't have entered this land or the political picture. Through the guise of unity history is repeating itself.
The same as how Nayakka Kandyan King sold the country to the British along with the Jaffna kingdom who fought till the whole royal dynasty got killed by the british, the country is being sold again behind all of our backs.
