It's just the difficulty setting, Practice mode is essentially easy difficulty. More health pickups, enemies do less damage to you, less enemies (in some areas). Once thing I failed to point out is that in addition to all that, in some stages, like the Genie level, the Genie hand platforms shrink and grow in size, so you have to sit and wait for them to get big before you can jump on them. That makes the higher difficulty modes (normal and difficult) longer runs, unless someone can consistently pull off the stage 5 jump boost to completely skip the boss fight where you run back and forth swinging your sword.

This was the first game I had for my Megadrive. I always got stuck on the level before the carpet ride.
