    Best part....have FUN with your dog while training. Please never punish the dog for doing something “wrong”. I come across too many people who tell me they beat their dog if it does something wrong. Saddens me because dogs just want to please their humans and it is not the dogs fault that the owner is inept at training with positive reinforcement. Dobes especially are very sensitive.

      Have fun with your dog - ALWAYS ! Your words are perfect ! As we say in England, (and I'm sure it's the same everywhere else) if there's a problem with the dog, have a look at the human on other end of the lead, then you'll find the problem.

      Great point Suzanne. Man I wish I added something like that to this video. Honestly I kept watching the clock and saw the video getting up to like 15 minutes in length so I started trying to slim down the length as much as possible. So some important things (like what you mentioned) didn't make it in. But that is really important and I'm glad you posted that here to reinforce that. Thank you!

      Doberman Planet Your welcome. Was not trying to call you out on not mentioning it. Just frustrated with irresponsible owners who ruin or just plain confuse wonderful animals. It happens more than one would think. Dobes especially get a bad rap....lack of good positive training compounds the negative image. Thanks for a wonderful channel. Can’t get enough of All Dobermans cause I adore mine so much.

      My dad used to push my puppy’s face into her pee if she peed inside. He’d also hit her and I honestly got really scared, especially considering that she is like my child to me, and a mom at the same time. Luckily not so much anymore.

    I grew up in the fifties with a Doberman in my family. I am now 73 years old and have rescued an 18 month old male, not because I wanted another doberman after owning five in the past but due to the fact that he ws left out on a dog run and ignored by his owners. I am very aware of the traits of these wonderful dogs but still enjoy your take on their training and crazy antics. Keep up the good work.

    This video is 3 years old, the information is still good! I used to obedience train dogs one on one along with their owners. It's been awhile. Many years, lol.
    My baby, PJ, was whelped December 17, 2023. I met his sire, dam & 11 siblings. All are great dogs!
    I brought him home on March 8, 2024. It's barely been a week, that's all it took to fall in love with this great puppy.
    He is already mostly potty trained & knows the "wait" command. I make sure that when going through a door, I go first, hand signal & say "wait". Once I am through the door, I say, "come" along with a hand gesture to come to me.
    I taught him to not jump up on me, he learned that so quick, less than 2 hours!
    He is still very young, I'll do more learning of commands in a few days or a week. He learns so quickly!

    Thank you so much for these videos. I’ve just found your channel. Discovered it first from reading your articles on your website. We had our first Doberman, Goose. He was the best dog ever. He died very recently and my heart is just broken! We are bringing home our new puppy in a few weeks. I can tell you that our Goose was so in tune with our feelings. I had a very bad thing happen to me one day at a medical appointment & when I came home he literally took care of me. He immediately sounded something wasn’t right & he sat with me in the most loving way for hours. This video has given us some good reminders of how to ensure success for our new little guy, Bo and us. I firmly believe that success of the dog is equal to success of the owners. I’m going to watch more of your videos to refresh & get some new ideas.

    Perfect information. Dobermans are the best way to show human kind and teach patience. They are built more human like. True friends. Took my daisy to the park today. Toddler's

    • @matthewpetta3108
      @matthewpetta3108 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toddler's, parents, and children are amazed by her love. That is the raising. Dobies require 90% love, actual verbal communication/affection. 10 % is what they are meant to do based on breed. The later is not even a training thing. They will protect you and your young ones regardless. The work is always loving and teaching your dobie at home. Dobermans are the most worth while challenge. Not for all. Dobermans are not lazy.

      I'm in your exact situation right now! (a year after you posted this) Though my puppy might be born tomorrow(!!) so he won't be coming home for a couple of months still. I'm so so so excited and happy and I'm also very nervous. Like you described, for me this is my first puppy all on my own and although I grew up my whole life with large breed dogs (100+ lbs, athletic etc) this will be my first Doberman. I've done a lot of research and was serious with my approach to finding the breed I think will be the best fit for me, but I expect raising a puppy to be stressful and exhausting, so trying to learn and prepare all I can ahead of time so that we are set up for great success together. Hope your first year with your baby girl has been wonderful, all the best ❤️

    Great overview of how to train a puppy

  • @georgegoertzen4723
    @georgegoertzen4723 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One thing I found that helped when training puppies was to use a slang version of the command I was working on until they got it close to what I needed in an obedience trial (also used the hand signals that would be used in the Utility Dog Signal exercise). As an example, when they were just starting out or 8 weeks of age, I would use 'kommere' instead of 'come' until they were doing it reliably at about 3 months when I would begin to change it to 'come'. 'Kommere' could be repeated multiple times with lots of praise and treats and they could mosey on over and stop to sniff something interesting on the way and still get rewarded when they finally got to me but as it evolved into ' Rover, come', it was expected to be on the first command and finish with a snappy sit in front. 'Kommere' would still be used throughout the life of the dog at a dog park or when it was just a friendly stroll through the woods and I wanted them to leave what they were doing and keep up, but it didn't needed to be a precise sit in front, just come near enough to pet on the head. 'Lessgo' would be walk along with me or near enough (stopping to sniff or pee or just be a dog was okay). Another 'lessgo' if they got too interested in a mouse hole or pee post and were getting left behind rather than a 'Heel' where they had to maintain their position at my left knee. Watch the Westminister Master Class of obedience. I've never seen AKC obedience trial where the handler is completely silent and limited to hand signals like the CKC UD titled signal test, but you must have something similar. If you know what the standard signals are, you can incorporate them into your training now, although as long as the signal you use is not exaggerated and you return your arm immediately to your side, you can use any signal you want. Meats was trained to drop 'dead' - kick his legs out and drop on his side, often sliding for good measure, on recall if you pointed your finger at him and shot him, but if I just raised my arm over my head and dropped it, he would drop into a ready down and wait for the recall sidnal again to finish the exercise. That 'Down on Recall' should be taught to every dog! It's saved at least one of my dogs when my son called his dog home from a field across the road. A 'hotrod' driver turned on to the street as the dog was coming. Quick thinking on my son's part dropped the dog on the other side of the road just in time to let the speeding car pass. I often thought it should be part of first level obedience training - even if a verbal command is used with the arm signal.

    Now my Doberman is 3 years old, when he was a puppy it was pretty challenging to train him. I followed the same method, as you had shown. Now, he understands 95% whatever I speak😂😂

    Love this. I used all with my Dobie. I used "Don't Touch" then "take it". Also " Take a Break" for release but all similar to yours. My Dobie were so easy to train. They want to please. Best breed.

    This was helpful I have a 7 month old Doberman he is a struggle on command he is really energetic

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad! Yeah that energy will lead to them getting distracted SUPER easy. Try and wear him out with some exercise first, and then practice in a really boring environment.
