We laid my oldest sons Godfather to rest last weekend....someone had posted a video of him singing this song on his memorial page...then they played it at the funeral and we all lost it....he was singing it to his best friend because he left behind a son.....Rest in Eternal Peace Doug!
this song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it... this is exactly the type of sittuation I am faced with every day. My husband was diagnosed with the same heart condition that his father died from. There is no cure and a high rate of sudden death that comes with it. We have 3 children and I pray everyday that my husband does not leave us for a long long time...
im a huge hip hop head, in fact i dont even really like country. But its songs like this one that make you appreciate it. beautiful song, quit ranting about the military and what we dont appreciate. it has nothing to do with this song. just be proud your a part of this great country.
I had to have this conversation with my daughter before she deployed to Iraq 2008 and now she is in Afghanistan. I have her three sons 16, 14 and 9 years old, while she is gone for over a year.( single mom) I have always prided myself that we could say anything to each other. But this was conversation so hard! The video and song are amazing. Thank you for writing it and sharing it.
I remember this song appearing while my father was fighting against stage four melanoma. In case anyone doesn’t know what that means. It means the doctor just tells you “get your affairs in order before the end of the year” they seriously all said that it would be incredible if he made it to Christmas. Dad is still here. Over a dozen surgeries later and 2 years of chemo. That man really is my Superman. If I am seen as even a quarter of what he is in the eyes of my nieces and nephews then I will die happy.
Country music's great strength was songs like this -- a song about real things that happen in people's real lives. Maybe music like this will come back someday. I do wish the video weren't so bleak, though. The song isn't dark, it's just real.
and welcome home its good to have you back where you belong. you fought hard for this land you love and i thank you for all of it. im proud to call you one of our own.
First time hearing this song made me tear up. Thinking back to when I used to do work around the house with my old man and wrestle and lots more of other fun stuff a kid would do with his dad, all before he was diagnosed with ALS. Coming up on 11 years since he's been diagnosed sure has been a journey and now that his voice is going it makes it harder. To any one that takes the time to read this appreciate the time with loved ones you have, you'll never regret it I promise.
God love you. It never gets easier does it? Lost my dad to prostate cancer 3 years ago. When you have the absolute best father you could possibly ask for, there is no replacing that... Leaves a great big hole. ❤🙏
This is one of the most amazing darrell worley songs, It has so much truth and emotion to it..he is so good at writing these kind of songs. so down to earth about it, it will never get old.
I listen to this song a lot because I'm always thinking about my dad he's 54 and has a lot of health issues and I don't know what I would do without him I hang out with him as much as I can
My brother is getting ready to Re-deploy to Afganistan for his 6th tour, the area he is going to the last unit didn't make it out alive, and when he came by to see my and my son( we did a late 13 bday for my son so my brother could be there with us) he asked to go out for a drink after- and this song went thru my head instantly.. And he DID say these words" Jen, IF SOMETHING SHOULD HAPPEN, tell my 3 kids about me".. I hope HE lives until he is 80, and knows how much I love & respect him...
This song always gets to me. My friend told me that if something should happen to him when we went to iraq to look after his little girl making me the Godfather and now here I am looking after his little girl. I miss him so much we were like brothers grew up since kindergarden. I hope I can do as good a job as he did with his daughter. 82nd airborne hooah.
im only 20 years old but have to say this song hits home, i lost my best friend of 16years when i was in high school to cancer, now my other good buddy is heading overseas. god bless him and send the rest of our troops home save.
omg i went through this earlier when i had an unknown mass on my abdomen, crying to my mom and dad saying ''if something should happen to me, where will you two be?'' now i realize God's got this!
this song speaks so true to me and my best friend tommy, he had liver cancer and they went in to remove it. he wanted me and my wife to take care of his daughter and son and wife if somethin should happen. luckily they caught it in time and was able to remove it in time. love ya tommy. your friendship means so much to me. always there. and dont forget, friends come and go but best friends are there till the end
I understand people are scrared of what they dont know! True story cannabis oil saved my wife's mother! The Lord put it here! just saying THANK YOU LORD! Radiation and kemo doesn't do the same.people do some research! I've lost alot to cancer. Trying to help thats all God bless!
I'm in the army now and thanks for the kind words, it gets lonely and you dont know how often this song runs through my head... but someone's got to do it and i'm glad its me
Remember, you don't always know. It just happens. I was on a Marathon, mile 4 I fell dead. Dead as a door nail. Two Nurses running behind me, running behind not in front of me. Stopped, gave CPR and saved my life. 6 years ago I suffered a Cardiac Arrest. Where would I be if not for them? Buried! It's time to pray everyday. You don't always know. Great song.
This is what I told my brother A.J to tell my wife when I went to Iraq. The whole time I was thinking of the worst. I just didn't want my new born not knowing who his father was.
I'm 17 and got diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma the other day. I'm scared. But if something should happen, tell my grandma she'll always be my role model. Tell my older brother that he was always my hero for fighting for our country. And tell my best friend to never give up and that she can be anything she wants to be.
funny how when I had to have my hernia operation i felt the same way, it's amazing how you could be healthy one day and sick as a dog the next or maybe even pass away.

I’ve been looking for this song for so long. I thought it was a song about a guy going to war (it’s been that long since I heard it) I’m happy I found it. Thank you

This song is about an appreciation for life. Read what's in the lyrics. Don't put a military connection in when there is not. Darryl Worley did an amazing song about 9/11, but his career has been so much more than just one song. This song and "I Miss My Friend", IMHO, are his shining achievements. I'm not saying military shoutouts in country music aren't key and important, but one is not warranted here. Nothing in this song suggests the singer is a soldier. He is a husband and father and facing an illness. Clearly outlined in the lyrics. Anyone who thinks this is a military song clearly isn't listening.
I remember thanking I was never coming home from Iraq somehow I made it my friend died it just gets me emotional I watched and heard the bullets dodge me and he gets killed. This is the BEST Darryl Worley video hands down! This always gives me goosebumps when I hear this song. Thanks for sharing!
His songs are always very heart felt and meaningful. Great baritone voice. He’s really a significant southern artist.

Jeff Hale ever hear of Camp Leguene? Yeah. It's got a minor military connection.
My father is a veteran, so I very well know what Camp Leguene is. A MINOR military connection is all it has. It's not the focus of the song.
