@outdoorbros_ My family and I opened a sporting goods shop when I was 12. We just had our 30th anniversary. I grew up playing and selling this stuff. Lol. It's something I really enjoy and have been blessed to be a part of. So yeah, I had some sweet bearings. Which I did work for but back in the day there were some freebies... I actually met Chris Farley when I was out at a Rollerblade convention in Chicago with my family back in 96. He was at the Second City Comedy Club one night and was amazing to us. Side story....I'm on my morning bike ride now with my Yeti.
Spinning the wheels on empty, which we all do :-), is not a valid test as the quality of the bearings is understood on load. And actually, if you run your wheels tubeless, the sealant will drag that test as the liquid will put a force in the bottom part of the tyre. Try to do that test with the wheel parallel to the floor, the wheels will spin for longer ;-) I do agree, probably for the average rider the marginal gains are not justified in terms of their price, but yes, you can notice the difference. I've been using ceramic bearings in my hubs for the last 10 years and the smooth/fast rolling sensation is great (and there will be a little bit of placebo effect anyway). Just purchased a new set of wheels with Dt180, and OMG, is so pleasant rolling on those hubs :-) Regards from Spain, cheers!
I noticed you had the GoodYear F1 tyre on the Aethos. I have the same set, too, and installed in my CLX50 with Ceramic, and those tyres are horrible. The way you explained how slow you felt was the same for me. I tried it on a few wheels and bikes, and at the end, it was those Goodyear F1 tyres holding the speed down. They felt sluggish, like I was riding with spongy wheels. But now, I know why they were on special and will never buy them again. I have installed the F1s on my commute bike only, and it will not go on my high-performance bikes such as my s-works.
Great feedback! Great video as well! I have the ENVE SES 5.6 and the AR 4.5 both with ENVE Alloy hubs. I have the Roval CLX64 on the Venge and all 3 seems fast. Would be interesting to compare. Hard to tell as they are on all different bikes. Never thought of changing out the wheel bearings. One note is to compare the amount of factory grease that’s on the bearings/hub. That can change perceived speed value and also impact sound.

Comparisons are quite hard with so many other factors at play, I had CS bearings in my CLX 50’s originally (since replaced via service) and they felt great but I think this was the overall wheelset feel. I also now have CLX rapides and struggle to feel a difference but the gap between tests has been too long. They’re both just excellent wheelsets. Thanks for watching! It's hard to compare wheel sets as it seems advancements can be made elsewhere that also equal speed/decreased rolling resistance. I guess that's why we have computers to spit out data and tell us where the marginal gains lie.
Wait until the ceramic balls cut a groove into the softer steel races (which will actually not take a long time) and they will be slower than steel bearings.
I’m wondering if their coated bearing races help with this. They do offer a lifetime warranty on all their coated bearings, fwiw. I only have purchased their coated bearings and haven’t felt any issues with them.
Good call....spend the time and money on training first (trainer, yoga , cross training with weights etc). BTW: The Aethos is now in the garage based largely on your reviews. Looking forward to more content

Delayed two years to watch this video and luckily we always have cheaper alternatives to the overpriced Ceramic Speed components. I ordered ceramic bearings on AliExpress for EVERY part of my bike (bottom bracket, pulley wheels, freehub, cubes) and I spent a fraction of what Ceramic Speed charge for 2 pairs of bearings. All of them sealed and wonderfully finished. The felling of speed and the overal performance skyrocketed.

Thanks for the pro tip! I tracked down the Russian Osmium BAM grease and it has changed my life- I’m +500 watts and nearly have the Tron bike on Zwift. Amazing.

I would have killed for Abec 9 bearings when I played roller hockey. I don't think I ever got above Abec 3.

Way too super expensive but if you got the cash, fun stuff!! I bought my Roval wheels for $2,200 5 yrs ago and they are well worth the price!!
