I've wanted to play hockey since I was a kid but it was always too expensive and time consuming to play in the UK, but since moving to the Netherlands and living in a country that actively loves skating, (mainly ice speed skating but who cares) I've had more and more of an itch for it, watching your videos has been great to see and a big inspiration, it has always been a bit intimidating to go and start at a later age (29) but seeing you has made me really go all in and make it happen. I will start with roller hockey while I try and find more time for practicing on the ice this winter, but I hope to make it to at least a training session before the end of next year. Thanks again for the videos! And keep it up!
Man this is so awesome, thank you so much for sharing your story! Roller is a great place to start given you can just go skate anywhere with concrete! Wishing you the best of luck and I wanna hear updates so please lmk how it goes!
Hah I'm in the same boat, I played field hockey for 10 years when I was younger (I'm 21 now) and theres nowhere close to me where I can play Ice Hockey :(
I randomly found your videos in my feed one day and watched all your short videos in a few days. Following your journey has also inspired me to start playing soccer again after a 10 year hiatus. My first two times of playing pick up soccer against a bunch of 20-25 years old was an absolute train wreck. As embarrassed and disappointed as I was about how I played I still thought I did a few good things out there. And proud to say I don't care if I play terrible because I have really enjoying the journey not the destination. Keep up the good work!
Dude that's awesome man! I actually grew up with soccer being my main sport, played throughout high school and it was all I cared about. After I graduated though I stopped playing and picking up hockey a few years after was the best thing I ever did!
Kazxi I’m a huge ice hockey fan not as much as a roller hockey but I love both!!! A little tip for stopping is instead coming in at an angle to turn then stop. Go in put the first foot a bit lower that your back foot. Your back foot will give support. And just to start slightly glide into it kinda the as u get better u can go faster with the stops!!!
I'm 13 and there are no rinks anywhere near where I live so I'm practicing skating skills and hoping to move somewhere near an ice rink when I grow up. You're really inspiring, thank you!
Stopping on ice is way quicker on ice. It looks like your biggest problem was that you were trying to turn to stop (aka how you do it on roller) as opposed to doing a hockey stop. To get used to a hockey stop, I’d recommend standing still and focusing on scraping the ice with your inside edge, one foot at a time. Once you feel you can comfortably/confidently do this standing still, try it while moving very slowly. Just keep working at it until you feel like you can comfortably stop leaning onto both feet at once (your back leg should come forward a little bit so it looks like you’re taking a step). From then, it’s just a matter of doing it more and more and faster and faster till you’re a god at stopping! You got this dude!
as an in-line player, i did a lot of the same stuff you’re doing right now stopping wise, you don’t wanna do that bc you’ll eat it into the boards, i’d start by practicing shaving the ice with your skate and get a little bit of momentum going aka the plow sop
As someone that has played competitive roller hockey most of my life. I picked up Ice around 5 months ago. The hands, and the shot mostly transferred. Besides the difference in the weight of the puck of course. Certain things you have to be careful of because the puck is easier to get away from you. Then of course, the skating translates some. Stopping and what not of course did not. And you don’t really have to”edges” as such in inline. Still working on my edge work a lot. Also there is certain tropes I think a lot of inliners do (never stop just take wide circles, don’t pass as much as they should, and so on).
So when i wanted to start playing hockey i played Roller hockey first because the equipment was kinda expensive and i was not ready yet, and then i saw one of you videos and you inspire me! After that i started playing ice hockey and when i stepped on the ice i fell immediately because it was so slippery but it was fun and now im really good at ice hockey! Keep up to good work😂❤
i was born and rised in Scotland and still live here so i learned how to roller skate first due to Scotland not having the right facility's for ice hockey and some rinks here dont even let u play hockey at all, so playing roller was more accessible to me, and to answer your question of does it transfer, at least for me it did i found learning to roller skate first made it a lot easier when i did transfer to ice but it helped i was still very young when i made that transition
Kaxzi ur doing great especially since u play roller way more then ice! i started out playing roller and transitioned to ice and yes there are similarities but there are also differences too. A big one for me was getting an edge bc in roller u dont rly have an edge like when ur on a blade in ice. Another thing was definitely stopping, which is different bc in roller u powerslide most of the time and in ice u rly want to keep ur feet lined up and on an edge. its definitely hard to get used too but once u get the hang of it its not too bad. I would recommend just watching some videos and going to open skates at a local ice rink to practice. Keep it up kaz love the vids sm🔥🔥
i think the transition from roller to ice is harder than the other way round. back when i played ice hockey in my youth (2-3rd heighest tier in germany) we had 4 guys joining us who switched over from inline-skaterhockey (its like inline hockey, but instead of a puck you use a ball and bodychecks are allowed, way more popular over here than the puck version), with 2 of them playing for the youth national team, and they did struggle quite a bit in the beginning. at one point, me and a couple of guys decided to give inline-skaterhockey a try for summer and did a tryout at a first tier club and they immediately offered us spots.
For stopping I would recommend having one skate on the ground and the the other like a penny of a size above the ground I am a goalie and your one of my favorite creators much love from the Iowa hockey community
Played roller my whole life, transitioned to ice too last year, and I'm still tryna figure things out!! Soo many variables that arr the same but different!! Either way, loving the process!! Game 2 of 2 this week in a few hours at 830!! tonight!!
Yeah man, I started out playing roller hockey and played that for years and got pretty decent. I went and played at TORHS and NARCh. Then I made the switch to ice. That was tough. Stopping was a big issue. With Ice it is more of a lean and catch the right angle of your edge. Roller it's more a sharp turn and hold. Then for roller, you have bearings, softness of the wheels...all makes a difference. Ice you have shape of your blade(rounded or more flat), sharpness of your blade. It all makes a big difference. The muscles are pretty much the same though.
I play ice hockey a LOT and your accuracy is really good man. Double bar downs at the start were crazy. Also, a tip for stopping is to turn your hips faster 90 degrees. I love what you’re doing man and keep it up. I’ve watched a lot of your earlier content and your progress is unreal. One last thing. Which stick do you prefer: the Bauer nexus tracer or the Bauer twitch and why.
Hey thanks so much dude and thank you for the advice. Honestly I love both the Tracer and the Twitch! Looks wise I honestly like the Tracer more, but feel I like the Twitch better, both great options!
I found this video in my recommended, and as a roller hockey player turned ice leaguer, i'm relieved to see its not just me dealing with the transition. I even bought marsblades and xeno pucks to try to mimic training on ice, but the skating is so much different! I can totally get up to speed but stopping is still my biggest feat. I still rely on the ol' T stop, but man is it fun basically learning the game again. I hope my winter league (that starts next week!) is a blast. Thanks for the vid!
hey man! one tip i have for ice hockey is that when you're stopping, its not a turn like roller. i saw you do it once but its more of just twisting your feet to the side. great job tho
Something I do to practice is doing edge work drill in rollerblades. It’s different but it makes a big enough difference to help onto the ice. It helps your overall skating and crossovers a ton. (Also don’t mind my name it’s my friends idea)
In short. Yes a lot translates but not everything. The edge work is something to get used to. Both are great. I find ice in general of the way the game is played more challenging. Roller is more open space more offensively based in my experience.
I would say if ur learning to play hockey, start off with ice, roller bladings easier than ice skating, if u know how to ice skate good, u probaly will be good at roller blading as well
For stoping your trying to turn then stop what you usually do for ice is once it’s ice you can shave it but be In control so shave like medium amount of effort then just go for it and push down into the ice
Stopping is the same motion but with a different part of the foot. You'll want to dig in more with your toes vs the heel of your foot. If you try to stop on the heel like a roller stop, you will slew foot every single time. It'll take some time, but trust me a lot of what you learn in Roller does apply to ice, but I would say easier. You have to push less to go fast, you can keep your momentum easier around corners, the puck never feels like you're dragging it with you, its gliding with you. Every time I see your videos I always think about making a video to help those that are transferring from roller to ice. I know exactly what you are going through my dude. And sometimes it can be highly frustrating, especially if you're a fluent roller player.
i noticed you trying to turn into a stop like roller but the technique is different. you have to stand flat on the blade which allows a slide despite your skates are pointed a different direction. then gradual pressure to the inside edge will bite into the ice and slow you. its a hard mechanic to learn but youll get it. the sweet spot between the inside and outside edge is tricky to find at first.
roller to ice is the scariest thing until like 7 months in. Then youll hop on roller skates and be like ahhhh. why cant i drift, pick up speed, or stop as easy.
You should look into getting marsblades for your roller hockey skates. They feel a lot more like ice and definitely helps the transition coming from roller to ice!
I recommend not even touching the pucks when you are out there. Just look up beginner edge drills and hammer those. I see so many beginners that don’t emphasize their skating and it stunts their progress so much
Awesome video! Just getting into adult beginner league! Your videos have been a huge inspiration since I’ve always watched hockey but never thought I could play it. From what I’ve seen it’s just preference , but where do you like to cut your stick (off skates) ? I got a second hand stick to start and feel it’s too short! Ordering a new one soon and would like to hear where you prefer it. Thanks Kazxi❤❤❤
yo i recently made the switch too just playing drop in games right now. i get what you're saying about it being slicker, sounds dumb cuz yea of course its ice, but everything moves faster and i had to improve my skating form quite a bit. good watch!
I rollerbladed one summer back in 2000 and I wore my rollerblades more than I did shoes. I have to say that summer I was never that good on a pair of skates in my lifetime.
When u stop ur kinda turning into which becomes inefficient in games try to shift the pressure to one foot and dig it in coach Jeremy has a video on it
Hey I'm 13F and love playing roller hockey. You are one of the creators that I watch and you help me out a lot. Thanks for everything
Dude that's so awesome man I love to hear it! Keep grinding!
@@Kazxi. thanks it means a lot
Looking forward to more ice hockey videos this winter!!
Yessir dude, can't wait to go play some pond hockey too!

Thanks so much!
Yo kazxi i met you at the avs game, i talked to you about sharing the same journey as you, keep up the work bro. Ice is so much fun
Let's go dude, great to finally meet you Quinn!
Keep pushing bro u got this
yooo im 14 and i started playing ice hockey last year. Been amazing to see myself grow alongisde you, although you are way better than me 💗💗
Let's go dude that's awesome, we're on this grind together!
I found this video in my recommended, and as a roller hockey player turned ice leaguer, i'm relieved to see its not just me dealing with the transition. Dude thanks for sharing! Happy to hear I’m not alone either haha! Cheers!
good job man been here since day one keep up da good work
Hey thank you so much!
pls make more content like this
I gotchu! 😁🙌 Really trying to focus on TH-cam this year!
hey man! one tip i have for ice hockey is that when you're stopping, its not a turn like roller. i saw you do it once but its more of just twisting your feet to the side. great job tho
Yeaaaah definitely gotta break that habit, think I need to watch some tutorials 😅
@ definitely practice your outside and inside edges too if you’re going to keep doing ice

As an ice hockey player learning to play roller hockey… stopping on ice feels so natural and it’s terrifying trying to stop on tile 😂
Hahaha that's so funny because I'm the exact opposite!
roller to ice is the scariest thing until like 7 months in. Then youll hop on roller skates and be like ahhhh. why cant i drift, pick up speed, or stop as easy.
Haha yeah the drifting is wild, not used to that at all 😂
No way I can stop on ice better then kaxzi that’s one thing off my bucket list
hahaha

I been here since your 1st month of playing, your doing amazing but when you stop on the ice you don’t want to stop like you do in roller
Hey thanks so much dude, yeah I gotta learn how to do it on ice, my roller habits were kicking in
It converts if you can skate well
I started on ice and then played roller for a summer most of it crossed over for me but stopping was difficult
I've been playing ice hockey for just over a year now, and stopping is quite a bit different on roller blades.
Awesome video! Just getting into adult beginner league! Your videos have been a huge inspiration since I’ve always watched hockey but never thought I could play it. When you stop it’s two feet not one like roller hockey
yo i recently made the switch too just playing drop in games right now. i get what you're saying about it being slicker, sounds dumb cuz yea of course its ice, but everything moves faster and i had to improve my skating form quite a bit. good watch!

Hey thanks Oscar, and thanks for watching the live premiere with me!😁🤝
When u stop ur kinda turning into which becomes inefficient in games try to shift the pressure to one foot and dig it in coach Jeremy has a video on it
Hockey is my favorite sport and I am learning to play roller I have played ice
Let's go dude!
Hey man i play ice hockey and i just want to let you know when you are skating push out instead of back😁
You should try Mars blades
When play roller
Heard good things about em but I love my Bauer Hyperlites!
You did so I started to play hockey
Let's go dude!!
How do you get the rink almost all to your self?
I just went in the middle of the day onna week day 🤷♀️
How did you learn to shoot? Its already better than mine
Repetition! Actually built out an area in my basement to work on my shot at home but I went to the Roller ODR alot to work on it
That’s one of my main rinks lol
It does but it doesn’t. I’m on ice game 10 myself. Still can’t stop.
haha same, I can agree, some skills definitely transfer but others not so much.
@ roller > ice
when u stop instead you shold jump into the stop
Unlike roller hockey when you want to stop don’t turn
Haha yeah I gotta work on that, it's all I know
Bro why do I wanna play him
🔥
I feel like going from ice to roller is easier than roller to ice
As a hockey player who’s played since the age of 4 your skates when stopping too dull. Get them sharpened
I played hockey for 2,567 days and 13 months and 19 days and 20 minutes I I can’t 0:11 0:12
yo dont pick your feet up as much also ddont do a roller stop
i wanna 1v1 you on ice, i think it would be fun
Can I have a stick please. Love your videos. Been watching you forever
Stop tuning on your edge when you try and hockey stop act like you are pivoting it stop half way
So should I be on one edge then or kind of on both?
Don’t roller stop! You’re going to break and ankle or leg. Better yet.. keep doing it, you’re gay
