The quote this rumor stems from suggested that the Phantom Thieves were gonna have a strategist character who played shogi, but it was too similar to Makoto so they didn't do it. They still had the idea of the shogi player being a side character though, and unused character designs, so they made Hifumi and made a 10 rank backstory for her. Her backstory is also somewhat similar to Haru because of the whole wealth and fame thing.
If there was gonna be a shogi player in the party, chances are it would have turned out very different than the Hifumi we know now.

Makoto's date in hawaii was the reason I ended up pursuing her. Before that I was just kind of doing my own thing and progressing relationships with everyone but never reaching the confession stage. This was all in my first playthrough. I even dodged the question about which kind of girl Joker likes. It was totally unexpected on my part. The way she approaches you and how that date goes is very natural and sweet, it's like she pursues you really and then the relationship just felt like a very natural progression towards romance after that.

That's what I really hate about all the "choose bros" options in the P5 games. Sometimes I'm not romancing anyone (or maybe your romance is locked behind the plot, like Haru or Sumi) and I just want to hang out with Ryuji (and hopefully Yusuke), but it just turns into "ha ha these losers have no girlfriends." If they won't let us romance our guy friends, they can at LEAST let us have fun hanging out with them...
Honestly as much as I love Ryuji I wished Yusuke was the one asking for /leading bro time. Ryuji only cares about girls while Yusuke gets into strange but fun situations which encapsulates what the “bro time” is meant to be about. Bros only, away from girls. Similarly to girl times.

Currently playing p5r for the first time and I was fully expecting to only have hanging out with the boys as an option cuz I was under the impression that you needed to be in a relationship to get the date and by this time I had only had ann at 9(friendzoned), makoto 5, kawakami 6, and kasumi at 5 so imagine my surprise when ann asked me who I liked and I choose smart and makoto invites me on a date
You need Makoto 5, Hifumi 5, dating Ann, dating Kawakami to get their invitations.

Man psyche is so strange. Most plp always choose Kawasami, or Makoto, or Takemi (sure she's not a option here). But Ann is like a regular hot and popular chick, something tells me that her not being popular had to be with the targeted audience of this game that "despises" popular gals. Sure Ann is not "popular" in her Japan school, but she certainly would be in the west.

Well, canonically speaking you’re suppose to be at confidant rank 5 with her when this happens, where as with Ann and Kawakami the prerequisite is that you’re already dating them.

@EZ 671 Indeed, Ann and Kawakami are only available if you romance them. The only ones that are available for confidant ranks are Hifumi and Makoto. I know its possible to romance Makoto at that point, but not sure about Hifumi though. But either way you do get the option for them if you don't want to hang out with Ryuji and Mishima.

Huh, I've played the game for the third time now and I had no idea you could get Hifumi on board as early as this trip. I guess I spread myself too thin with the leveling before.
I was sooo close to maxing kawakami's confidant before the trip 😵 (was my first playthrough)
Me and the boys hittin on chicks in Hawaii but failing miserably
Idk if it's just me but I like the idea that the Makoto route didn't feel as much of a date as the other ladies... The others feels like blatant dates while Makotos feels more like a friendly hangout with a chick who is clearly into you. I'm still on my first run and idk if I want romance her or Takemi, but that "date" being more ambiguous leaves some wiggle room. So either I won't feel like a cheater if I choose the doctor or that "date" in Hawaii plants the seeds for the relationship if I go with Makoto
Either way I wasn't gonna go simp and fail with the guys, I've never been a fan of the overdone and exaggerated perverted trope that plagues so many characters. It's one of the few things I actually dislike about Ryuji.
The reason Makoto is not romantic is because the game ackowledges that it's impossible to complete her confidant this early in the series

I feel so proud of myself for hanging out with the guys in the end. I don’t know why but their friendship gives me a whole sense of wholesome ;-; I’m not a kind of person who’s frantic about having special connection with your choice of girl (MAKOTO BEST GIRL FITE ME) so I chose the slowburn kind of pace. And I’d have to say, I’m satisfied on my first run.
(TAKEMI BEST GIRL I'LL THROW DOWN) But Makoto is a reasonably close second. Honestly, if Ryuji just calmed the hell down with his whole 'babehunting' schtick, hangouts with the boys would be perfectly tolerable for me, but as it stands I'd rather spend time with one of the ladies in Hawaii.

She's not default. I believe you have to get her to a certain level as I didn't get her my first playthrough

Not going to lie but I just recently started playing Royal. I found out about Persona through Smash then playing Strikers first. After watching this video through suspicion of there being other dates, I kinda feel feel Makoto is the canon choice. I am the work on yourself first type of guy so I was grinding Joker's social status while keeping the confidants a balance. Through this I've only gotten the Makoto and Ryuji texts. Being the person that goes by " the person that chase you is better than the person you chase" makes Makoto the Best waifu in my opinion.

Was expecting the Shrimp seller to go “What’s a chick like you hanging out with a Japanese fella like him?” to Ann, considering Ann looks more like an American girl.
I know it doesn’t work for her story but since she’s already here, it was a huge wasted opportunity for Atlus not to give us the option to spend time with Sumire, even if it’s just a friendly date. Seeing how she’d only be at rank 5 by this point, she’d still think she was Kasumi and the romance path with her would be available yet. Oh well...

Considering Kasumi was in Hawaii, would be nice if we could hang out with her on the beach though. Like, the requirement would be having Kasumi at 5 stars (which is totally possible by the Hawaii trip), or just telling her before Hawaii trip. Can imagine her text will be like this:

Since Kawakami and Ann only ask you out if you're already in a relationship, the date is going to be as steamy as possible from the get go.

@@ericbooker98 I think you need the rank 10 for the romantic date to appear (at least that was when I romanced Kawakami and I had her on rank 9 during the Hawaii trip and i got no message) I was suprised they gave Hifumi a little more time with you regardless if you have her at max rank and romanced or not.
The night before; the Phantom Thieves will ask you what type of girl you're interested in: Ann = beautiful, Makoto = intelligent, e.t.c. That choice will factor into who you can date the next day.

I didn’t have the option for Kawakami, but I probably would have picked her if I did. I had Ryuji and Makoto to pick from. Ryuji is probably my favorite character, but hitting on random girls I don’t know isn’t my thing. Makoto is one of my favorite characters, and one of the 3 I wanted to romance, so I went with her. I romanced Takemi in this playthrough, so I plan to play a second time, and romance either Makoto, or Kawakami

This is so weird, I have the highest confident level with Kawakami (I think it's level 8, when you receive the Mementos mission), level 4 with Togo and level 5 with Makoto and Ann (Makoto has a charm roadblock)... and I only received messages from Togo (surprisingly) and Makoto. No sign of Ann and Kawakami... wth, had to go with Makoto again, lol I emulated the original P5 ages ago, I don't intend to romance Kawakami, but it's so weird how the game "balanced" these outcomes, it's like the story purposely pushes Makoto as the "canon" love interest (she is the best love interest anyway, still, it's weird)
