I'm a New York born Puerto Rican and learned a BASIC STEP in the early 70's from dancers in the Bronx (El Condado de La Salsa). This BASIC STEP which became what people today call "on 2" is what I call mambo, period. I agree with you that it's also called "salsa" - but if someone asks me what kind of dance is that, I will not answer "Salsa" - if it's a mambo, I'm going to answer "that's a mambo" and if its a cha-cha, I will say "thats a cha-cha." These dances have a specific name.

I do not speak Spanish, but I can try to explain it in English real quick :) on1 = both the man and the lady break on the first beat (the break = change of direction). LA Style is danced on1, it is currently the most popular style of salsa dancing. on2 = both the man and the lady break on the second beat. NY Style (the most popular) is danced on2, but there are other styles such as Palladium/Puerto Rican2, and also Power2. Mambo is often associated to on2 salsa dancing.
It's a great song... call it a mambo or salsa, you can dance it on 1 or 2, who cares??? You can dance the same song different ways... it sounds like a mambo to me, but I've danced it as a salsa... just enjoy the music and have fun, it's not that big of a deal!! jeez lol
I don't understand the difference of dancing in 1 or dancing in 2, somebody could explained to my in eSpañol. porfavor!, gracias =) AND ... REALLY doesn't care if it call MAMBO or SALSA. It's good to know where came this music, and makes the people happy and feel alive. just that i think :) paz =peace felow`s
I call this particular dance song a "mambo" and it should be danced as such. The word "salsa" has become a derivative, for all latin dance music, it seems. I've heard people implying that cha-cha-cha is salsa, merengue is salsa, so on and so forth. During the Palladium Days a mambo was called a mambo, a cha-cha-cha was called just that, a cha-cha-cha. I know all about the dance on 1 & dance on 2. As long as dancers can differentiate the mambo from all the others dances it's all good.
I don’t know what the hell kind of dancing this is. It’s nothing but spinning and twirling. Corny moves they must of learned in a ballroom class. Not how we Salsa here in Spanish Harlem NYC.
salseli - the music itself is salsa. naming it "mambo" would just be incorrect... first the music, then the dance. and they are dancing salsa but on2 (NY style), but going into details - it's not mambo (try wikipedia for more results).
well - You said that. "mambo" as You call it - is salsa danced on2. and no, it's not legitimate - the real mambo is of only one origin - and it's cuban, not PR or NY, and it's older then "palladium days". besides - I saw those "on2 speciallists" dancing to latin jazz music, and this actually never hurts them to call it mambo which is NOT mambo.
tiemposssss que no volveran saludes a la gente de columbia y baltic en brooklyn y a my famili y mis hijos desde palmira valle colombiaaaaa i love you

Dance that MAMBO - still can't figure why they call this dance salsa, when in fact it's really a mambo you're dancing.
YUMMMYYYY

Salsa on 2 is Mambo. People just call everything Salsa now.

@slissaur In fact, it very well may be that this is a guaracha -- other comments are welcomed.
