He was literally knocking puss-in-boots from his "high horse". He wasn't a villain. He humbled puss in boots. As soon as he saw that, he withdrew his attack. Very well designed character.

And death is commonly called the "grim reaper". But no, they are 100% shotels, especially when he combined them to form a 2handed weapon. Shotels were designed to be interlocked and connected to fight mounted units. They were curved to go around the guard of the mounted soldier.
