@Dan-cl3md Agreed! If listening only, I prefer the Anthology version because of the musicianship. If I'm watching the film, the soundtrack version works because the extra dubs and such blend with the animation quite well.
I find it inherently silly to call _any_ Beatles' song underrated tbh. Even the most "underrated" Beatles' songs are still widely recognized and appreciated by millions and millions of people. ...but Bulldog is easily one of my favorite Beatles' songs and always has been. I think it would have gotten way more attention if it were on a proper album instead of a soundtrack.
@mariomartellacci9462 I understand what you mean. But JUST SO YOU KNOW... "Hey Bulldog " was released as a 45 in MANY countries as the A SIDE... and it was also released as a B-side to " All together now". Go look at DISCOGS. You'll learn a lot about the rest of the world. Other countries have better taste than Americans sometimes. This is one of those times. To add... hey Bulldog has become much more famous in the last 20 years. I don't think it's "underrated". It definitely USED TO BE. From 1968 to 2000. Overlooked and underrated. Not now though.
Yep. I agree with John that it should have been the A-side of a single. It didn't have to replace Lady Madonna. They could have held onto it for a couple months and released it as a different single with It's All Too Much as the B-side. That would have been a great single! Better than Lady Madonna/The Inner Light. The Beatles only had two singles in 1968. They could have released Lady Madonna in April, Hey Bulldog in July, and then released Hey Jude in October instead of August. Hey Bulldog would be another number 1 for them. This is all just my opinion of course. The Beatles did all right regardless.
Have you ever heard Journey's cover? It's on the "Look Into The Future" record. It's really great. I always enjoyed that they wanted to play that song, their only cover. They played it live quite a bit too 1976 - 80.
For all you guitar hero types out there (like me), check out the studio & live cover versions of this track by Steve Hillage, 1970s UK psych/prog guitarist/artist. He also covered "Getting Better" and (the non-Beatles track) "Not Fade Away". 🎸
I was lucky enough to see every Beatles movie on the big screen in 1971 when I was about 9 years old. There was a theater that ran Sunday matinees where you could watch several movies for one price, and they featured all the Beatles movies one Sunday. It made a huge impression on me that lasts even to this day.
It ticks me off how so many people' shortchange and trivialize "It's All Too Much", "Only a Northern Song" and "Blue Jay Way". I've loved them since I first heard them decades ago.
It's a great song...given more time & attention it could easily have been a widely recognized Beatle classic. One thing though...the guitar is definitely not John Lennon. I don't know if it's McCartney, Harrison or a special guest like Brian Jones or someone but just as the lineup of guitars on You Never Give Me Your Money is more complicated than The Beatles Bible indicates. This song requires some investigation and the kind of review that has escaped it because the post pepper recording era is not well represented in Beatle lore or releases and the lack of any super deluxe treatment leaves this song "orphaned".
@@melamineflorentine8134The engineers in the booth should have been logging who played what, and which instruments were used in these sessions. They had to know by 1968 that people would want to know later on. I would have taken notes on who played each instrument, the type of instrument, which amps were used, mics used, ect. Someone could have made millions on a book if they had that information written down.
George's songs often reward repeated listening more than the readily digestible tracks. It may not have impressed in demo form, but fully produced, "Northern Song" is deeply intriguing.

Then in 1970,the original project would then be converted from a television special to a major motion picture. And, the title would be changed from “Get Back” to “Let It Be.”Around this time, the Beatles would break up, and the rest is history!!!

Great presentation! It was great seeing it on the big screen later on back when indie theaters had midnight movie madness. They would play Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine and many others back when Rocky Horror was large. The good days.

I was a child when I first heard it. I loved it. Now as an adult I still love it and glad Ringo sang it. As far as the animated movie it is awesome. I never tire of it. But with that said I am disappointed the Beatles didn't voice over their own characters. They were SO perfect for that as well as the animated TV series. But, it is what it is, still Beatles related so I still love it. Just not as much.
I liked the orchestral & non-Beatle music on "Hard Day's Night" & "Yellow Submarine" vinyls & was disappointed that it wasn't included on the CD's. Is any of this music available on CD?
Only a Northern Song is pure genius. George was away ahead of his time. The inclusion of ‘the devil’s triad’ is inspired. Some people still don’t appreciate the ironic lyrics and the beauty of the chords and melody. George was royally ripped off, as was Ringo. ‘Second Class Beatles’
Can't believe Giles actually convinced Dhani & Olivia that OANS should be left out of the Super Deluxe of Pepper in 2017 then let 2018 and the 4k yellow sub re-release pass with no companion audio like a surround release of the Yellow Submarine Songtrack from 1999. Would have been a great showcase for these songs.
‘It’s All too Much’ has a beautiful melody and gorgeous sonic treatments, akin to Hendrix’s psychedelic textures. At the time, ‘sonics’ in music weren’t respected as important; nobody understood what the Beatles were doing with their psychedelic music. Listen to a genre called shoegaze, if you want to hear what it became later. The Beatles psychedelic music was an important step toward great albums like ‘The Soft Bulletin’ by Flaming Lips, even Radiohead’s albums owe some debt. The chorus chords of ‘Only a Northern Song’ are absolutely brilliant. The ‘it doesn’t really matter’ part. That song is underrated. Also. Thank you for not taking a self-righteous stand against marijuana, as with some other channels. Much of the best music of the 20th century was written under the influence of marijuana. Jazz, early rock, even modern classical. I’m not a big drinker, smoker, or drug user. Have seen relatives destroyed by alcohol. But i do think ‘square’ society simply has no idea where great music comes from; it comes from the soul, the heart, the gut. And as it happens, a lot of musicians feel more connected to these things while smoking.
No way is that Lennon on guitar though. They really need to investigate and review the story on this song. Whoever played lead guitar on this SHOULD be bragging on this relentlessly but if Lennon or McCartney did they never even bring up this song. Giles needs to review this material and provide a definitive review.
I thought Paul doing dog bark impressions for Hey Bulldog was inspired by actor Donald Sutherland doing dog impressions in the Dirty Dozen film in the 1960s. Turns out it was actually John saying “you got any more? “ the Beatles are truly innovation in modern music
In this video, I noticed a photo of the Beatles that I remember was from the Beatles Monthly magazine, circa 1965. George was playing a Burns bass. Can’t bet on it, but I think that was a photo from the paperback writer and Rain recording. Yellow Submarine was recorded in 1966. The animation was an afterthought in 1968.
I guess I'm a little confused with the title of this video. All those songs were not recorded for Yellow Submarine...they were already done on previous works which were either unreleased or from other albums and singles. The Beatles wanted little to do with this film, not even providing the voices. They just agreed to sit back and (hopefully) make money off their names and songs with very little effort on their part.
Some of the songs were created for other projects; some of them were made specifically for it. It’s an official Beatles album. Also, the film was an important and iconic part of the Beatles' career.
Its the story of how the album was recorded, song by song. That is what it purports to be, and that is what it is. A full account of the recording of every track. You have no point to make whatsoever. U r arguing with no one about nothing, to no purpose. Gotta love social media, eh?😀
Fir All You Need is Love. They did not mention the quoting of the songs yesterday, and She Loves You. Also, in the film soundtrack, the 2nd verse plus the Instrumental portion, plus the Second Chorus , were omitted, with the repeat of the call and response portion of the Chorus switched around.
George Martin was not present for She’s leaving home. Was produced by another person bought in by Paul because he didn’t want to wait for Martin who was engaged elsewhere. The song was the either mixed or edited or re produced by Martin.
I love Geoff Emerick (R.I.P.) but why does he dislike George so much. He's a Paul fanatic. It makes me NOT trust his words because he "favors" Paul and a little bit of John. Paul is beyond amazing. Guess what? George had 3 number-ones and many other hits. I wish Geoff Emerick would have listened to ALBUM simply called "George Harrison" (1979). Geoff will eat his words. George's brilliance on many many albums is beyond Geoff Emmerick's personal critiques. This is proved by the amazing album's George put out, up until his passing.
. I remember an interview with Donovan, in which he said he suggested the "sky of blue and sea of green" line to Paul when he was stuck for a lyric to the verse.
It's All Too Much is an incredible George Harrison Song and so often dismissed. I always thought the Magical Mystery Tour songs should have been combined with the Yellow Submarine songs to make a full album and throw in the original Across The Universe. The full Album called A Doll's House could have been released in February 1968 and include 1. Magical Mystery Tour 2. Fool On The Hill 3. Blue Jay Way 4. Flying 5. Your Mother Should Know 6. I Am The Walrus 7. Hello Goodbye 8. Hey Bull Dog 9. Only A Northern Song 10. All Together Now 11. Across The Universe 12. It's All Too Much. A four track MMT ep could have been released when the Magical Mystery Tour film was released (Magical MysteryTour/Blue Jay Way/Hello Goodbye/I Am The Walrus) in December 1967 then a four trackYS ep (Hey Bulldog/Only A Northern Song/All Together Now/It's All Too Much) in July 1968.
Martin said the record sleeves had already been printed for Lady Madonna? Maybe he said labels because there was no special sleeve for that song in England.
Huh ? Beatles memorabilia ? Will the LEGO Yellow submarine do ? It is pretty detailed, like... even Jeremy is there. OK OK, if it doesn't count because its only LEGO I don't care, 'cause I had SUCH good time putting it together, having the movie Yellow Submarine running in the background on my TV all the time. I actually enjoyed it so much, that I forced myself to stretch the assembly over 2 evenings, just to get the MAX entertainment value out of it. The LEGO Yellow Submarine is a solid 10/10 product. NO ! It's NOT for sale !
Definitely a odd album of reused or throwaway tracks for a side a and a orchestral score of the film for a side b But the album is a wonderful listen either side you listen to because the songs somehow fit together even tho they’re just different musically which definitely makes sense from their recording sessions
I certainly remember seeing something similar to the All You Need Is Love bit recently. The word ‘snit’ at 37:41 particularly struck me because I’d never heard it before.
24:38 rare shot of John playing George's Gibson SG later given to Pete Ham of (tragic) Badfinger fame. John is funny, they wanted no part of the film but after it comes out and ultimately becomes it's own "thing" and now absolutely in the Beatle canon John is griping about no credit So typical Lennon. And Paul? Clueless that Hey Bulldog is one of the first digs at Paul. Basically at this point John is a dribbling heroin junkie with zero motivation. Paul barely got the band thru Pepper and the failed MMT fiasco and by this point John sort of resents Paul being the de facto leader. Note Bulldog was the residue cheered on by Paul of a Paul session for Madonna. Great song, great nasty lead by George, very rare as the *nasty* leads were usually either Paul or John. 🎸
Been a Beatles tragic for 60 plus years. I watch Yellow Submarine and find it jars my senses. It's bizarre, more than that. There must be word out there. I can't watch it. Maybe it's a phobia dunno. Fear of clowns maybe. Coulrophobia. Or fear of ventriloquist dummies. Pupaphobia I think. There is an uncomfortable irrational dread of something, and it's there in YS, which I originally watched in the 60's, but not now....
I have 4 of those Yellow Sub Hotwheels unopened in case people get stupid and think they are worth more than the $1.00 per I paid. OOPS they are dumb, I just sold a Yellow Sub lunchbox ($15 new), a hotwheels yellow sub and a $1.98 Yellow Sub pin you can get from Temu for $1.98 for $45 + shipping. LOL...a regular 50¢ millionaire. 🎸
Is more than OBVIOUS that "yellow submarine" was inspired and an answer to Magic Bus from the Who which was about that bus some hippies used in america to go around giving LSD to everybody, the Beatles were always trying to make something around what was fashion at that time, and LSD and that hippie stuff was the new stuff back then
Geoff Emerick could be a real prick about George Harrison. In his book he really made George out to be a hack. George never forgave Emerick for the things he said.
Looked like it was probably a good video but why is everyone using these bloody annoying subtitles??? As soon as I see them, I switch off. TH-cam already provides the option of subtitles!!! Bye.

I agree with Dave Grohl. ‘Hey Bulldog’ is one of the best songs The Beatles ever did.
They just agreed to sit back and (hopefully) make money off their names and songs with very little effort on their part.
... and finish off their contractual obligation to United Artists with very little effort on their part.
I don't think Your Mother Should Know was Paul's contribution to the world wide shown tvshow. I think it was. All Together Now.
I must be one of the few people who prefer 'It's Only A Northern Song' over 'Within You, Without You'
Ad Hoc, Ad Loc and Quid Pro Quo! So little time, so much to Know!
Martin said the record sleeves had already been printed for Lady Madonna? Maybe he said labels because there was no special sleeve for that song in England.
Search here for George Martin at the Hollywood Bowl for his live performance of some of the YS music. Also Stewart Copeland plays drums!
SpongeBob x The Beatles be like.
Definitely a odd album of reused or throwaway tracks for a side a and a orchestral score of the film for a side b
But the album is a wonderful listen either side you listen to because the songs somehow fit together even tho they’re just different musically which definitely makes sense from their recording sessions
Paul created the riff to "Hey, Bulldog"? Wasn't that already there in John's piano demo of the song?
I think he meant "recording the riff for the song."
Is this a reupload? I swear I've already watched this
Only in an alternate timeline. 🤣 This is a new upload, friend.
I certainly remember seeing something similar to the All You Need Is Love bit recently. The word ‘snit’ at 37:41 particularly struck me because I’d never heard it before.
So Yoko had nothing else better to do with her time but hang around the Beatles? Sure explains a lot.
She was a full time artist. They don't have a 9-5 job
I love everything Beatles. But there was never an actual Sgt Pepper. That is the whole idea.
Yellow Submarine is in 4/4 not 3/4
John came up with the main melody….
Sigh... Paul came up with the 4-bar chorus tune. John came up with the 4-bar verse tune. Which is the "main" one and why?
It is quite obvious, as I've always stated, YS is not a studio album. Just the same as MMT isn't.
Yellow Submarine is an official studio album.
George "Mar-Tin". It's properly pronounced as "Mart'n", like "kitt'n" instead of "KiTTin".
Bye.
13:10 wtf?? Only a Northern is a very great song
Absolutely and I can't understand the disdain for it expressed here. It is head and shoulders above the rubbish McCartney has come up with.
@@markuspboeddeker5930 Cmon "Wild Honey Pie" has great lyrics. Bip Bop as well.....
The Beatles could do no wrong. Even if they did wrong.
This was on another channel just a couple of days ago, why is this being repeated??? Maybe not scene for scene, but word for word within scenes, WHAT'S THE GIG HERE? WHY IS THIS BEING REPEATED
I seriously believe we might’ve entered a different timeline; you’re the second person that says this, and I have no idea what you’re talking about. This is a new video. 😄
They all lived in a major fail?

Music and imagination? You mean music and mind altering drugs...
Barack Obama for Kamala Harris? Gag. Get the politics off of this page.
The request for no politics is always a give away. 😂
My family and I lived in Moscow in 1970-1971. For my tenth birthday, we play the Yellow Submarine film. The vibrant colors and bright colors were “all too much” for my submariner father!!
Wow I'm early
i hung out with Alf Bicknell in 2000 in London and liverpool he's a really down to earth nice guy.
I think George Martin's score for the film is absolutely beautiful, it's ideal for these visuals and it's a scandal that it's so criminally underrated
24:00 Classic Lennon… refuses to be part of any Beatles film, then complains he wasn’t part of the film. 😉
The summing up is way off, the music is inspired. Very sad conclusion to an interesting post. TY.
Well done
