I’ve the Stanwood and it’s wonderful!!! After going through 3 different ones I just decided to buy this one and another huge wooden one that can wind a 1lb skein if Yarn in 4 minutes! They both are simply marvelous ♥️🌹❣️

This looks so easy! I have re-rolled every ball of yarn I have bought for every project. My father taught me to roll it on my thumb, extending the end onto my palm & then roll & roll until there is a large ball of yarn on my thumb!! It is slow going but it has always worked. I have taught so many people over the years to re-roll their yarn before every project, for various reasons, the first-knowing whether or not there are knots and breaks in the yarn, and for the ease of working on a project bringing the yarn up through the middle of the ball. (I have been knitting since I was 7 years old-for 50 years now. Wow when you see it down in words-yikes 50years!!!) I had no idea there was a winder out there doing the job in mere minutes, not 10-20 minutes or more depending on the size of the skein & the knots and breaks-they are so upsetting when you pay for good yarn you expect it to be all in one piece. Thanks for the demo, I think I might buy one as a bday or Christmas gift for me!!! Happy knitting to all....or crocheting....
Hi Winecrafter! Winding yarn by hand is a great skill to have! Especially to make them center pull! Good for you and your dad. My mom taught me too, but seems I am too impatient to do it everytime by hand! DEFINITELY go for the Stanwood... it's so very well made and lovely to use. Hope Santa brings you one early! Big hugs. Christa. xx!

Thanks. I use one of these for rewinding yarn for my old mother. She had the issue of not being able to crochet through a whole jumbo (Red Heart) skein of yarn without turning it into a mess. I paid $70 for one of these Stanwood winders and have never looked back. I liked at the end how you use a crochet hood and pull the end into the cake. I have been leaving the cake on the winder and then pulling the yarn out of the winder "eyes" on the unit and then just winding the last several rounds around the middle of the cake, then tucking in the end. I will try your method. Thanks for sharing.
I just got mine today and already have 5 cakes!!! Love it! Just be careful to keep your thumb on the crank area. I had mine a bit to the left and it squished my thumb...my fault! It's fine now. I would recommend this winder big time!! Thanks for your great demo!
Congratulations!! So happy for you! Great choice. It is the best yarn ball winder I know of by FAR. Adore it. Suddenly everything needs to be caked before using. Same happening at your house? ha ha ha! xx!
I got this about 2 years ago for Christmas it's really the only thing I wanted as a present lol it helps to keep my purchases from ice all together in one cake instead of many little ones. So it saves me on space.

I had bought two cheap yarn winders to wind left over yarn from skeins and didn't care for either one. Now I am buying more expensive yarns that are coming in hanks and I really need something good to use so I after doing some research and even though they were expensive I decided to buy the Stanwood Amish swift and the large ball winder in your video. I have not tried them yet and have been a little afraid to but you make it look so easy! I'm going to give them a try tomorrow! Thank you for this video, it's helped me feel more confident! I'll let you how it works out for me!
I have a tiny one and I love it too!!!! I bought some mixed yarn lot with a bunch of scraps from ice yarns just so I can cake them up and see what's in the packs. 🤭💖
I’ve seen some yarn where the wrapper has arrows that show which side comes out from the center. I love these because I have a terrible time finding the Center feed. May consider having wrapper labels updated to show this. That, or I’ve noticed that it is always from the same side based on looking at which side of the label (when facing you with text is right side up)... so I’ve started keeping a list of which brand pulls from which side. Hope this helps
Oh! Wouldn't that be fabulous?? We have no such luxury over here. But have found that one end has a larger looking center hole than the other end. Arrows would be marvelous!!! xx!

It looks as though the loops on both arms are made so you can pull the yarn down and around the curl, so you don't have to thread it through the eye, or do you simply prefer to do it that way? I don't understand taking a perfectly good skein of yarn and rewinding it. What am I missing?

just got mine today, but the skein I wound didn't have a center pull. It's Big Twist Soft. It's a wonderful machine, but I had to unwind a section from the skein, then wind/cake on the winder, stop, and repeat. It took a very long time and it was frustrating. But, the cake wound perfectly on the winder. Great tension, an I'm thrilled with the end result. But I can't find any info or suggestions to help with skeins without a center pull. I did a lot of research and ordered this from Amazon today. I use Red Heart Super Saver yarn, so wanted something for larger cakes. I have so many balls. I’m hoping the cakes will be better for storage. I just have a couple of questions. How do you store the winder? And how is it working from the outside of the cake? Is it easy to pull from the outside? I’m looking forward to rewinding my yarn balls.
Hi, Sherri Olander!! I just leave my winder set up all the time. If I am going to be using the whole cake, I start from teh center. If I am only going to be using a bit of the cake, I work from the outseide. I keep it in a basket beside me, and it comes off teh cake just fine. ;) Thank you! 🌻🌺🌼
@@SecretYarnery Thank you! I git get winder today and I am in love. 😍 It isn’t as large as I feared, and I am amazed at how much yarn my kids and I wound. I just want to keep winding! My kids loved using the winder. I’m so glad I made this purchase.

I bought a winder wool... I can't wait to have it for doing my ball yarn. I supposed we win place on shelves ? I am afraid that yarn will be a little dammaged to compared to a skein ball because the yarn is tight. But I think not. Shops should sell all yarn in this form
Hi. Is there such a thing as winding 'hanks' of yarn with the ball winder without a swift? Every vid I find uses skeins only...not hanks. I do not even want to mess with a swift! Thank you
Yes there is, although it is a lot more tedious... you can hang the hank across the back of a couple of dining room chairs - back to back. Or have a friend hold it on their arms while you wind like crazy! ;) Hope that helps? Christa. xx!
I'm looking for reviews on large ball winders. This one looks interesting, but just about any ball winder will handle the small skeins of yarn. I was hoping to see you wind larger skeins. I'm frogging a shawl made of Mandala Ombre' cake, it's a medium 4 weight, 344 yards, and my small ball winder made a mess of it.
Hi.. thanks for your view.. beside this ball winder do you know where I can buy a yarn twister any recommendations that works well? Because our local yarn is multi to get worsted weight got to work with 8 ply or 8 strand untwisted.. I want the hand operated . Thanks .. looking forward
I purchased the Stanwood and should receive it tomorrow. I'm so excited!! I have a question...When you are holding the yarn as you wind, are you putting pressure on the yarn or is that necessary? I have a small yarn winder (Loops&Threads) and know that I have to put quite a bit of pressure on the yarn when using that winder or the cakes will be loose and collapse. Thanks for you help and for the demo! :)
Hi Mellody! Congratulations! GREAT choice! Yes - I squeeze the yarn in my hand a tiny bit. Not too much, but enough for the yarn to stay in a nice firm cake once it is off of the cone. How are you loving yours?? Where did you set it up?? I still have to bring mine over from the guest house into the new yarnery... have to find a spot. ;) Chat soon, Christa. xx!
Hi Christa! I absolutely love mine!! I have made about 25 or more cakes now! It's addictive! :) I find the cakes to be sufficiently tight just by the tension of the yarn coming out of the skein and only use my hand to guide it. I have pulled the yarn from the skein and then wound it and these turn out much fluffier, which I actually like because I can feel the softness level of the yarn better but I try to tighten the wind just a little toward the end to bind it well. I used mine at the kitchen table. I don't have a designated craft room. Wish I did!! I have most of my things in a spare bedroom. I would like to mount the winder there on the table with my sewing machine but am a little nervous about it. That room also holds the toys of my 4 year old Grandson whose eyes would get wide if he saw that winder and a handle he could turn! LOL! So for now it's hidden away. LOL!!
Oh Mellody - I totally get that! My 4 and 5 year old LOVE the ball winder! They get all michievious as they slink over to it and quietly turn the handle as they watch me out of the corner of their eyes - waiting the impending shouting and orders! The amount of times I have untangled greasy yarn from the gears.... I tell you! ha ha ha! ;) Chat soon, Christa. xx!

Hey Christa, I really enjoyed your review. One thing caught my attention when I was watching it initially and after I received my own winder, decided to go back to your video and leave a comment. The arm farther away from you (not the orbital one) seems to move a little too much. I’m wondering if the “u” of the part is properly attached to the base. The screw on the base is supposed to be inside the “u”, to avoid the shaking you seem to be experiencing.
Riiiiight??? Yours doesn't?? I'll have to check mine. Thanks!!xx

I tell you! ha ha ha! ;) Chat soon, Christa. xx!
