7:34 from what I've gathered, Mazen was not promised he would be safe upon return.
They threatened his family members' lives if he did not return. He knew he would be risking his own life, and he still returned to try and spare his family.
    SO brave❤❤

There should be erected an international committee under UN having the power to visit the prisons country by country issuing yearly reports to prevent horrific cases like Abu Ghraib and the Israeli prisons.

The ICJ clarification of July 19, 2024 states: 1 Israel must leave all illegally occupied territories (Gaza, West Bank, East Jerusalem…SYRIAN GOLAN HEIGHTS). 2 Israel and all supporters of the illegal occupation are obliged to pay reparations (USA, UK, Germany…)

There are also bans against chemical weapons use, where are the warrants for Assad? There are none, but the pm of Israel has warrants for him

That'll never happen! My grandma is from Golan Heights. We are Syrian american. My grandma is obviously full Syrian but I'm a syrian-american she married a man who was from scotland. My father's parents his mother is from Sudan his dad is from Yemen. My dad was born in America my mother was born in America. My grandmother was pregnant with my mom when they came to the US she didn't know she was pregnant at the time she was only about 2 months. I don't think people really know what's going on in Syria and they see all of the prisoners let out but they don't see the true term that these people caused. They say they're all innocent everybody in prison says that they're innocent. Israel and the United States funded this they wanted the oil from Assad Israel wanted the land and they are doing this in order to get land and oil this is all it has to do with it has nothing to do with freeing people or getting their own government in place. There are two million syrians displaced why is that? Why is the US bombing isis targets now? Because they let isis out of the prisons.people don't see how bad it really is over there and exactly what's going on you basically let Al-Qaeda take over. These people said oh we denounced Al-Qaeda you can denounce it that's what you were founded on give me a break. They want to talk about Biden giving Afghanistan to the Taliban they just gave Syria to the al-Qaeda rebels

Syrians deserve some unity and peace after 54 yrs dictatorship and the last most horrific 13 yrs. Erdogan is for Erdogan. US is for US. Israel is for Israel. Let the people of Syria find their way. May they find some Unity and Peace.

They won’t. The rebels are a foreign mercenary force sharing the same ideology as AlQaida. Can’t believe we’d see the day where jihadis are being whitewashed as democrats.

Since the fall of Syria, 6 Arab Druze communities have voted unanimously to join the State of Israel. Are they free to do so? or do their votes only count when they vote the way these people want?

I honestly don’t know how to feel about this, yes Assad was a tyrant and I’m happy that the Syrian people are finally free but HTS ( a literal offshoot of AQ) are no better, a country ran by “rebels” is never a good thing. It’s only a matter of time before the sectarian violence erupts.

Frankly, I think our focus should be solely on Palestine right now. Basically, we should just take a page out of Iran & Russia's playbook and leave the West to solve its own problem. The reason israel is so uneasy is because HTS terrorist weren't supposed to take Syria unscathed, but the fact that Hezbollah, Iran, and Russia left while the Syrian Army gave up largely without a fight, means that israel & Turkiye now essentially have a melting pot on their borders. While we watch events in Syria, we are being deliberately distracted from the genocide of the oppressed original inhabitants of Palestine. Zion must be stopped once and for all!

Great post ! I am reading people comment on the situation in Syria as if it was an outlier ! Bashar Assad was a mere amature compared to the string of ruthless bloody terrorist leaders in Israel since 1948. The dictatorship in Israel has lasted more than twice as long as the syrian one ! Millions of Palestinians have been inside a jail for over fifty years ! Save Palestine first and foremost.

DN is pretending like a liberal revolution took place when in reality a jihadi terrorist organization took over similar to Taliban taking over Afghanistan.
The reporter sounds delusional…with all due respect.

    IS ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION?
I was listening to the morning world news on National Public Radio (NPR) this morning as usual and they were interviewing Syrian political prisoners who had been released from Assad’s torture prison a couple of days ago when Assad was overthrown. The tales of torture are mind-numbingly horrifying and disturbing beyond words. Assad imprisoned over ten thousand of his own people during his 20+ reign of terror, most for no apparent reason whatsoever, other than to send a message terror to his citizens to maintain his iron grip on absolute power.
This is what authoritarians do. Not all resort to the extremes of running assembly-line torture chambers but most are prepared to go there if necessary. What really astounds me is how many Americans seem incapable of connecting what happens in these dictator countries to what is happening right now in front of us in our own country. Trump is shouting his intentions to rule with an iron fist loudly from the rafters every day as he appoints people to his cabinet who are clearly authoritarian anti-democracy figures. But still… most who voted for this felon rapist seem blissfully unconcerned and unaware that they may personally be on the verge of slipping into the abyss of totalitarianism from which there may be no return. Once you are in that abyss, the slopes you need to climb to exit it are very high and very slippery.
There IS still an option to avoid that abyss. The Biden administration could refuse to hand over power to a convicted criminal and a tyrant using the 14th Amendment. The rest of the world is astonished that Biden is standing placidly by like a deer caught in headlights watching democracy slip away without honoring his oath of office to protect and preserve it. Trump is giving us plenty of warning. WHY is no one with the power to prevent this taking steps to do so?
This will be the big question future historians and our own children will have for those of our time. I personally can see no answer that could justify such negligence. The specter of Assad is hanging over our own nation right now. Is anyone paying attention?
