I just got accepted back into a second year apprentice after 5 years "break" of being involved with a crappy company. Went into medical for the last 5 years... now I'm going back into electrical. The way you explain things and just the referencing to the uglies book is amazing it got the old cobwebs out of the gears and start getting my mind going. I literally start this Monday and I am excited, thank you.

I cannot stress how handy this book has been whenever I thought I forgot how to do something, just look in the book find what I forgot and continue on.

The bathroom was a switched neutral for one light and the way they wired it was wrong. and when I went to add another light your videos walked me through how to undo what they did to make it all work the way I wanted. I remember the first time I saw one, I was a new to the trade, straight out of a not very good trade school on an industrial job. I walked in on a discussion on how to wire 3 ways, these were all industrial guys with years of experience using contactors to control lights 3 ways were something some of them had never used, so they were all standing around with their Uglys out trying to figure it out. Newby walks in and tells them how to do it, dumb should have just told them I could do it, as they sent most of us home that afternoon because they were switching over to main power and the only guys who staid other than the power crew was the guys wiring the three ways. I bought one as soon as soon as I could find one, 22 years ago you had to know where to buy them as soon as I found one it went into my tool kit and there has been one there ever since. Dustin, Another awesome video. I too worked for a 48 state contractor from St. Louis. I used to give everyone in the design dept Uglys books. Another tool I handed out was SqD motor slide rules. They are extremely useful as well. Suggestion, you could do a video on calculating branch circuit loads, then applying the breaker and conductor sizing. This could then take you to sizing a sub panel based on the feeder calculations. Just a thought. Respectfully, Kevin

Awesome video man. I like the way you explain everything so clearly and simple. A coworker of mine suggested the Ugly’s book a long time ago. Keep one in my house and one in my toolbag. And I suggest it to the apprentices. Such an invaluable tool to have.
As a service tech I have this book in my van, but I found that I use the “Electrician’s Bible” app by Quky. It was a few bucks to by the full version, worth it!

One thing I’m very disappointed that it doesn’t have is a wire phase/ color to number chart for when it’s time to pull in wire to the panels. I was very surprised when I was looking through it that it didn’t have it as it’s definitely a reference that’s more used than some of the other things in there. I contacted uglys about it but didn’t get a response. Not that phasing takes a long time, but when you’re pulling in 5 or 6 circuits at a time and have 7 panels to pull into it makes it easier to be able to see instantly what colors you need to stack.

My interest in your channel is because eventually, I would like to come and work in America as an electrician. You set the amperage on your overload relay to the FLA on the motor's nameplate on your motor starter. Yes you size your conductors to the FLC in article 430.138 in the NEC. Correct me if I am wrong.
for instance when you calculate box fill for an easy example 12 conductors count as 2.25 meaning 12/2 = 5.50 meaning 3 12/2 wires (16.50) would create a box fill violation in an 18 cubic inch box if there was a device installed as well. The device = 2. So 16.50 + 2 > 18 cubic inch box... point being grounds dont count as conductors for fills or correct me if im wrong.
the app is nice too! although not as much in it as the book, the calculators come in handy! So I use both :) lol But we are currently learning conduit bending in class so, I feel justified for using both haha.
Gotta remember that if you are putting a lot of conductors in a conduit you need to de-rate the ampacity of conductors in said conduit. Knowing how to de-rate conductors is a good skill to have. Gotta consider the temp rating of termination points in equipment, ambient temp, and as I mentioned # of conductors in a conduit.
You make great videos and content related to our trade. Keep up the great work. I do take offence to calling the 3rd and 4th year apprentices as wrench turners. I’m a 4th year, running mid 90s on all 3 years, and I can teach some journeymen on theory they’ve forgotten. I’m most definitely not a glorified wrench turner. I agree, 1st and 2nd year we were educated labourers to a certain degree, but 3rd and 4th, especially in the industrial trade, we are noteworthy electricians.
Any advice on what math skills to polish up before applying for an apprenticeship. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and inspiring me to become an Electrician. Truly grateful 🤙🏽
I keep mine in my tool bag, the code book in my truck. It's way easier to use. Off subject a buddy of mine gave me a 1943 NEC that was his grandfather's.
Get the Kindle version and you always have it on your phone, your tablet, your laptop, etc. and it's also easy to take screenshots of a page and share it when needed.
Those are great to have, I also tell any apprentice to read through the code book alittle everyday to get familiar with it sounds crazy but if you read over a few times you will surprised how much you remember. I mean it's the electrical bible we need to know it
You can pass the Electrician Journeyman test using that book. The first time. Just make sure you give it a page number in the code book..That an the NFPA 70 book. No electrician should be without them..
Hello I just wanted to say i really like your videos they are wicked helpful. I’m a brand new electrical apprentice in the union in Massachusetts. I was wondering if you can give me more insight into how to actually go about tabbing the uglys and where . I saw yours was tabbed and very easy to flip to and flip through and that’s what i need. Thanks for any and all help
Regarding your example of equipment ground, my understanding is that you can share ground wires (only) between two circuits through a raceway. For example if you ran a 15A circuit and a 20A circuit in conduit, you could share the ground. If you do that, do you add the amperages of both circuits together to get the correct ground wire size from the table shown at 9:00? Or, since the ground would rarely be called on to carry short circuit current for both circuits at the same time, would you use the ground size for only the bigger of the two circuits?
I bought the app, so I hope u feel its comparable to the text book. They say it will automatically update with the code. Guess I'll find out in about 6 months.

I couldn't find that article (430.138).
The International Fire Code was about the same size (thickness).....I bought a condensed cheat sheet similar to Ugly's....What a Joy!

The math portion of the test I took at the JATC was like 8th/9th grade algebra. It's really not hard.
