this wasn’t supposed to be like an exposé like quiet on set, demi wanted this to be about the experiences as a child star & to raise awareness for parents, demis actually just gotten the Californian governor to sign a legislation for children that do content creation like the coogan law for child actors

I don’t think they were able to go as deep with it being made by Hulu and Hulu is now owned by Disney so there is probably a lot they weren’t allowed to say

You should watch the 4 part HBO docuseries “quiet on set; the dark side of kids tv” which covers what was going on at Nickelodeon in the late 90’s early 2000’s. It’s a hard watch at times but it’s important to hear those stories too in order to try to prevent them from happening in the future.

I personally think Demi wanted to go all in but couldn’t get in too deep otherwise there would be a lot of implications, having disney buying the project even, when they bought hulu… So they mande into more of a “lets take care of our kids” rather than “look what happened to our kids”

3:19 its talked about in “simply complicated” which i highly recommend watching to get a better understanding of her relationship with substances in the beggining

Drew Barrymore comes from a famous family; both her dad and grandfather were famous. Yes, Sabrina Carpenter was on a show called 'Girl Meets World' (a spin-off of the show 'Boy Meets World') as a character named "Maya Hart"; Sabrina was a Disney Channel kid.

i don't think that the idea of the doc was showing the bad stuff in the industry, i really believe that Demi wanted to show us the mental health consequenses about being a child star and bring the topic to the public, and this week a legislation about protecting the financial security of child influencers was signe by a governor.
the doc goes into a intimistic path of the child stars and the conversation is very cozy. btw, that was the first time of Demi being a director (except from music videos), and personally i think she nailed it.

Will add more later but here is a draft of my essay 😂
The doc is co-directed by Demi (who's directed a few of her own music videos). Honestly, I didn't think it was gonna be too dark since they had so many people that they wouldn't have had time to go into details for every single one. Also, Demi talked about her sexual abuse trauma in Dancing With The Devil (which is the one you watched). I think the doc is so well done and I loved hearing from all of these former child stars from different eras and of different ages, but especially Drew and Christina. I love that Demi asked Drew how old she was when she was first GIVEN substances, because kids that young usually don't go looking for it themselves. You can tell Demi and Drew are just genuinely good friends but they can probably also relate to each other and have been through much of the same things. I love their friendship and how open they are with each other. Demi has been on her show a few times.
Major respect to Alyson (who starred with her in Camp Rock and was indeed in the Missy Elliot video) for admitting that to Demi's face and Demi for apologising for making her and the others working on the movie feel like they had to walk on eggshells around her. I love Camp Rock but it's sad that they were both struggling so much at the time. I'm not a fan of JoJo Siwa and I don't know whether she's being genuine or not. Either way, it's horrible how the network treated her simply for "coming out" as gay. Anyway, I love that they are determined and focused on helping other future child stars with these child labour laws. Demi mentioned in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that there's a bill in governor Gavin Newsom's desk right now, which advocates for compensation for minors working on social media, and he has until Sep 30th to sign it.
EDIT: Gavin Newsom signed two bills (with Demi sitting right next to him): One (SB 764) establishes financial and legal protections for minors featured in monetised online content by mandating their parent or guardian set aside a percentage of their earnings in trust accounts. The other (AB 1880) expands the Coogan Law to include minors who are employed as content creators on online platforms.
Demi was on Barney between ages 10-12 along with Selena Gomez (they were best friends). She also starred in a short-lived series called As The Bell Rings. But she rose to fame when she starred in Camp Rock with the Jonas Brothers in 2008. There was also a sequel and she had her own show called Sonny With a Chance (not connected to the movies though). Princess Protection Program, which she mentions, she starred in with Selena Gomez. Along with her work on Disney, she had her own music career and released two albums between 2008 and 2009. They were heavily pop/rock/punk influenced. Demi and Joe Jonas dated for a short period in 2010 while making Camp Rock 2. It was rumoured that he was using her or that their relationship was simply PR, but they remained friends (though I'm unsure if they still are) and Demi has never confirmed it. She and his brother Nick were very close friends too and there were rumours of them dating as well. Some think her song Ruin the Friendship is about him.
The bullying she received as a child, mainly for her weight which contributed to her eating disorder (along with competing in beauty pageants), resulted in her being homeschooled. That also led to her self-harming/cutting from the age of 11 along with saving suicidal thoughs even when she was as young as 7. She has said she began using opiates at age 13 after a car accident and had already started drinking by that time. This eventually led her to use cocaine at 17. At one point, she couldn't go half-an-hour without it and even used to smuggle it into planes. A lot of Demi's issues goes back to her childhood, specifically her birth father Patrick. She didn't really have a relationship with him after he left her mum and the family (she has 2 sisters) when she was only 2. He had bipolar schizophrenia and was an addict. He was also abusive to her mum Dianna and possibly her and her sisters as well. Patrick died from cancer in 2013 (around Father's Day) when Demi was 20 and he was 53. She created the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program in his honor to help people with mental illness who can't afford treatment or get the resources they need. She has also written several songs about him: For the Love of a Daughter, Shouldn't Come Back, Father and Butterfly. Each song shows how Demi has viewed her father and her growth, going from being angry and hurt to "accepting" his death while mourning what could have been.
A few years after he left them, Demi's mum married her stepfather Eddie (who Demi considers her dad), and they had Madison, Demi's half-sister. Madison starred on the later seasons of Desperate Housewives as Eva Longoria's daughter where weight was the main focus of the character. Demi also has an older sister, Dallas, who you saw in the doc as well. Demi, Dianna & Madison have all struggled with an eating disorder and Demi & Dianna have both struggled with substance abuse.
She was touring with the Jonas Brothers when she went to a treatment facility in the fall of 2010, after an incident which ended with her punching one of her friends/dancers on a plane (the one she and Alyson are referring to). After treatment she did an interview where she talked openly about being bullied, struggling with an eating disorder & self harm and being diagnosed with bipolar disorder (in the Dancing With The Devil doc she said she found out it was a misdiagnosis and was corrected to ADHD but here she talks as if she has it, so I'm confused). Later, she would also talk about how serious her addiction was, but at this point she was still using and wasn't ready to admit it was a problem. After treatment, they lived in a "sober house" for a while but later admitted they weren't actually sober. She became sober in March 2012 and has talked about a performance she did on American idol where she was severely hungover. She just celebrated 6 years of sobriety when she relapsed in 2018. She even released a song about it called Sober a month before the OD.
She has released 3 docs: Stay Strong in 2012 (ED, self-harm and bipolar (mis)diagnosis), Simply Complicated in 2017 (addiction and backstory) and Dancing with the Devil (her OD in 2018 and sexual abuse). In Simply Complicated she admitted that she was under the influence of cocaine while being interviewed about her sobriety in Stay Strong. In Dancing with the Devil she talks about being "California sober" (weed and alcohol in "moderation") but later that year, in December 2021, she became "sober sober" as it was not working for her. I don't know if Danny would be interested in watching DWTD again but if you're gonna watch the other ones... And Skin of My Teeth is a song on her album Holy Fvck. There's actually another song on the album (which is a rock/punk/pop album) called Feed that I got reminded of because of something you.said. The second half of the chorus goes "I got two wolves inside of me. But I decide which one to feed".
And the song she is recording and is played at the end is called You'll Be Okay, Kid: th-cam.com/video/3GYdQcQc7jg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hjSvOxuWFO0Tt4DK (the title and its message is similar to Taylor Swift's You're On Your Own, Kid). It was written for the doc and the video contains photos of her as a child/teenager.

i get so angry watching what desperate housewives did to madison de la garza (demi's half sister). it was one of my favorite shows, but there are certain parts in it that aged horrendously, or that were just awful to begin with. madison was like 6 or 7 and her entire character revolved around her being "fat". at one point her ex-model mother (played by eva longoria) tried to get her to work out by making her chase after a donut. there's a whole arc about her mother having to accept that she doesn't have a supermodel daughter. it's all played for laughs and it's incredibly uncomfortable to watch. that poor girl hadn't even hit puberty yet and was taught by adults to be self-conscious about her body.
