    The ɔɪ sound is exactly how we say "hi" in Portuguese. It was funny listening to you saying so many "hi" to me haha

      That's awesome! lol. I didn't know. That reminds me of living in Thailand. The word for rice is "cow." And they eat a lot of rice, so it was funny to always think about cows when I was eating rice. What's funnier is the word "moo" means pig, but in English "moo" is the sound a cow makes.

    I liked your video sm, i learned sm here, but i have a question, the sound ɪ in the diphithong ɑɪ is more like the sound "bIg" or "familY?

    • @RobertTeachesEnglish
      @RobertTeachesEnglish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Honestly, the sound in the diphthong is more similar to a long e sound for me (like the e in "me"). If you try to combine ɑ with the ɪ sound in "big", it won't sound right. I would try combining it with the long e sound instead, so you end the sound with a wide smile. I hope that helps!

      @@janildesilva7847 Yes! I agree completely. It does sound that way. You've got good ears. I'm sure you're doing a great job with your pronunciation.

      @@RobertTeachesEnglish thanks for answer me, i so happy for found your video, i watched another videos but they said that the ɪ in the diphithongs like aɪ and ɔɪ was with the sound of short i, and the ʊ as in the diphithong ɑʊ was like the pure ʊ and i can't do these sounds together, but now i understand it, i'll subscribe me in your channel

    • @RobertTeachesEnglish

      @@janildesilva7847 Thank you. Officially, and based on the linguistic symbols, those teachers are telling the truth, but I think teachers get to hung up on teaching rules, and they forget to use common sense and trust their instincts. I remember being shocked during my linguistic course when I learned those as well. It just doesn't sound that way. Even if we are , in fact, combining those sounds, I think at least by aiming for the other sounds, we will get better results. Thanks for subscribing. I hope you find the rest of my videos helpful as well.

    The diphthong au is pronounced differently in British English, right? I first started with British English and as far as I remember that they start it with the ah sound as in father, am I correct?

    Hi robert! At the beginning of this video i heard you saying "diphthongs in the American english", do you mean they are not the same in the British one?

    • @RobertTeachesEnglish

    How about /iə/ as in the word 'really' /ˈriəli/ or in word 'theater', is it a diphthong in American English?

    • @RobertTeachesEnglish
      @RobertTeachesEnglish  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most Americans pronounce really as "rilly." For Theater, it's just two separate vowels-long e and short u.

    Hi Roberth ! Very nice video. Just one question. I've been looking for info about this amazing topic as Phonetics is and I noticed in american english there are lots of vowel sounds. Could you please tell me how many sounds there are in american english? Please let me know ASAP. It'd be great because I'm a teacher who is going deeper and deeper in this topic. Thx in advanced.

      I teach 20 on my channel if you include the schwa sound and r-controlled vowels (the last 5 are coming out on Friday), but some recognize one more. This is because older generations and certain regions will still use the ɔ sound, while most of us only use the ɑ sound. You'll see other lists that don't include r-controlled vowels. The general consensus is either 15 or 20, but it depends on who you ask.
