It came out a while ago that the Cam’ron beat for Down and Out wasn’t actually produced by Kanye. That’s pretty common knowledge by now but I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out that he didn’t do this one either. This beat sound so much more like a Just Blaze beat than a Ye beat. Like yeah the soul sample but the way the different parts of the track are chopped and layered just scream Just Blaze to me. The drums too. I’m sure Ye could’ve made this beat but it just doesn’t sound like it that much
Having remade so many Ye and JB samples; I have to agree with you. This tactic does seem more of a Just Blaze record in its structure! But where I feel its Kanye; each sample chop has a purpose; JB usually just adds chops for the sake of it. And also, another reason, Kanye said JB was copying his style around this time, during his DC interview. This could be Kanye trying to out do him at his style? And FINALLY, Kanye’s re-remix of this, from one of his mixtapes, he specifically talks about making the beat at the end, then he cuts it off abruptly. But one thing, JB came out and said he had MJ’s vocals… why would it be in his possession? Or maybe he did the mixing down or just had access to it like everyone else?! Either way, this is one of Hip Hop’s best samples and productions.
