    This is my favorite era for clothing as everything is so structured but still shows off the female form. Would love to go shopping with Doris for a dress from this era or is reminiscent of this era

    I dug in the dumpsters at MGM. I still have one dress, a beaded one left. I restored and wore them. It was 1980.

    • @NostaIgiaJunkie
      @NostaIgiaJunkie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you know the provenance of the garments? Any clues left on the tags? I think it was in the 70s when Debbie Reynolds started snatching up everything MGM was hocking everything to the auction block.

    • @TheLilliBlue
      @TheLilliBlue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@NostaIgiaJunkie She sure did. I read she dug in the dumpster too. I'm from Las Vegas and she had a museum in her Hotel. I have one beaded dress left. It's black. No tags. We actually had a memorial service for a black knit dress everyone I knew wore. It was a contest on who got it that weekend. It was from the 50's. I was coming home from a date in the early 80's and found a huge garbage bag in Beverly Hills. I can't tell you how I knew to look in it but it was filled with beaded sweater sets and Marbella knit dresses. I made my date put it in his trunk. To this day that was my best "Roadside boutique" find. My roomate at the time was on a soap opera called "Days of Our Lives". She was fresh out of college and couldn't afford to buy clothing as fancy as what her character wore. She would wear my "Roadside" finds to the studio and ended up wearing many of them on the show. That was how I learned what film did to color. People didn't have the same mentality back then. Now we reuse,restore, and recycle. I have radar for vintage. A great place to find things is at the Goodwill on Beverly in Los Angeles. All the pickers want Free People and Lulu lemons. They pass the vintage to me. I found a Madeline Vionette gown for $8.99. Mint condition. Before covid I found many great things in bags by the trash. I miss thrift stores so much. It is such a thrill.

      @NostaIgiaJunkie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheLilliBlue Wow thanks for sharing that AMAZING story! It was almost as thrilling reading it as it would be finding your "Roadside boutique"! I started collecting vintage pieces myself about 5yrs ago. I live near Palm Beach FL myself (lots of old money, not as fun as LA and Vegas lol), and the only amazing thing I found was at a thrift shop balled up under the racks of "prom dresses". It was an amazing unlabeled baby peach and cream early 60s Givenchy gown. I could tell just by the construction alone, that it was couture worthy. I had a friend who knew someone, who knew someone high up that could confirm with the house that it was indeed a Givenchy. She lays in an acid free box under my bed lol

    • @TheLilliBlue
      @TheLilliBlue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NostaIgiaJunkie "Roadside Boutique" means I found it in the trash. LOL Cheers to the Givenchy gown rescue. I always give up my source. I don't know many folks who will spend the time to dig. My former husband says "Fish need to move through water to breathe, Lilli needs to move through cloths."
      I have learned so much from Doris. I have never met her in person but we have talked on the phone. It was right before covid hit and her shop was trashed during the riots. It all happened literally right in our back yards. Textile collectors are a rare breed. Doris has the most generous spirit.She is a teacher,historian, and hippy princess all about love. I call her the Stevie Nicks of Vintage. LA can be a snobby place, us and them sort of mentality. When you walk into The Way We Wore you can feel the warmth. Fair and repectful pricing. It is a place for everyone who loves and respects vintage. The ultimate vintage store in Los Angeles.
      Keep your eye out for snow birds. You will find a lot of New York fashion in Palm Beach . I must learn about acid free boxes. Thank you for this exchange. We do find kindred souls even when separated by miles and safe at home orders. So much good has come from the fact I have to stay at home. I moved my bedroom to my living room annd made my bedroom my closet. My collections are all in great order. thank you Marie Kondo. LOL Happy Hunting. May the vintage goddesses be with you. Again CHEERS! on the Givenchy rescue.

    Such a treat to see. I can't believe they were saved from a dumpster. When I went to Paris in the mid 80's I spent my last $40.00 on a YSL lipstick. It was before it was available in the United States. Felt so bad ass pulling out that lipstick. It cost more than my Le Sportsack. 🤣 He passed on too soon. Thank you for sharing another one of your fashion jewels.

    Every time I hear the dumpster story my heart starts racing a bit and I get a little bit of anxiety. I love that these dresses ended up in Doris' hands, she has so much respect for the dresses and the work.
    With a $500 gift card i would purchase something from a designer that was prominent in the eighties but isn't very well known anymore. Eg. Louie Feraud, Cacherel, Ungaro, Scherrer, the clothes I used to salivate over as a teenager and would dream of one day owning.

    The most fun was seeing the construction of the dress. With such wide seems and deep hems, if you wanted to alter the dress you could. But you wouldn't alter the dress. I have been dumpster diver in my life. You can find some of the nicest things... leather boots, antique dishes, lots of odds and ends. The Dior dress was lucky to be found by your friend. Dresses from the 50's are so classic. They hide so many body issues. Stay safe.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹🌹

Looking in your store I watched this vintage blass 90's black and white plaid dress and I just though "That's something I would totally take prom photos with¨. You're so far from here but i totally feel the love you have for your work, hope you read this bye;)
    (I also put the comment on your queens gambit video but i really want to make sure you watched it, love youuuu)

    Oo, just discovered your channel. I binge watched The Collection on Amazon (recommended fashion related drama set in post-war Paris) yesterday and fell back in love with beautiful clothes and fabrics. These dresses you speak about here are fabulous. Thanks for posting - looking forward to watching more.

    An interesting fact is that Atlanta businessman J. Mack Robinson, was a major investor in Yves St. Laurent's house when he first started. His wife loved St. Laurent's creation at Dior and Mr. Robinson loved the buzz St. Laurent created his first line of couture for the house of Dior.

    Id absolutely believe it! My friends and I find all kinds of amazing vintage things in alleys and dumpsters. I was shocked at what people throw out when I started.
    Also that first Dior dress is 👌

    💛 the ivory dress. Have you ever or do you have any dresses or shoes that are haunted?

    I am so happy to hear that these beautiful dresses were rescued! YSL was one of my favorite designer, he was so talented and ahead of his time. And yes, rejection is G-dd’s protection ✨

    The couture is so beautiful! I would love to buy an ensemble or jacket from The Way We Wore. It’s lovely to appreciate each piece both separately and together, and to see matching pieces travel through time together.

    I love your collections. If only we could find Dior in a Skip (dumpster) like that today. alas I fear most people are too savvy not to spot a Couture gown these days. especially when we were able to visit the V & A in London roll on the end of lockdown!

    I love listening to these stories on where you find these items. For the giveaway, I would love to own the 1940s pink and white print nightgowns. As my country is in lockdown, all I do is lounge all day.

    The first designer I bought as a teacher was a Dior coat from Lohmans' and I still have it....and fit in it again!
