Sadly, it's been a while since I've been to The fair. Been living in USA and Canada for 11 years but I always remember to look up the new Appleby Fair videos that are newly posted after each years event.. I must say this is the most professionally done video I've seen in a long while. Well done that man! Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
:) I've been trying to get to Appleby for almost a decade (hitching lifts off friends) and finally a lovely chap is going to teach me to drive horse-drawns so i can get there! :D
Thanks again you are very talented Alan. I really can't add more as all the other people have said it all ! I will just say that you obviously thoroughly enjoy filming and it comes through to your audience.
Alan cannot wait for your next part of your journey to Appelby when you put it up. Im originally from Ashington and seeing the Colesons, the Ruts, Ned who is no longer with us, Tommy Shafto all going to Appelby fair the same as you in traditional horses and carts and living waggon. Fantastic video keep up the good work. Very enjoyable.
Alan my friend you have out done yourself..one hell of a great short film as sent link to 43 friends. Am truly envious & jealous of your ability at the same time..your editing skills & choice of back round music are spot on..have added a visit to your neck of the world to my bucket list before old age or cancer claims me as beautiful country and the people..what can I say as this was like taking a trip from the comfort of my recliner..hope this finds you well & at peace after your recent loss..
@greavesful I spent two full days at Appleby, & I have just got back in the house, I have five hours of footage to sort out it will take a few weeks but it should be worth the wait.
At Appleby there are many breeds of all different sizes, I don't ride I just film the event from a social history context, many of the horses are both ridden and pull the carts. the black & white horse are 'Cobs'.
@fbi039 Sorry for the late reply Bruce, I spent a great few days at Appleby Fair, lucky as its only 45 miles from here. I managed to get back in one piece with 4 hours of footage to sort, met loads of new people & I have been invited to loads of other horse drives & fairs, on my doorstep, over the next few months. Only had about 4 hours sleep over the past few days, but the break has done me good. This part of the UK is brilliant, mainly off the tourist map, everyone loves it, history, scenery.
@crazyjane82 There wasn't too many red & white cob at the fair, so we probably saw the same horse. The horse of the fair for me was the 7yr Old White Cob Stallion, that I saw at the Rising Sun.
Plenty of country people go to Appleby, many of the people are just working people that enjoy horse's and the Appleby experience, always plenty of coach trips arrive each day..
@surrealfarm Any horse than can carry a rider, two kettle drums and work in a military band has to be special. I am surrounded by them, if a field has two horses in a least one of them is a Vanner or Cob. I'm not a horseman at all but would trust a Cob even before a Shetland Pony! I have my eye on some in parkland just up the road and will be spending a few hours with them for a little study?
Really fine horses. I love the wagons...reminds me of when I lived on a boat for about a 10 years in the San Francisco Bay of California. What kind of horses are they? How many hands tall are they? Do you ride them also or just use them to pull the wagons. Great Video thanks for another view into the world.
Those are Irish Cobs and called Gypsy Vanners in North America . In the U. S. people ride them . In the United Kingdom people mainly haul wagons and perhaps plow with them I think . They are new in the U. S . In England and Ireland they have been around a long time . They hauled " traveler " wagons . People called the people gypsies , but apparently that is an insult to call them that name .
No its a major event, thousands of tourists attend each year, just beware of health & safety and you should be safe, plenty of Police are always present. If you don't go to fair hill then the safest area is along the along the banks of the River Eden with the day trippers.
One dislike & a Comment (Deleted) today from a Racist that doesn't read the information supplied with the video, if they had bothered to read the info they may have learned something? There account has been suspended by TH-cam!
i have never been to Appleby before but, i hear really bad storys frm there. i mean some of the horses are really nice there are some nice cobs and tradtionals but some are really underweight and need feeding up.
They are really nice caravans and I have always had a laugh with them and they look after there horses as well
I've met a few of them again over the years, they are always amazed how popular the video has become.
What a lovely family, horses well looked after, nice wagons, just how it should be done
that was so nice to see, proper horse drawn barrel top convoys. I wish that was still a common sight nowadays. much respect
