It is not silent, it represents a nasal sound. This you can figure out by looking at the devnagari script. If there is a dot present above a letter the sound is nasal. Yes. In Hindi everything is assigned a gender even inanimate objects. umar is feminine while kad is masculine that is why aapkee umar and aapkaa kad.
