How to Bleed an ABS Brake System - Step by Step!

  • This is a video tutorial on how to bleed an ABS brake system. Air can get trapped up in the valves of the ABS system which can't be in the system for it to work properly. So we need to get that air out using a scanner to open and close the valves. I will show you exactly how to do that. Thanks for watching!

I saw where several people had replaced all brake components prior to bleeding system. One thing I saw no mention of is that all rotors need to be trued when new . They are not always true when new and that will cause pre mature wear on new pads . And if you are just replacing pads the rotor is just like the surface of a cylinder in a motor. They need just a bit turned on a brake lathe or they will just also eat up new pads.

Cheaper solution to the autel scanner if you're working on Ford products is a laptop/windows tablet a Bluetooth obd dongle and forscan software. The software is free and can do alot more then just bleed brakes.

Thank you very much for the video. Just to confirm, by attaching the scanner and follow the instruction for all four wheels, did we only bleed the ABS system as per the scanner, and we will still have to manually bleed all four wheels again by the traditional way? Or did we actually achieved bleeding both the main system, as well as the ABS system?

    • @2carpros

Makes more sense, having a bleeder screw open while running a autobleed of the ABS. Other abs autobleed functions does the procedure with all the bleeders closed…. so where would the air go with pressurized fluid on both sides of the air??

I purchased this scanner after watching this video. I recently replaced an HCU on a 2018 dodge ram and when I tried doing the ABS bleed after that, the system only cycles through the right front and right rear and then says test complete. I contacted the company that makes the scanner but they weren't very helpful and didn't have a definite answer on why it is doing that. Just wondering if you know if this is how some abs system bleeds work or is there any issue with the software for this vehicle?

Every time I apply the brakes on the first push the pedal feels a little spongy but if I let go and reapply the brakes then it feels hard and no sponginess. Every time I went to the garage I'd forget to mention it and now 6 years later it still does it but I got used to it. My wife probably never noticed it because she never said anything about it. I guess I might have air in the system. Am I correct to assume that? I'd actually like to replace the brake fluid since it's 6 years old. Would I just follow this procedure till I see the new fluid come out of the hose? Thanks,

when the helper sees the scanner read "open bleeder" the helper yells "open", signaling the wrench operator to open the bleeder. The mechanic then opens the bleeder and yells "open" The helper then pumps the brakes down and up every two seconds (is that right? Press pedal down slowly taking a full second to reach the bottom of its travel, release pedal and continue the count from one to two as the pedal returns itself to its upper position, repeat.) until the scanner reads "close bleeder", at which point the helper yells "close", signaling the mechanic to close the bleeder, at which point the mechanic closes the bleeder and yells "closed".

Nicely done but the brake fluid level will most definitely drop. Bleeding one wheel for 75 seconds I would think based on having done this manually you may empty the Master Cylinder or to the point air gets into its piston, thus needing to remove the MC and do a bench bleed. Hi! I been noticing a weird safety issue with my bmw f20. Whenever I braked hard, my steering veers to the right, an indication my left front brake is not functioning well?
A quick trip to a workshop ends up in both front left and right rotor and brake pad change.
However when the mech tried to perform a bleeding of front right brake, he said it was not bleeding well enough. After many attempts he decided to check on my abs pump.
He disconnected the line out from abs pump to front right, and upon pressing the brakes, little brake fluid seems to be coming out of the abs pump supplying to front right.
Is this a sure tell tale sign of faulty abs pump? Or should I carry out the wiring test as shown by you guys

I have a 1990 ford ranger and I just replaced the hydraulic abs assembly, bled the brakes and still feel like I have air in the system. I asked my mechanic friend and he said bleed the abs assembly, I found a spot for a bleeder tube and all, I don’t have the fancy computer stuff newer vehicles have, just bleed the abs from the bleeder screw on the abs assembly?

I have a 2000 ford excursion, I replaced all calipers, rotors and pads, Ive bleed the brakes (like normal), I also discovered a brake like with a hole it. I replaced that to. refilled the system..bleed the brakes another 3 times, and I still have a sinking brake pedal. I found out about the abs module needing bleed. I cracked each line bleeding them like a caliper having someone pushing the pedal inside. STILL when its not running, I have a rock hard brake pedal after pumping a few times. but when its running...pedal sinks to the floor before the brakes grab at all. HELP!!!!
Do I need a scan tool to do this on a vehicle this old? that will fix my issue? or do I have a bad brake booster?

Master cylinder. 2009 sonata with same exact symptoms. I bled the brakes today (old school way) and got plenty of fluid out at each corner, rotors still look brand new after a couple hours of trying to break the new rotors and pads in.
If the booster was bad you wouldn't be able to move the pedal even with the engine running. In other words, no power brakes.

I own a 2020 Jeep Wrangler and I am having problems with spongy brake peddle
When I purchased the jeep brand new it had excellent brakes
The peddle was firm and quick to respond
Now after about 3000k miles I have lost the peddle and they are spongy slow to respond
I believe after watching your video that is may have happened after the jeep went into anti spin mode once while off road This is not a problem with just my jeep If you go to the JL Wrangler forum you will see that others have the same problem and the dealer is no help. They say its normal. IT IS NOT NORMAL AND I NEED TO FIX IT
I purchased a FOXWELL NT630 to perform the ABS brake bleeding like I saw in in your video with the Autel put it would not perform the individual wheel brake bleed with the ABS pump running
What it did do I think was open inlet and outlet valves and run the ABS pump so I did bleed the brakes several times opening the valves and running the pump
This did improve the peddle by 50% put I can still tell there is air in the system
All this to say do you know if the Autel will run an individual wheel ABS brake bleed like seen in your video on a Jeep Wrangler JL 2018 to 2021
    Thanks for your help
    Larry

    • @2carpros

Excellent diagnosis it sounds like you are 100% correct. Off road use with ABS can absolutely get air in the ABS system and cause that problem.
It did on my 2005 F150 I can't imagine it wouldn't on your Jeep. I'd order it Amazon and see if it works, if not return it, if it does hang on to it.

@@2carpros Thank you and Thank you for your video
I have been an auto technician for over 40 years and never heard of ABS inducing air into a brake system and I did not think it was possible until I say your video
What you said about a master cylinder makes sense PUT the engineers need to figure out how to stop this from happening
Despite what the dealer said I new there was something wrong and was determined to find out what and fix it
I get the Autel MK808 on Friday and will bleed the brake again and I am sure this will fix it and then I will share your video with the Jeep JL Wrangler forum with an explanation on how I got to this point and how I fixed it
      Keep up the good work

    Try that on a 2021 Chevy 1500 3.0L
The truck had no lights on, front brake pads had 2mm remaing. As soon as the brake pads and RF pad sensor wire were replaced the Brake, ABS, Traction Control, and Engine lights all come on! The brake pedal must be pressed very hard for it to stop, like a powered booster is out. Oh... and to make matters worse it goes into "limp mode" meaning it will not go over 43mph.
To use automated bleed the SnapOn scan tool says to disconnect the Brake Fluid Reservoir Sensor Wire and there are six different steps! You can barely see the wire as the Master Cylinder is down so for in the engine compartment you need a funnel or risk spilling brake fluid.
So... 2mm on brake pads truck is fine. Replace pads the truck is nearly undeliverable and unstoppable.
Chevys were never meant to be maintained.
