That's something I've noticed before. There seems to be no general consensus about any concrete concept whatsoever. Some 'Libertarians' are okay with building codes (like this guy for example), while others don't even want to see the word government.
It really just seems to be a catch-all term for anyone further to the economic right of the typical Republican establishment.

I've heard a more cogent rebuttal to the building code argument and it's like this: "Well, in a free market a contractor whose buildings fall down will eventually stop getting customers and go out of business."
Here's why that's BS: Because the events that take a building down (fire, bombing, or natural disaster) are so rare that by the time it falls down the contractor already has 50 more projects done and is swimming in money. He's gonna let the next ceo worry about the firm.

Mumbai has tons of unregulated buildings. Some of them collapse WITHOUT earthquakes, let alone with one. Especially when it rains, the concrete basically absorbs the water, essentially the building becomes like a soggy mush and the building falls. Over 2,000 people in india died from building collapses in 2012 alone. Alexandria in Egypt is another city with terrible building codes. There’s some footage online somewhere of FOUR towers right side-by-side leaning in different directions. Support columns are not consistent and vary floor by floor in position, materials and size. The salty sea air actually erodes the foundations of the buildings and causes them to collapse. Sometimes 10-story towers collapse. They have videos of this stuff online. Sometimes you can even see raw footage of the events. There’s a video of these villas in India, being built and the visitors to the construction site were able to push the brick walls into falling. Not even the rich are safe in a country without building codes. They are an absolute must.

No it doesn't. On the contrary, it guarantees that these people continue to do business.
When people are allowed to build without a code - and charge less for it - there will always be people willing to take the risk and pay less. So people die in the name of the free market because they had to choose between basic necessities and living in a safe building.

Sam, you could make a cavalcade of all the liberetarian replies to your questions. Just use one clipp of you posing for example the diarrhea question, and then all the liberetarian answers to that in rapid succession. Perhaps with the added sound effect of canned laughter and cartoon comedy music? I think that would make an epic video.

@trajan74 All those building codes in NY didn't stop the towers from falling. Why would those fires or bombs or natural disasters spare a building from falling just because there are laws on paper?

    Just remember guys.
People from all over the colonies fought in the American Revolution.
If they'd have been so selfish to say "Why should I help stinky Massachusetts?" we'd be having tea and crumpets, and we'd all live the miserable life of a Brit.
I'm kidding. Brits are wonderful people.
The point is that the colonies came together in order to form a more perfect UNION.
Because they knew that together they could accomplish far more than they could separate.

What he doesn’t understand about earthquake design, is that it costs the building owner / developer / investor money. If it isn’t mandated, the owner will possibly remove any provisions from the design.
Yes, architects and engineers can probably design it, but if there are also no mandates, there are probably no requirements / building codes to push the development of seismic design standards forward. One engineer might think theory A works best, another theory B. Maybe some engineering’s seen a mix of both systems, but makes critical oversights in mixing them….

The only thing I agree with this caller on is this.
Freedom isn't being free of responsibility, rather freedom is merely the ability for someone to tackle their responsibilities, in whatever way they think is best.
If that's to pay a tax for their health care, they have that right.
HOWEVER, when this tax is placed on those who don't want it, that is a minority having their freedom taken away by the majority.
If 2 wolfs and a sheep vote for dinner, who is gonna lose....

OK - example - Asian first and second generation families in the US. I have lived in Hawaii, Alaska and Washington. My mother in law is a vietnamese transplant. All these areas have high populations of chinese, japanese and koreans. They utilize their very close knit families and are more successful economically and in school than other groups. Pre-welfare and Pre-large cities with anonymity this was more common amongst white and black american families. So if you open your eyes you can see.

Mandating certain properties for products (with a certain margin) usually creates a niche where other interests (or even publicly owned industry) can put effort in and receive profit from.
E.g. with fire alarms the state can demand how many need to be in a certain sized space, where to place them, volume emitted, etc. But these did not become universally required before they became cheap to make.
There's plenty of consumer choice and state agencies review them at a regular pace.

I also remember when I was 10 and thought that in order for some people to be prosperous other people have to suffer and be the losers in society

The Federal government is granted the ability to regulate interstate commerce by the Constitution. This means that they have a RESPONSIBILITY to do so, because otherwise there is no other mechanism in place to resolve conflicts in law between states.

IN a free market, Banks wouldn't finance the building of a house without inspections done by a third party who ensured universal safety codes, they also wouldn't finance it without insurance providers covering the builder, the insurance provider wouldn't cover the builder if he had a history of skirting safety standards. No one would hire an uninsured builder. It isn't hard to imagine this stuff without the government. Also, Some of the oldest structures on earth were built long before universal building codes were implemented, so there is also that. Sam is kind of a simpleton.

More and more I am sickened by the selfish attitude Libertarians display. They feel they don't have to live by a agreed social contract or see it as a necessity for the function of a good society...and no outs is not overwhelmingly good, it just has better potential to make it so...in comparison with someone not getting they are replacing this government they dislike by comporting their opinions on everybody else...
